Starting whole 30 on April 6th - Looking for buddies

Hi Siri, I'm Nic and I am starting tomorrow as well. Is this your first whole 30? I completely one a year ago but went back to my old habits. Now my doctor thinks I now have a autoimmunine disease so it is not only about losing weight but of quality of life. I have no choice but to complete the whole 30 and beyond. Good luck and the first one was such a great experience I just have to get all the benefits back.

Hi, I am starting my first Whole30 today! I am very excited, as I have several health issues I am hoping to get control of and to start feeling better.  I have always been a picky eater though, mainly because as a child my household always ate basic, "plain" food.  I feel my biggest challenge is my small current choices of vegetables that I am used to.  I will need to really broaden my choices and try new things.  I am nervous and excited about this because I'm afraid I may not like many things and won't have many choices in what to eat.

Hi Siri - I'm starting my Whole30 today as well. It's my second one; for myriad reasons life got complicated after my first one about 2 years ago (despite the remarkable change in the way I felt) so I'm rebooting. Lots of challenges in the next month - travel, social things, etc. - but when is life not challenging? Time to figure out how to incorporate this into a busy life. My mantra for today is 'you CAN go to a party and not have a glass of wine!' LOL

Happy to see others starting today!  Starting my first Whole30 today.  My husband was going to start today with me, but he unexpectedly needed to travel this weekend and thought traveling on Days 2/3/4 may be a bit of a reach.  He'll start next week.  Glad to see others on this schedule, though, as I am sure support will be key!

Hi everyone! I am starting today too. Really hoping to take charge of some health issues and get started losing weight. Definitely most nervous about a couple social events I have this month - how do I handle a party at a restaurant where you don't order for yourself? Sit there and don't eat? Feeling awkward about that. Looking forward to getting through this with you guys. :)

Thank you all for replying.  Let us all help each other to get through this and get motivated.  Please share your daily meals.  I am going on Vacation on May 8th and hoping to improve my eating habits and loose some weight.  I am hoping to do my meal plan better by tomorrow.  Spent  3 hrs buying some groceries.

I will keep you all update about my detail plan in the evening. Please let me know if anybody need recipes sauces that will make your food delicious

Ugh, I think I messed up already. I have a cold and I forgot not to have cough drops! I know you can have medicine if you have to but these have so much junk in them. :( I don't know if I should start over.

Otherwise, here is what I have eaten so far today:

Breakfast: 2 hardboiled eggs, almonds (I meant to eat other stuff too but had a hard time since I'm sick)

Lunch: Chicken fajitas (chicken breast, red and yellow bell peppers and onions, with onion powder, garlic powder, chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper. I cooked the chicken in coconut oil but I'm not sure I like the taste so I did the veggies in olive oil.) on a bed of baby spinach. Kalamata olives.

Well, day 2 and I hope everyone is doing well.  Yesterday I ate eggs, bacon and a banana for breakfast, lunch was a burger, without the bun, sliced cucumbers and a green smoothie (I know not reccommended, but I'm having trouble with drinks) and dinner was a salad with a homemade raspberry vinegarette (a recipe I found on Whole30 website) a steak and potatoes I made in the oven, just tossed with olive oil and sea salt.  I made it through without snacking and found when I wanted to snack, I wasn't really that hungry.  I've been dealing with a headache, but not too bad so far today.  Last night was miserable.

Hey there! I started Monday but had a few set backs because i wasn't as prepared as i should have been, then because bf tried to cook an omelette for me that had noncompliant lunch meat in it (he didn't know that was off the list). I was halfway through eating it before i realized why it tasted so yummy.

So the 6th became my new start date. I've spent a few days creating a shelf in the fridge for myself. Moved noncompliant spices and cooking wines out of the way. I had a compliant first day, and compliant meals today. Currently mentally craving sugar, and had a dream last night about a huge seafood buffet. I think I'll buy some seasfood this weekend :P

Is there really not an option to order for yourself?  Even if a meal is provided would it be impossible to order your own side dish?  I found that when I told people is simple details that I was having some issues and doing an elimination diet to help to heal them they were very understanding.  Even if you are eating differently than anyone else, you'd at least still be eating.  Just keep your explanation simple.  Especially as it is too new for you.  Oh, and pitch it as exciting.  You are finding healing!  That is exciting!  Lots more supportive that way!

um.. are you aware you will still be on plan on May 8th?  This is called a whole 30, but honestly you need to commit a minimum of 40 days.  During the last 10 you will do reintroduction of food groups, one at a time.  If you skip this process you forfeit the chance to learn about your body.  The 30 days are only the "clean out" portion of your program.  This doesn't mean that you cannot go on vacation.  I just want you to be mentally prepared that you are still going to be restricted.  As you learn what new good foods you like over the next several weeks you should find it more and more do-able for life!

