SamL
I've read conflicting info in another group so hopefully you guys can help me out. Justin's classic almond butter says Palm FRUIT oil..is that compliant? I've read)on another group) that palm oil is okay, but not palm fruit oil...that doesn't make sense to me...I think they're the same thing and FRUIT is allowed on whole 30 so...okay or no? Moderators ShannonM816 Posted January 19, 2016 Moderators Share Posted January 19, 2016 Palm fruit oil is OK. It's palm kernel oil you need to avoid. That said, it is possible to find almond butter that's nothing but almonds, if you wanted to avoid it.
SamL
If it's okay,I see no reason to avoid it. It's not something we eat daily anyway...What is palm KERNEL oil? is this in the book somewhere?I looked for it,but wasn't able to find anything on palm oil.. Moderators ShannonM816 Posted January 19, 2016 Moderators Share Posted January 19, 2016 If you google whole30 and whatever ingredients you're wondering about, you'll find past discussions of almost anything you could wonder about. Basically, from what I've read, palm kernel oil has more saturated fat. I'm not sure if that's the only reason for avoiding it or not. As for why people would choose to find options without any palm oil, there are environmental concerns about the harvesting and production of palm oil. I haven't done a lot of research on this, it's not an ingredient I come across much in the things I usually buy so I haven't really looked into it. SamL
So palm oil and palm FRUIT oil are the same things?Because it seems Justin's uses both on their labels...but palm KERNEL oil is not okay? I'm not finding anything in the whole 30 book about palm oil. On the downloadable shopping list,I see palm oil under cooking fats..I wonder why it's not in the book?? missmary
So palm oil and palm FRUIT oil are the same things? yes. palm oil and palm fruit oil are the same, and both are fine as far as the whole30 is concerned. I have not seen anywhere that palm kernel oil is explicitly prohibited on the whole30, but it is a seed oil, so I would limit it. "Look for palm oil, not palm kernel oil, and try to get the “unrefined” kind if you can." Moderators ShannonM816 Posted January 22, 2016 Moderators Share Posted January 22, 2016 I have to admit, I never found anything on the Whole30 site with a reason for avoiding the palm kernel oil -- I based my answer off threads like this one where another moderator had said it wasn't okay. praxisproject
Whole30 info: Palm kernel oil is missing all the nutrition from red palm oil (unrefined) and is a white colour. Other concerns: Palm oil is a $US40 billion dollar industry worldwide, so there are some business practices that may make you not want to purchase products containing palm oil. Personally I find it something I'm not ethically comfortable with, regulation on production doesn't seem to be tough enough to make a difference and food labelling is pretty dodgy around the world when it comes to palm oil (in some countries it's entirely hidden under "vegetable oil" to avoid the eye of angry consumers). http://www.orangutan.org.au/palm-oil these guys are critically endangered, so palm oil and anything containing palm oil is off my shopping list until that changes. Industries change fastest with financial incentive If you ever get a chance to see one of these wonders in a zoo, please do. They use tools, are the only non-human species capable of "calculated reciprocity" and interact with those who come to visit them very much like humans do. We no longer trade in ivory to protect elephants which are endangered, but palm oil is a real threat to a critically endangered species which will likely become extinct in within our lifetimes. We're quite close to Indonesia here in Australia so palm oil is a hot topic here.
SamL
I don't normally eat palm oil,but the jar says it's sustainably sourced so I'll eat it for now. And red palm oil is the same too?

I see no reason to include in my diet something that is so harmful to the environment that is so unnecessary. There are loads of oils that are sustainable and less impactful than Palm oil... I feel it's become the new trend (starting to see it in stores like crazy etc..) and I'm not jumping on that band wagon... nope!
AKP
Question for everyone....how are you able to tell what type of Palm Oil is in this Justins Almond Butter? It literally just says: Dry Roasted Almonds, Palm Oil Does that mean you can or cannot have this?
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted September 10, 2018 Moderators Share Posted September 10, 2018 You could contact the company and ask them but as per the above, no type of palm oil is specifically excluded from the program so it's up to you to make a decision based on your own ethics and environmental concerns. Ditto that! My local supermarket has a grind-your-own dispenser and fresh ground almond butter is among the choices... it is only almonds being smashed as dispensed. If you like almond butter and have not tried this method then do yourself a favor and try it! It is fantastic!
