Fell off Today, I Need a post-workout recommendation...

Recommended Posts

Today I timed my meals slightly wrong and after I worked out I felt RAVENOUS. It's about a 45 minute subway ride home and I ended up eating a soy-heavy protein bar from the bodega, and then thought "eff it I already screwed up" and ate half a chocolate bar also (the latter being totally a mental-fueled self-sabotage.)

My question is, what can I eat immediately after I exercise on the subway ride home when I feel like I need instant protein? It has to be something that can sit in my gym bag for at least 2.5 hours.

Thank you!!!!

Some ideas that come to mind are almonds, pepperoni peppettes (so cured that a little room temperature won't hurt 'em!), or pistachios? And the timing thing is important too so that you don't feel that hungry immediately if you know you have a commute home still. One thing that helps me stave off hunger is eating more fats during the day.

I'm super new but these are some ideas :) Good luck!

You want protein and carbs not fat post WO so the nuts are not a good idea.

I do a few bites of cold chicken and sweet potato or carrot sticks. I make sweet potato rounds in the oven but eat them cold and they are delicious!

Post workout needs to be lean protein and ideally a starchy carb, so tuna packed in water, chicken breast, sweet potato etc... any of those things can stay in your gym bag for a couple hours... just remember when we used to keep our lunches in our desks at school.. we ate those room temp and didn't die.

Nuts, fatty cuts of meat and fruit are not good for post workout... fat slows the absorption of protein into your muscles and the sugar in fruit preferentially replaces liver glycogen instead of muscle glycogen so that's not great either. Lean protein and starchy carb.

I do Epic bars and baby food pouches.   :P

These are not ideal...

Bars are only considered compliant for emergencies (which a planned post workout meal is not) and fruit replaces liver glycogen over muscle glycogen... unless these are sweet potato baby food pouches with nothing else... then we would ask why not just eat a sweet potato instead of a processed food...

Can you take a small cooler/lunch box with an ice pack in your gym bag? That would give you more options instead of limiting it to things that can only be room temp.
