Ah thanks Natalie, very kind of you.

Feeling less glum today. Spent the morning in the cold & rain for ds's cross-counrty race. He did great.coming in 5th on a hard 800m course, a joy to watch. He starts off at the back and just picks off the people in front of him one by one, it's brilliant to watch :D

Food is a bit meah, I need to get back into my groove and do some shopping!

So far today

boiled egg, banana and black coffee

2 fried egg, 3 slices bacon, cc coffee

See what I mean? meal template it is not :o

Dinner will be better - roast gammon, brocolli & cabbage.

So the draw was today and despite all my positive visualisation we didn't win. I am (stupidly) dissapointed and fed-up and tearful over it. A trip to the States (or anywhere apart from my parents place in Spain, and even then my parents help with flights) will never happen for us barring winning it or a truckload of money. wah wah wah. Hate being always strapped for cash :(

I just want to open a bottle of wine and drown my povvo sorrows.

But I won't....

I would personally love it if my family lived in Spain ... sigh. I LOVE Spain! But yes, I hear you on the cash-strapping, which is why we go camping A LOT. :P

I'm super jealous of the eggs ... found out about 2 years ago that I'm allergic to them and that was the end of that. I can eat the yokes, but no whites, so when I see your food porn with an egg on top, I can almost taste it!

Howdy y'all :)

7.15am - this weeks egg loaf , black coffee

9.15am - GYM

My first day of adding in another progressive wave, the 1 split squat with 2 x15kg db's was plenty challenging, as was that last 15kg row.

3 waves, reps 5/3/1

DB Bulgarian Split Squats 6/7.5/10 ------ 7.5/10/12.5 -------10/12.5/15kg

Close Grip Bench Press 20/22.5/25------22.5/25/27.5 ------25/27.5/30kg

One Arm DB Row 6/7.5/10---------7.5/10/12.5--------10/12.5/15kg

pws - 2 slices prosciutto

Missed my 11.30 am coffee  because I had to bring my car for it's NCT. In Ireland cars have to be tested every 2 years to ensure they are road-worthy, or in my old '99 model, every 1 year! It almost passed, I just have to replace a tyre, so big relief.

12.30pm - egg foo yung scramble. Prawns (wow hard to get prawns without weird stuff - lactic acid..in prawns??) leftover broc & cabbage from last night, eggs mixed with aminos, 5 spice and sesame oil. Tasty!

7a5e1f5216bb11e2af7822000a1fb04e_6.jpg

no snack all afternoon :) except for 2 (begrudgingly given!) segments of dd's clementine.

5.45pm - Zucchinni Boleganase

5c6e322016e811e28dfe22000a1c9e1d_6.jpg

I will prob share an apple with ds later.

Cavegrrl, my commiserations re the eggs :(

Evening all, over half way there & feeling good :)

7.15am - egg loaf & black coffee

11am - cc coffee

12.30pm - griddled chicken breast, salad, and shawarma mayo

e6ff24f6178511e2958512313d26385c_6.jpg

3pm - small portion carrots sticks & shawarma mayo

5.30pm - Maggief's pork & apple dinner from slowcooker. YUM!

We mashed the apples on top of the meat and it was just like apple sauce. Lots left for my lunch tomorrow and dh is even going to have some of the meat with his breakfast tomorrow (could I be slowly slowly be catchying the monkey?)

I cooked (for my 1st time ever!) brussel sprouts which I fried up with bacon.

Check out my lovely new bamboo chopping board (purchase inspired by W30 daily!)

Hey Derval, glad you are feeling brighter again.

Re the school lunch leaflet, I have to say I think you are being a little harsh. While the non-fruit choices aren't paleo, they are a heck of a lot better than what a lot of children get in their daily lunch boxes and it is admirable imo that the school is taking an interest in this area at all. Paleo is a niche nutritional lifestyle choice. It's not something that can, or should be enforced on people. It is a choice-and to my mind it is one best made by adults who are making an informed decision in relation to why it is a great way to eat. I am all in favour of encouraging my children to eat plenty of foods that fall within the paleo sphere-and they do- but I certainly wouldn't expect them to embrace it entirely in the way that I am. That is for my children to decide when they are older and making their own personal and informed choices.

