Lentil Substitute

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am working on my meal planning for my first week of Whole30 (I plan on starting Tuesday the 18th) and I have a stew that I really like but it calls for lentils as part of the base. The rest of the recipe is compliant (mainly carrots, sweet potatoes, and peppers) and I was wondering if there was a good suggestion for a substitution from anyone.

Any other advise is appreciated! Thank you!

Just to say though, I personally find adapting favourite recipes to be whole 30 compliant to be a rather miserable experience. No matter how delicious the outcome it is never the same as how you've always enjoyed it. I have preferred to find new recipes to cook. That might just be me.

It's difficult to find subs for lentils/legumes.   Button mushrooms might come close but it would be mushroom stew or soup.

How about just concentrating on the compliant foods you can have for 30 days and then make your faves later on down the road.  I found that to be easier all of the way around.

I have a soup recipe on my blog I used to make all the time. It used red lentils as part of the base. Well, I made it without lentils, and used broth in place of the water and it turned out perfectly! You can always add veggies of whatever kind you like to replace the missing ingredient.

Might be a little much for OP's recipe since it already had sweet potatoes, but the other day making chili I experimented with using dehydrated diced potatoes -- http://www.amazon.com/Mother-Earth-Products-Potato-Quart/dp/B007C7OO4M/-- it it worked pretty well. Gave some nice "pebbly" texture to the chili, and they soaked up flavor as they rehydrated during the simmer, so they weren't too exclusively "potato-ey".
