Mirishrock
Hi, I'm a newbie (5 days in) to Whole30. I have researched the forum for answers to this question but haven't found what I'm looking for. I found Pacific Organic Unsweetened Vanilla Coconut Milk at New Seasons. I'm curious whether the following ingredients are non-compliant: 1. Natural Vanilla Flavor - a review of the forum showed a response by a moderator indicating this isn't a problem, but I want to confirm b/c then other users were giving answers which contradict. (My inclination is to go w/ the moderator but I'm all about confirming.) 2. Tricalcium Phosphate - a review of the forum showed an advanced user saying this isn't a problem but it seemed more based on saying it isn't one of the three bad categories. However, I don't know enough about derivates of those three main categories of "no good" to know the answer. (Sort of like I didn't have a clue there were that many different ways to say "sugar" until I started this program.) 3. Sodium Citrate - I think this is ok, but again....confirmation would be great. 4. Vitamin A Palmitate - I couldn't find a clear answer on this so please confirm whether this is good or bad. And again, my gut says "anything that is a vitamin is fine" but the lack of knowledge regarding derivates leaves me concerned. (And I'm fully aware you can't list every derivative of every bad ingredient.) 5. Zinc Oxide - I couldn't find anything on this one so any information is helpful. I *think* I'm fine - but I'll admit the "vanilla" has me concerned given that i know vanilla extract is a no-go due to the alcohol ban. However, I'm concerned the milk is just finding another way to provide the sugar so I'm just looking for confirmation. Thank you in advance!!!! missmary
All of those are ok. That said, there is lots of coconut milk out there that is free of additives. You will find it in a can instead of a carton. Look in the "international foods" isle.
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted January 10, 2016 Moderators Share Posted January 10, 2016 This is technically compliant but I would really suggest that instead of eating/drinking things with so many 'additives' that you find one that's a little more pure. They are out there, or you can make your own. Part of the Whole30 is realizing how many unnecessary additives and preservatives are added to our food, often without our really realizing (most people don't read labels in their daily lives). What are you doing with this product? Maybe we can help with alternate suggestions.?
Mirishrock
My husband is using it to drink - he wanted an option other than water and he really used to like a glass of milk. I'm using it to make coffee tolerable so i have *a* source of caffeine (I lost, though I understand why, my coffee w/ creamer and sugar or my diet soda). Mirishrock
Side note - I do understand separating the additives out, and don't dispute it so take the suggestion fully. However, I feel that sodium citrate is in many food options i'm seeing. Is it good or bad? (The others are new to the coconut milk.)
LucieB
Sodium citrate is used as a preservative and emulsifier and flavoring. I don't think it's harmful. But the point of Whole30 is to eat real foods, this sound like a chemical creation. I think that is the bigger issue. You're eating something that was created, not harvested. And if you need that to make coffee "tolerable" them why make yourself drink coffee? You'll answer, for the caffeine. That's a separate issue, but using a concoction like that milk to make something you don't like tolerable (not even enjoyable, just tolerable) sounds like an awful thing to do to yourself. There are other ways to wake up. Enjoyable ones even.

Check out this article.http://whole9life.com/2012/10/quench-your-thirst-whole9-style/ It's only 30 days.
praxisproject
I would also recommend having a crack at making your own almond milk, if you have a decent blender (some really aren't up to the challenge, no stick blender success here). How to make your own almond milk (just make it plain for W30) http://detoxinista.com/2010/11/dont-wait-another-minute/ If you have one of those tiny ninja bullet things, they are great because they can make a small amount quickly. If you don't want to wait for soaking, macadamia and hazelnut don't need soaking. Iced tea is another not-water option, or sparkling mineral water like La Croix. If he wants thicker, there's always cold soup