Just my tuppence worth anyway.

Fair enough SG, the leaflet was just handed out by school, it's made by safefood.

I've come to believe that bread and the like are not the healthy food we've been taught all these years and if I think the way I eat is the healthiest thing for me I extend that to my children, and think it's the healthiest thing for them too. I don't expect them to embrace paleo, they don't even know the word, but I would like to get their diet as close to mine as I can (without causing too much hardship).

And I don't think eating whole unprocessed foods should be seen as "niche"...the fact that it is is a sad statement on how wrong society has gone.

Even without the bread (somedays double-bread!) in the leaflet, low-fat yogurt? low-fat cheese?

Anyways, past my bed-time! was out at PA AGM

I really agree with this. The thing that *really* bugs me is that our kids bring home leaflets like that, and then we look at the monthly school lunch menu and it's all "hamburgers and french fries," "pizza," "sloppy joes," "bean and cheese burrito," "corn dogs."

Frustration!

Ooo, pretty flowers! And you totally deserve them, for the support you provide on this forum alone!

My best friend was a lunch lady in Alaska this summer, and they gave her minimum amounts of wheat and dairy to incorporate into each meal. No veg minimums, however! I guess the veg lobby is less powerful than the others!

Hi! You are sounding good, even with the complications of life!

I'm currently living in a house with a loaf of bread too... so far so good!

I feel the pain. I am in a mixed marriage -- The Mister is a free eater and metabolizes everything in about 12 minutes. So while I have meat wrapped in romaine lettuce, he has a cheeseburger. While I have grapes, he eats licorice. While I have trail mix, he eats salt and vinegar chips. While I drink (another) Perrier, he has a beer, or white Russian, or rum smoothie. Sigh. There is no justice.

I'm with you on this one. The only way to bring along a healthier generation is to teach our kids how to eat. My daughter is a grown up but that hasn't stopped me from preaching paleo to her and teaching her how to cook REAL food ... and it's working. She is eating WAY better than she used to, is eliminating almost all grains and dairy from her diet and feels better for it. I WANT her to be as healthy as she can be and that means I can't condone or enable food choices that we all know result in increased illness. When you have the chance to empower your little ones, by all means, train their palates to enjoy real food and to shun the crap that's packaged and sold as "food." good on ya for nurturing the kiddos from the inside out.

Ah look I know the lunch suggestions aren't all ideal-I suppose what just struck me when I read it last night was that at least it encourages a daily piece of fruit to school and there's a bit of protein in the main options (well apart from Wed which is very low on the protein side of things with just the cheese on the cracker) and I was thinking that if it meant that some kids started to bring fruit where they previously had been bringing ultra crappy things like those processed cheese dunkers or sugar-loaded cereal bars and jam sandwiches-then it was a small step in the right direction. Slowly slowly catchee monkey and all that.

When I used the term niche in relation to paleo, I'm referring mainly to the no-wheat aspect of it I guess. It's not all that niche (thankfully) to eat unprocessed foods such as vegetables, meat, fish, eggs and fruit-but the wheat element is a little more off the beaten track and would take people a little longer to take on board- unless they are of a similar mindset to any of us here who have embraced (that word again ;) ) it happily, having read the science behind it and felt the benefits of it.