I would call the restaurant ahead of time to discuss "nutritional needs." I have celiac's and I have done that with family and work events.  I call ahead to let them know my needs and they will either offer you the same meal cooked according to your needs or offer a different option.  I went somewhere that had bread pudding for everyone and I expected something not so yummy, as before, but they made me gluten free bread pudding. And the chef brought it out to me! Good luck!

JB, potatoes are not included in whole 30 diet

Potatoes actually are allowed in the Whole30, they were added back in about two years ago. Take a look at the rules and recommendations linked in my signature below to familiarize yourself with what is and is not allowed.

Hi Marisha - You really want to stay away from smoothies... they mess up your hunger receptors and hormones and do nothing for you. As well, if you are eating a smoothie as a drink you're doing yourself a disservice. The recommendation is 1/2oz of water per pound of body weight and smoothies are not a replacement for that. There are lots of threads on here about sprucing up your water to make it easier to drink... you can find them by googling 'whole30 flavored water' or similar. Really, the only way to get comfortable drinking water is to start drinking water.

Sorry to hear you're not feeling well!

Medication that has been prescribed by a doctor is a-ok for the Whole30. Over the counter cough medicines and the like are not compliant unfortunately. Some people use ginger tea or throat coat tea... think back to your grandparent's time before Robitussin was everywhere...

Well I stumbled out of the gate because I had to give up my Whole30 prep day last weekend to take my daughter on an unexpected trip, but finally had time to do some real prep last night and it has certainly made a difference.  I knew I liked chimichurri, but boy do I love Whole30's recipe.  I put it on some shrimp last night, then found myself dipping raw peppers in it this morning for breakfast.  So good.  Any one else have something they tried that is really hitting the spot right now?

Hello. I am just finishing up day two. I messed up on Wed but yesterday and today have been compliant so far for me. My husband just at a chip with the guac. Whatever. We normally eat fairly clean and organically but I am a total sugar lover so this will be the hard part. In a panic I ate two strawberries after lunch. For dinner last night I made the Whole30 Asian cucumber cups. YUM. I  has those for leftovers at lunch and tonight I made a kale salad with mango, avacado, hazelnuts and a compliant dressing. I am heading to the bridal shower of a friend and I know there will be nothing there I can eat...even the GF bread she bought at the bakery I work at. That is a whole other days conversation...I work at a totally gluten free dedicated bakery and had to make donuts this morning.g. Pain.

Well, I seem to have stayed compliant through my very bad cold, other than my first day cough drop mishap. Because of that I am calling this day 4 instead of day 5. I can't say that my meals have been regularly spaced and to the perfect template, but I did make it through. I survived on a lot of hard boiled eggs when I was too sick to cook.

Trying to meal plan for the week now and I'm going to make mayo for the first time. I'm going to try the crock pot carnitas that's in the Whole 30 book, even though I have to admit I don't love the way meat comes out in the crock pot.

The thing that's really hitting the spot for me right now is spaghetti squash with ground beef and compliant marinara sauce (Aldi, of all places! Organic and compliant!). Although I actually feel like maybe it's too much like pasta for me, which is a huge binge trigger food. Last night I made myself a second helping even though I was full :-/

We try not too eat out too much for financial reasons but we were out at the mall with the kids last night and luckily there was a Chipotle. I researched carefully what to eat (carnitas, lettuce, hot and mild salsa, and guacamole) and I was excited, but it wasn't actually that great. Something about the carnitas and all that guac made the texture a little like tuna salad, lol. Maybe my taste buds are still off from being sick.

Jana how did the bridal shower go? How's work going??? That job has got to be tough right about now!

jb1212 - Glad to hear you're feeling better!  Have to believe that if you stuck to the plan while sick, then you have the commitment to make it through the entire 30 days.  Spaghetti squash is on my list of things I want to try on Whole30.  I've never had it, heard great things and just need to put it into my weekly plan some week.
