Fruit with my breakfast

Hi All!  I'm on Day 15 of my first whole 30 and my biggest struggle is breakfast.  I don't like eggs (and wonder if I am sensitive to them because they often cause a stomach ache).  So my typical breakfast is a Adell Chicken sausage, raw veggies (pea pods, carrots) and a banana with cashew butter.  The other half the time I've had some sort of leftover protein from previous meals (chicken, meatballs, etc...)  I just made some homemade jerky (compliant) from beef sirloin so I might consider that for a protein as well.

 

Pre-W30 -- I loved a protein shake for breakfast so this is very difficult for me to eat savory things for breakfast, but I have done that so far.  I don't look forward to it but I'm trying to work through it.

 

My question:  Should I have the banana for breakfast.  It's the only thing that sounds good to me on my plate at breakfast time. But is the sugar from the banana not a great thing for giving up the sugar cravings?  Is that sugar not great for balancing my hormones?

A banana with a meal is absolutely okay, but bear in mind that a lot of people report that fruit with Meal 1 causes cravings later in the day.

If you can give up the banana or maybe move it to the later half of the day with Meal 2 or 3, that may be better.

As SugarcubeOD said above, It's fine to have the banana at breakfast if you want it, but some people do find that fruit at breakfast causes them to crave more sweets throughout the day or to be hungrier faster in the day. I'd suggest that this is something to play with -- do a few days without the banana and see how you feel, compared to how you feel with it. If you notice a difference, that will be your answer. 

 

Maybe instead of the banana, try some different vegetables and see if you can find something you really like. I think this Velvety Butternut Squash is great at breakfast, it can be made ahead, and it's actually good hot or cold. Soups can also be nice at breakfast, especially if at some point you'd like something warm. This Silky Ginger Zucchini Soup is good, or this Golden Cauliflower. I think if you find some vegetables that you find really appealing, you won't mind not having the banana every day.

Thanks all!  I might try a couple days without the banana at breakfast and see how I feel in the morning and just up my veggies a little bit.  So far the cravings have been minimal which has surprised me.  And I can easily go 4-5 hours between meals and not feel hungry.  So I think my portions and following the template are working for me.  

 

It would be nice to not feel like I need a sweet something at breakfast though.  :)  But will see how skipping the banana or moving it to lunch works.

I had to stop buying bananas at the beginning of January. I had gotten into a habit of having them every day and even eating them when I wasn't hungry to avoid them going overripe...and lets be honest, there's never a bad time for a banana, hungry or not.  :s

 

Since I dropped them I don't notice their absence.  I'm with Shannon, try going a week without bananas.  This will also help get you out of the "something sweet for breakfast" mindset.

Ultrarunnergirl... I haven't done cooked veggies yet at breakfast.  Always want something I can grab quickly.  I eat raw veggies at other meals and have no problems.  It's definitely the eggs.. I notice the tummy ache about 2 hours after I eat them.  I can have small amounts and seem to be ok, but definitely 2 eggs or more will give me issues.  :(

If you roast veggies in a bulk cook, try having some of them for breakfast (either cold or not). They're quick if you only have to reheat, or eat them cold (I don't like white potato cold, but all other root veggies I do).

 

Also, plantains are from the banana family, you can try cooking some green ones (not sweet) as a starchy veg. Pretty sure you can't eat them raw.
