Help! Can't stop the sugar!

Recommended Posts

I'm having trouble with sugar! I'm on day 7 and I have found myself turning to dates and nut butters when a sugar craving hits. I know this is a big no no, but I can't seem to break the habit or divert my attention! I feel like instead of having ice cream I'm just now turning to dates, nut butters, etc... Suggestions?? My sugar dragon is my main problem and I need to kick it FOR good! Help!!

hi Ly - I am about to start my 3rd week sugar free and still have my head telling me that it wants sugar. I am not a dietician nor a doctor but am in recovery and KNOW for me that this is just my mind obsessing over the desire to have sugar, there can't be a physical compulsion if you are free from sugar for 7 days. that is unless you are eating a ton of food that has sugar in it. best of luck,

olives, great idea! I read the posts before and they all say eat fat when you're hungry/craving sugar, but I never thought of olives. any other healthy fat ideas would be appreciated!!

Avocado sprinkled with salt (i have an amazing smoked salt) and eaten with a spoon straight out of the peel!

Seconding the avocado (it's saved me when I've come home from work!) as well as some cashews with sea salt. I've found if I have the avocado at breakfast and bring cashews to work, it helps pace me throughout the day.

Cashews are actually a very carb dense nut and could well prop up your sugar cravings without you realising it. Nuts are also recommended to be eaten in moderation only due to their poor omega 3 to omega 6 ratio, their impact on the digestive system, and the fact that they can become a food without brakes for some people.

I'd stick with the avocado  ;)

Just find a protein/fat combo that you LOVE, there are some good ideas above. My personal favorite for those days when lunch and dinner are too many hours apart is some pulled pork (I always have some in the fridge) with a slathering of homemade mayo. So so satisfying!

I did exactly the same thing on my last week of my first round......I shoveled dried fruits and nuts in my mouth every night for a few days.  Finally got myself under control and had a hard boiled egg instead.  I just tried to keep and egg on me at all times for when I craving hit.  It worked well for me.

Gurrllllll I relate so hard!! I've been eating nut butters straight up with a spoon, partly because it feels naughty and rebellious and sorta desperate (why I would want to feel that way, I don't know.) <_<

I like what someone said about starving the sugar dragon. It reminds me of quitting smoking, where I had to choke off and starve all the nicotine receptors.

If I feel I'm in a sugar-spiral, I have canned tuna and some fat to go with it, either olive oil or mayo, it always bring the brakes for me, breaks the blood sugar spike/crash cycle as there's no spike available.

Nut butters can have more sugar than you might expect (natural), I'd go for coconut butter over a nut butter, but butters in general can be a food with no brakes.

It's exactly like quitting smoking, nicotine (sugar) is one part, the habit is the other (feeding a craving by giving it what it wants, pacification). Once you break the hold it has on you, it's much harder for it to get a grip again.
