Constipation - Bad Digestion from Endometriosis

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I know this topic has been talked about often and I have read other people's advice, I just have a few questions. I'm on day 25 and just started having constipation in the past week. Prior to this last week I was having no issues in this area and I haven't changed anything i'm eating. I have been drinking kombucha (compliant) and Smooth Move tea but these seem like short fixes.

I am going to purchase a magnesium supplement but have some questions:

  • How much should I take to help the constipation along? Should I take a much larger dose than normal? If so for how long should I take the larger dose?
  • I have endometriosis which causes poor digestion already (lucky me), should I be taking anything else to help with digestion because of the endo?

Most people are deficient in magnesium so that is a good start, for sure! You would start slowly and increase your dosage, eventually titrating your personal dose to your bowel movements.  What that means is that because magnesium draws water into the bowel system, you want to start slow or you'll get diarrhea.  Slowly increase until you get to the point where you are having comfortable, easy poops.

You should also consider how much water you are drinking on the whole.  We recommend 1/2 ounce per pound of bodyweight (eg, 160# person should drink 80oz water/day, more if nursing or exercising).

Raw veggies and nuts can cause digestive distress as can large quantities of something your body isn't used to (avocados, coconut products etc).  Did you start eating something lately that you hadn't been before?

Ok i'll try that with the magnesium supplement. I'm glad I asked, I probably would have over done it on the dosage seeking relief!

I drink a ton of water, I drink around 150oz a day right now (I have a big 50oz bottle that I refill three times a day).

This past weekend wasn't great for me in terms of eating like I normally do on the plan, I was out of town on Saturday so I ate more nuts than normal and probably didn't drink enough water. The only raw veggies I eat on a regular basis is a bed of spinach and kale under lunch and dinner. I eat one avocado a day but I've been doing that since the start of the plan. These past couple days I've tried knocking it down to just half an avocado to see if that would help but I've noticed that i'm not feeling as satisfied after eating now because that was one of my main fats. I've also cut nuts out completely besides a little bit of complaint almond milk in my coffee.

I know that the endo doesn't help my situation but it's never been this bad before, I've usually been able to go on my own eventually. I've been wondering if the added animal protein is causing me problems? I ate meat before but it was only with dinner whereas now i'm eating it with every meal.

But you are on Day 25 and you have only been constipated in the last week so the "animal protein" answer probably doesn't fly if you were ok for the first 20-ish days.

I'm guessing it's the travel, eating out, nuts and probable lack of normal water consumption that happens when our routine is thrown off and you have a background of having constipation issues so it probably takes less for you to re-visit that particular issue.
