sdlustberg
Hi all! Went to a sushi restaurant and had a roll w/ no rice (tuna, snow crab, avocado). Assuming it's made with real crab, is snow crab compliant? A friend mentioned that it might be imitation crab, which probably wouldn't be compliant, but the restaurant specifies crabstick in other rolls so I assume this was real? Moderators Tom Denham Posted March 4, 2016 Moderators Share Posted March 4, 2016 All animal/seafood protein is compliant. Fake crab is usually fish, so even fake crab would be compliant. See below: I stand corrected. I remember when I worked in a grocery store in about 1975 and read the label of some frozen fish that said it was the same fish often sold as budget priced crab. Apparently the fake stuff has changed since I was a boy.

Fake crab or imitation crab is definitely not compliant... they mix minced white fish with artificial flavors, sugar and flour and other disgusting things and then dye it on top to make it 'look like' crab... Yeah, as someone who has lived gluten-free for almost 10 years, I avoid imitation crab, as it can contain gluten.

KalinaM
The sushi restaurant by me spells the fake stuff "krab" so you know in the menu... I've been told that "krab" is a type of Pollack that just looks and tastes like crab. If the menu said specifically "snow crab" I would assume that you ate snow crab, not krab. Just my two cents, but I think you're OK.

One way to tell is how much you paid for it ...I'd imagine real snow crab would set you back a bit. Also it's a bit dubious if you can't tell between the real thing and imitation crab...the restaurant may use a tiny bit of the real thing and add non-W30 fillers (thinking worst case scenario!)..
