abi2001
I'm excited and nervous to get started! I have a hard copy of "It Starts With Food" and the eBook of "Whole30." I'm starting this program because: I have 15-17 pounds that I need to lose that won't budge, no matter what else I've tried and how active I may be; I've suffered from anxiety disorder and out-of-the-blue anxiety/panic attacks since 2001 that have prevented me from driving for almost 2 years and nothing has given me relief; I have two young boys (5 and 7) that I homeschool and my energy levels are so low (and I'm sick of being afraid of driving due to my attacks that I can't take my sons anyplace); I suffer from immense heart palpatations and despite tests/scans/exams galore no doctor can find the cause of them and they all want to put me on a statin. I'm only 36! I do have one question: should I read both books to do the program correctly, or is there one I should be more concerned about reading first before starting (is one more important for success than the other)? I'm reading/jumping between both books right now, but I'd like to at least have one completed by Sunday. I've already done the shopping and prepping portion. Thank you in advance! Can't wait to do this and very blessed to have my hubby as my cheerleader!
luluqld
Hey Abu 2001, sorry to read about your health problems, hopefully you can get them sorted ( or at least begin to) over the next 30 days. You are very lucky to have your husbands support. I wish you well. I started yesterday as a last mine the thing but I'm committed now and am looking forward to seeing the results. I have a love hate relationship with food, I love to eat and think about food obsessively but hate what overeating does to my body and I'll like to gain control. I'd love to have others to chat to whilst on this journey, maybe we could start by supporting each other and hope others might join us?. I can't answer your questions about the books I'm sorry. I only have the recipe book.
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted March 26, 2016 Moderators Share Posted March 26, 2016 Hi, abi2001, sorry no one really got back to you on this before now. You don't have to have finished either book to complete a Whole30. Which one you want to concentrate on really depends on you. It Starts With Food is really the science and explanation about why the program is what it is. The Whole30 is more a how to do a Whole30, with recipes and kitchen tips, a general timeline of what to expect, and tips on dealing with issues that might come up. I would say that many people who have anxiety and depression issues find that they need more than the recommended one serving of starchy vegetable per day, so don't be afraid to have sweet potatoes, winter squashes, potatoes, and root vegetables. Have other vegetables too, of course, but some people think of Whole30 as low carb and cut way back on the starchy vegetables, and you probably don't want to do that. iteach
Hi Abi, I have the It Starts With Food, and I think it's good enough to get started. I got overwhelmed with so much information out there about Whole30, so it was nice to have the book to break down the science and what to do. This website has also been extremely helpful as well. My anxiety lessens and frustration issues also lesson when I'm compliant. I make a point to eat root vegetables in moderation too. Best wishes! Suttlethoughts
Hi!! I'm starting tomorrow too! I am a serious emotional eater and tend to eat the wrong things to manage my anxiety at times. I desperately need support during this journey! Will you be getting the daily emails? I'm a bit nervous but excited at the same time. I just had cervical spine surgery and can't do anything physical (prior to my surgery I worked out 5 days a week, and have been limited for 2 months already. My recovery time is at least 6 weeks) so I thought this would be the perfect time to change my eating habits! Good luck!
luluqld
Hi Shuttlrthougths, welcome, I'm definitely up for proving and getting some support. How do you get the daily emails, I don't know my way around here very well. I'm just finishing day 2, it's 7.30pm here and I won't eat anything else today and will go to bed in an hour or so. So far I've been fine, the hardest thing is remembering not to taste my husband food as I cooking it. I decided to start my challenge without prior planning so I'm writing a list of the things I need but I'll make it till Tuesday when the shops open again after Easter by eating what's at home. Good luck
luluqld
Day 4 today, I have to go back to work after the holidays and this is going to be where it gets hard because my job is boring is I eat. I'll make breakfast to take to work, boil some eggs, I have leftover meatballs for lunch and I'll go to the shops to get some things. Have a great day all
abi2001
Thank you all for the responses! We were away this weekend visiting family for Easter and I didn't stay on top of my posts/replies... luluqld, I sent you a friend request! Thank you for the tips, ShannonM816! I didn't have much along the line of starch yesterday...and I felt it terribly. Today I did much better! iteach, I know what you mean. I did paleo for about 6 months last year and felt amazing, but then I got back into my usual day-to-day pre-paleo and things spiraled. I haven't been able to pin-point the culprit yet. I'm looking forward to the reintroduction after W30 so I can find out what ails me! This website it great though. Shuttlethoughts, I didn't sign up for the daily emails, only because we're single-income and things are tight. I also tend to stay pretty motivated and my hubby is very supportive, so I'm not sure if the emails would be necessary for me. However, considering you're post-op, it would probably be extremely beneficial for you. I used to work in surgery and I know my patients always felt better overall (emotionally, physically, etc.) with a followup call and out-of-the-blue communication. Motivation and support works on so many levels and comes in many shapes. Stay well and heal quickly! Day 2 has gone better than Day 1!

How do you get the daily emails, I don't know my way around here very well. You can sign up for the daily emails here -- they are meant to go along with your Whole30 day by day, so if you sign up now, it'll be off by a couple of days.
