amandry
Hello there from Ankara, Turkey. I am a humanitarian starting the whole 30 in Ankara tomorrow. This is a real challenge since almost everything you buy in cans and bottles from the stores here have sugar and/or metabisulfit. Plus I am learning how to say all these technical things in Turkish. However, I am fired up to start as I have noticed in the past few years that breads and sugar make me feel very tired and rundown. If anyone else is in the neighborhood, please let me know! RachelRoberts2
Hi Amandry! I am currently living in Amman, Jordan. I am slightly whole30ing it on my own bike but haven't committed to going back to a full whole30. I agree with you things are quite hard to find here when you want them (saying good bye to whole foods and trader joes has really hit me hard!!) but the fresh produce is nice! ( I do miss kale and spinach and brussel sprouts and parsnips and yucca and all the great things that aren't found here () I have done maybe 4 whole30's before, all in the states so this shall be interesting! Let me know if you need anything. I would be down for a whole30 support! Rachel
amandry
Hi Rachel, Oh do enjoy Amman! My boss is actually there right now so it seems like Amman is the center of the world right now. My biggest issue is things like vinegar and mustard, most of the versions here have metabisulfit in them which just drives me crazy!!! I did a test run of the eating plan yesterday just to see if I could do it, and it wasn't too bad. I just had my milky sugary coffee in the evening, otherwise I was able to stick to it. So now I know what my biggest challenge is ; however, I also noticed that I want to eat more quantities of things. So last night I made a cauliflower mash and a baked tomato lemon mushroom topping, and I ate two large helpings. Is there anyway to really curb the hunger in your experience? I am not so much craving the missing items, as wanting to eat larger quantities. thanks for your support! A

Whole30 is about listening to your body, reading it's signals, and nourishing it in the way that it asks. You may find in the early days (particularly if you come from a back ground of calorie restriction) that your body will be looking for LOTS of nourishment because it fears that another 'famine' might be on the way - it may also hold onto any body fat so that it has some stores to burn when that famine comes around. This should settle down in a week or so, but for now eat as much as you need to stay satiated for 4-5 hours - build your meals to meet the recommended meal template of 1-2 palm sized pieces of protein (that's the length, width & depth of your palm - I don;t see mention of ANY protein in your meal above), 1-3 cups of veg (with 3 being optimal), and a generous serving of a healthy fat - and really, in spite of what you might think you really can't go overboard on the fat. Fat is your friend here Any other questions, just ask!
RachelRoberts2
A- Amman is a lovely city but I am sure Turkey is just as nice! As far as being hungry I can only suggest exactly what JMCBN has said. If you are hungry then eat! There is nothing wrong with supplying your body with the nutrients that it needs. As long as you are following the template (loads of veggies has always helped me). Fill yourself up on good protein and load good fats on your plate as well. Your body won't be able to heal itself if it isn't getting all the nutrients. So ditch ideas on weight loss etc and just focus on one meal at a time. The results will come, I promise you! Our two dinner meals look slightly different- I have made burgers tonight with lettuce wraps (the burgers have leek, onion, spices etc) and then sweet potatoes roasted in the oven and eggplant, zucchini, onion, and peppers cooked together. Lots of olive oil! And some nuts to finish off the fats. Try to look at the template for meals for the first couple days. And to be honest, it takes a couple of days to get the right proportions! Once it clicks, it will change the way you are looking at foods! Keep me updated!
azcoolmom
Europe has much stricter labeling standards. Sulfites in vinegar are naturally occurring, and I read they are allowed. It would be the vinegar in the mustard causing it to be reflected on the label, which again, are naturally occurring. But naturally occurring or not, Europe labels anything that might be problematic. RachelRoberts2
Hey A- How are you doing? Are you getting this bad weather as well? Have you found any awesome ingredients that you can't wait to eat? I made homemade mutabal yesterday which came out amazing! Let us know how you are getting along! amandry
Sorry for the long term silence. Fairly early into the experience I found that I got into the habit of naturally just cooking and not needing to plan or log things. It was weird. I personally think that it was a good sign that I could internalize the rules so quickly and that it became part of my daily life -- however I would say, now that I am on Day 31, that it was easier to internalize the process of checking the ingredients, and being creative with the recipes, then it was to stick to the meal template. I did get to the point that I ate when I was hungry but I also noticed that in the last 10 days , my appetite decreased, but I never felt like I was denying myself. Also I got to the point that temptation really faded for me. For example, we went out to a resto the other day where they served Spanish food like Paella, and I had no problem not ordering it (unfortunately there was nothing on the menu that I could order) - luckily I had figured that that would be the case, so I had a turkey breadless sandwich before I left the house. I have noticed the following changes to my body: 1) the bumpy stuff on my arm has gotten smoother (long term condition so thats a good sign!) 2) I am still often tired but my own fault for not sticking to the meal template. 3) I haven't stuck to my goals of working out (mainly because no time, no energy and the one time I tried my foot asked me what I was thinking). 4) I've lost about 12 lbs which is a nice surprise. More importantly than that I feel comfortable in my clothes as they are no longer binding. 5) I have had minor pimples break out (over the 4 weeks, two pimples). I usually never get any, but two is not a big problem. 6) I have intellectually missed wine, but never been tempted to drink. I am going to try the re-introduction exercises now to see what are the real culprits ; but after that I think I may go back to the Whole 30 again because I want to do better with the meal plan. How did you do?
amandry
So Day 1 of reintroduction was wine. I had 3 glasses and then only slept 4 hours that night, which was not enough. So clearly wine is okay but in limited quantities only. Then Saturday and Sunday I had some yummy food including Spicy Tomato Salmon with carrots and green peppers. Today I am re-introducing dairy (a splash of lactose-free milk in my coffee, and 2 small slices of beyaz peynir (white Turkish cheese) with lunch. I can say that my stomach is already bit upset -- so I think dairy is definitely an issue (not a big one but still). So I will keep that limited.
