Regarding Periods - now I'm worried!

So after reading several of the posts on the ladies feed I find myself getting more and more concerned and worried.  I've been trying to get pregnant for 3 years and if this is just going to mess with my cycle (more than it already is) maybe I should forget it?  I started my whole30 right after I finished my last period, and so I should be near the end of this by the time the next one rolls around.  I'm super irregular and hardly ever ovulate and I was actually really hoping this would kick my body into gear...  I definitely didn't ovulate this month but was still holding on to the idea that maybe next month will be better after I've been on this for over 30 days?

My plan is to work things back into my diet very slowly, and I don't ever plan on working dairy back in (it's an obvious problem for me).  My periods are basically debilitating at least 2 or 3 of the 4-6+ days it usually lasts.  I was hoping this would also help me with that.

Does anyone have any good news on this?  I realize it's not a miracle cure instantly but honestly this is my main goal... ovulate and stop fearing my period each month.

Thoughts?

I can tell you this. My period has only ever been regular twice in my entire life. When I was on the pill and when I started eating a primarily Whole30/paleo diet. Yes it might mess things up for a little while but part of this process is rebalancing your hormones which should have a positive effect on your cycle.

Okay - I come from a place where my hormones were completely and utterly out of whack.  My periods were always on time like clockwork naturally BUT I would feel terrible 10 days to 2 weeks out of every month.  Between a PMS extreme moodiness days before + 3 to 5 day menstrual migraine + severe cramping, bloating, breasts swollen and in pain I was simply a wonderful person to be around.....

My first period after my whole 30 - Nothing.  Nada.  Big fat goose egg.  No symptoms AT ALL.  Do do you know how completely mind blowing this was? My period literally sneaked up behind me and surprised me!

Now I am not saying that this will be you.  But what I am saying is this:  Give it a chance.  This way of eating will only will help you and your hormones.  You can expect some sort of shift and some unexpected things along the way.  But rather than thinking in it a negative way - think of it as this:  my body is healing itself.

Ok, well I feel like I'm doing really well on the eating.  I actually didn't eat that bad before (I can say that since I honestly didn't have to change much for the last 2 weeks)  So I'm hoping it helps!  I'm on day 14 today, still waiting for some tigers blood to hit me :)

Cheers!

  • 4 weeks later...

I just started my Whole30 and I am on day 6 today. I have had amenorrhea on/off since 2009 with lack of period for up to 11 months at a time. This last round I have not had a period for 5 months and yesterday I got my period. I am not on any medication or supplements and I have not changed anything else. I'm not sure whether this could be a coincidence or if it is directly related to the food changes I have made. I have to say that in addition to the changes in food choices and eliminations I have also significantly increased my caloric intake on this plan... It was a normal routine for me prior to this to skip meals and mainly breakfast - not typically eating until lunch. It is possible that I am simply allowing my body and brain to finally feel rested and digested instead of in survival mode! Either way, a very pleasant accomplishment on W30!

I don't have any good news to share, just wanted to say that I had the same concerns as you when starting w30. We actually quit in the middle twice because I was spotting and we were afraid it was messing my hormones up too much for me to be able to get pregnant. Turns out that, while I'm sure w30 does affect my hormones, it was something totally unrelated (polyps) that caused the spotting. While I was thrilled to find out what was going on, one thing I was most excited about was that it wasn't w30 that had caused the spotting and I could do it again without being afraid it would mess up my cycle! We are on day 18 of what will be our second completed w30 and will be cleared to try again next month. I've read a ton of testimonies about w30 regulating cycles and helping women ovulate, so here's hoping for both of us!
