KatieKitt
I started my first Whole30 yesterday. I'm a pretty mindful eater and already ate limited dairy and sugars but felt at this point, I needed to take things to the next level because I've been suffering from joint inflammation and headaches. I'm hoping by eliminating the inflammatory agents in my food that this will improve. I'm sad because I asked my parents to do this with me because my mom is morbidly obese and has chronic pain and my dad has diabetes. Both are carb addicted. My father's breakfast is 5-6 slices of white bread with peanut butter and he has a bowl of cereal at 11pm while watching the news and wonders why his morning glucose is 200+ on 15 units of insulin. <sigh> My mother goes to bed with a huge mug of milk and a bag of cheese curls or cheddar popcorn. They both have an unhealthy relationship with food and it's killing them. My mother said that this isn't a realistic or sustainable diet because it's too restrictive and she's not going to waste her time reading labels. I'm upset because these are the two people who need this the most. Any suggestions for opening their minds to at least trying this?
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted April 14, 2016 Moderators Share Posted April 14, 2016 Hey there! Congrats for finding your way here! Sometimes the best way to convince someone is by quietly doing it and allowing them to see the results on their own. Your parents eating habits are alarming and I can see why you would want to help them change. Maybe they could commit to not eating packaged foods? Then they wouldn't need to read labels? Anything is fair game for them as long as it doesn't come in a package/bag/box? Really tho, people have to want to help themselves and if they don't want to move from where they are and get better, as sad and frustrating as it is, you cannot MAKE them... you can only be a good representation of what it looks like to take care of yourself... AngelEyz
Wow... I think not reading the labels and assuming if it's in the grocery store and labeled as food, it's okay is how a lot of us got here. Like you, I'm a mindful eater, but hoping (planning) for my Whole30 to make me even *more* aware of what I'm fueling my body with. Good luck... I'm starting a couple of weeks behind you and will use my "prep" time to soak in the experiences of those ahead of me on this journey.
