Surgery on Day 25

Recommended Posts

I started my W30 on Jan 3, then got scheduled for surgery on Day 25. I know I've read Melissa saying that doctor's orders trump Whole30 rules but I'm wondering about the post-surgical flat ginger ale and saltines that usually keep my post-surgical nausea at bay. Do I decline them if I don't feel sick? Consume them and consider my Whole30 to be over? Give myself a pass that day and resume the next day?

I don't vary from Whole30 eating for anything nowadays, but as a newbie, that is probably not realistic for you. The reality is that ginger ale and saltines are habits, not superior anti-nausea approaches, but if that is what you feel like after surgery, they might be a good choice for you. I would eat scrambled eggs and drink ginger tea.

Eating saltines and drinking ginger ale will end your Whole30 and starting afresh the next day would be starting from day 0, not day 26. That is just how the body works.

You may also be somewhat surprised to find that the saltines may actually wreak havoc on your tender, Day 25 stomach.  Post surgery is not the time that I would choose to test out a glutinous food item after this many days of clean eating.

Along with Tom's suggestion of eggs, sweet potatoes are gentle on the stomach and can put something solid down there that can help things stay put.

Thanks,

If I had my way, I would totally go with the scrambled eggs and ginger tea! I'm thinking about what they will offer me in the recovery unit. In my previous experience (four other surgeries), it's flat ginger ale and saltines. And one of the metrics for being discharged is that I've eaten or drunk something. Maybe I can leave a teabag or two of ginger tea with my husband and he can ask the post-op nurse for some hot water.

Find out what they do for people with food allergies, celiacs, the gluten sensitive.  See if there is any reason why you cannot pack yourself a small something that is then given to you in recovery.  A roasted sweet potato can be eaten cold and isn't smelly or messy so there should be no reason you cannot advocate for yourself that you are only going to eat Real Food.