I have very much taken on board the notion that if the things I eat are good for me, then I should be giving my children the same types of food. And I do. And sometimes they like it and sometimes they don't. They are not wheat-free currently. I'm okay with that-I am trying to guide them consistently towards better food choices but it is a process, a transition and it won't happen overnight (unlike with their mammy who was happy to make the change to paleo literally overnight! I think with children, or at least my children-and in the end of the day I can only speak for my own family of course- a more gradual approach might be more effective in the long run-I'm hoping to try and avoid rebellious backlash that might occur down the line if the 'rules' are too inflexible) They still eat pasta, pittas and home made brown bread. They may go wheat-free down the line but at the moment they have greatly broadened their food horizons and are open to trying new things-this is a real change for my youngest who is an extremely fussy eater with a very limited range of foods she will eat. The fact is she will now tentatively ask for a little bit of sweet potato from my plate or a spoon of avocado or some blueberries or poached egg. She has also developed an expensive taste for steak :) . Fruit wise, she used to be just a strawberries and apples girl but over the summer she branched out into eating cherries, kiwis, bananas, grapes, plums and those little flat peaches. In Portugal she tried the fresh sardines and realised she loved them-I mean absolutely devoured them! Previously she wouldn't have even dared to try them. We are getting places-slowly but surely.

In an ideal world, the food pyramid would be changed and people would jump on board and start feeling the benefits and reaping the health rewards.

In reality, it takes a little bit longer-but hey, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Sure I wouldn't like anyone to think that I'm super-mom with my paleo-pal-kids :) I'm not, like you SG, I'm making a gentle transition with them...they still have pasta 1-2 times a week, and friggin cereal every day. The cereal is the next big thing I want rid of, and it'll be hard cos they love it.

But I have got rid of sandwiches in their lunchboxes. Lily takes oatcakes (marginally better?) & meat, Alex takes cheese & meat, and they both take carrot sticks and fruit. I am looking fwd to changing this up a bit now I have Sarah F's new book.

Their dinner is 5 times out of 7 proper paleo.

They no longer have a treat every day, and on Friday they get half a small bar of dark choc as their treat.

So like yourself a big improvement, so when she brings home leaflets that tell her a bread roll a day is a healthy option it irks me. Did you follow the safefood debacle on boards SG?

No, I didn't see that safefood debate-I don't really frequent boards that much. Why, btw, did they ban the food logging? Thought that was weird!

What's the name of Sarah's new book? Always nice to get fresh ideas!

That's great that your children have 5 out of 7 paleo dinners-do they generally have the things you post in your log? I really must try and branch out again on the dinner front with my pair-push the boundaries another bit!

Yes, usually my dinner is their dinner. If I am having a pile of veg with my meat I will do them the frozen roasties they (and dh!) love so much, but if I'm doing sweet potatoes they get them. I have found with Lily in particular that if I let her help prepare the food she will be very enthusiastic about eating it :) and making everyone say "thank you for dinner, Lily" (I am very strict that everyone must thank me for dinner!)

However I often feel torn between doing the right thing and doing the easier thing  I know they would be thrilled with a cooked breakfast in the morning but the extra effort & expense is an issue. Hmmmmmm...I think that applies to a lot of parenting!

Here's the book

The safefood MEGA-thread is here and the closing of food-diaries here . The no food diary rule made my w30 thread pointless

Great idea re Lily helping with the food prep. My daughter sometimes helps too but frequently when I try and get her to eat some of whatever it is, she tells me very earnestly that 'we all have different tastes Mammy', while pushing it firmly to one side

Thanks for the links. Will have a read later when I have a bit of time.

I have a voucher for Amazon-will order that book I think.

I heard a good thing on a paleo parents podcat the other day, tell her that your tastebuds change every 10 days and if she didn't like something before/this time she might like it today/next time

copied from a science website -

Taste buds are in a constant state of flux. Although they seem to us to be of unchanging composition, all 10,000 taste buds are shed and regenerated every 10 days.

Sounds just like my house except thanks to hubby and MIL, the kids get some sort of a treat (lollipop, popsicle, cookie, ice cream) every darn day. Thank goodness they do tones of sports and like healthy food too. Not perfect but WAY BETTER THAN IT USED TO BE at my house!

LOVE THIS!

I agree it's hysterical and very motivating as well as confidence building to walk by the men to the squat rack and do some REAL lifting in front of them.
