No more migraines! + Slaying the sugar dragon

I'm Lucie and I started my first Whole30 today! I'm excited, and nervous, and not looking forward to the upcoming battle with my Sugar Dragon. However, that Sugar Dragon has its claws in me pretty deep, and I'm afraid that it's making my tendency to migraines and bad headaches worse. 30 days is a small, small price to pay if it means getting rid of those headaches!

I got out of the military two years ago and started working in construction, and the combination of losing my daily physical fitness regimen and the "life on the road" diet has meant that I've struggled a lot to eat healthfully, consistently. I know it's contributed to fatigue, and I can point straight to that box of macaroni and cheese as comfort food in times of stress--which, since I've been on the road for the past two years, have been a lot more prevalent than I'd like.

This Whole30 is taking place a) during the winter, when I love eating warm and comfy, carb-filled, food; B) while I'm on a stressful construction job in which a lot is at stake; and c) when I'm surrounded by people who are wonderful but who think that coffee and Zebra Cakes make up a complete breakfast. It's going to be a serious challenge! I'm looking forward to learning more about how other people have conquered this and made new habits for themselves. Let's do this!

Hi Lucie! Welcome to Whole30! I did my first whole30 about a year ago, in large part to see if I could get any relief from migraines, which I would suffer from about 5 days per month, sometimes double or triple that. Once I started my whole30, the migraines disappeared. Completely gone. As my eating habits slowly slipped away from whole30 style eating, guess what? Yup, migraines came back. I've narrowed it down to sugar consumption.

I can't speak to the other challenges you have facing you with the job schedule, etc, but I can say that whole30 has the potential to help with headaches. Good luck, I hope you find relief!

Welcome aboard.

Migraines are something I'm hoping to kick with the W30 as well. I started to get one D6, but it went away before it formed.  I'm also a sugar junkie, I could eat a whole pack of oreos in a day if I knew they were in my house.

I'm on D9 and feeling great, no cravings so far.  It's work, I get up earlier to eat breakfast before work so I'm not tempted by the goodies in the cafeteria.  I believe  you can do this, it's going to take some kitchen prep time and shuffling things around, but it's only for 30 days.  You've got this!

Thanks, both of you! It's really encouraging to know that you've seen some good results. Day 2 has dawned with that kind of heavy, quasi-hung over feeling, but I'm drinking water and listening to music at work, and your comments are giving me that extra motivation!

Day 3: made it to the gym before work! I'm definitely converted to coconut milk in my coffee...I don't think I'll feel any desire to go back, actually. That's a nice feeling. :) Have alternated between REALLY not hungry and mildly nauseous most of the day, but I took someone else's advice from elsewhere on the forum and started with a bit of my lunch, and pretty soon I'd eaten 3/4 of it and a banana. I'll call that one a win. I don't want to kill All The Things yet, so I'm kind of waiting for the other shoe to drop...

Day 8: I just want Corn Chex for breakfast.

But otherwise things have gone pretty well! I made it through a trip to a steakhouse with some questions from my friends--but they were all questions aimed at helping me find something I could eat, so that was great. Grocery shopping is tough because it requires walking right past some of my favorite foods, but it's definitely getting easier. I am having these weirdly vivid dreams about cheating--not on purpose, but I'll dream that I accidentally ate corn chips and a sandwich for lunch and realized two hours later that I'm NOT allowed to have those and freak out because I have to start over. At least I'm not doing it in real life!

  • 2 weeks later...

Hello ! I am on my first Whole30 and just finished day 5. One of my major hopes as well is to decrease the frequency and intensity of migraines. I get one a month so if I don't get one while on this whole30 I am going to shout from the rooftops how great this all is!!

I have tried the "what triggers migraines" in the past but never before have I done elimination to this measure. I started whole30 for many other reasons too, but if I can mitigate migraines that's huge !

Good luck and I will check in on progress as migraine support groups are good :)
