Melissa's First W30

Here we go! I started on April 18th, after a 1 week "trial" of eating 90% whole 30 (until the last weekend where I pigged out on chinese food..).

Day one was alright. Sugar dragon hit after dinner HARD. I was also really hungry all day and ate all of my "emergency" snacks. To be fair I went on a long 10km walk the day before, which is something that will typically really bring my appetite up.

Day two went really well! I felt good and had SUCH a good sleep and woke up really refreshed! I noticed I was going to the bathroom every hour, despite drinking my usual amount of water (1 liter before and 1 liter after lunch while at work). I assume that's the water weight? No sugar cravings all day :)

Day three is today! I slept horribly last night after a late night phone call and couldn't get myself back to sleep. However I still woke up feeling really good and alert. I feel much more comfortable body wise and all that bloat from my chinese food binge is gone I think haha. My challenge today is to get off of these snacks. I've been so used to having 5-6 small meals a day. I had a bigger  breakfast this morning and ate more avocado, so I'm hoping that will tide me over until lunch. I know WHY I need to cut the snacks, but I do get legit hungry between meals still. The biggest time is getting home from work, it's been 5 hours since lunch. If I make dinner right then, I'm going to be hungry by about 9. Yesterday I came home and had a couple of dates, went for a walk and made dinner at 6:30 and that was perfect.

Day 4!! I woke up feeling GREAT. Woke up an hour before my alarm, got up and made a big breakfast and took my dog for a walk. I ate way more than I ever do for breakfast, hoping the "snack dragon" doesn't arrive before lunch. I'm having a weird time with digestion though. I was really gassy and bloated yesterday afternoon/evening and things were pretty soft this morning (haha TMI...) which is pretty unusual for me. I had some kombucha last night with dinner so I hope that helps.

Decided to start tracking meals here so...

Day 3:

M1: 2 boiled eggs, grapefruit, 1/2 an avocado, couple of blackberries

M2: Chicken, broccoli, rutabaga, 1 apple and a coconut lara bar

M4: Pre workout with half a banana, almond butter, pecans and coconut flakes. Realized once I started the walk why a banana wasn't the best choice and should have stuck with an egg and some nuts, more protein less carbs. Was planning on going for a good hour long walk/run and then my calf completely seized up 10 mins in :(

M5: Mahi mahi, salad with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, roasted sweet potatoes

Day 4:

M1: 3 scrambled eggs with a handful of mixed greens, 1/2 an avocado and salsa. Half banana, almond butter and coconut flakes. SO MUCH FOOD.

M2: Chicken, broccoli and sweet potatoes, 1/2 an avocado

M3: (will be) Pulled pork on a bed of greens with chopped raw veggies, side of seared asparagus

Also since I forgot to add this with my first post... beginning stats:

5'6" age 29

Weight - 168 (I know this is largely water weight/bloat, I had a lot of junk for 3 days before day 1. Lately I've been about 160-164)

Waist - 29"

Thigh - 24.5"

Hips - 35"

Butt - 42"

Day 5 :)

Yesterday ended up being tough, but I made it! I had an emergency and had to hit the road without time to eat at home. Typically this would mean grabbing a burger for the road. I entertained the idea, since I'm not even a week in it wouldn't be that hard to restart, but instead I stopped at a grocery store and picked up a bag of baby carrots, snap peas, mandarin oranges, a banana, cashews and some prosciutto. Instead of snacking for the whole 4 hour drive, I ate for 30 minutes until I felt full and didn't feel the need to eat again until several hours later (7.5 hours of driving). Really happy with myself haha

This morning I don't feel great but that's mostly to do with only 5 hours of sleep. Wasn't hungry when I woke up, but had a banana with almond butter, coconut flakes and pecans. I brought 3 hard boiled eggs and 2 oranges with me to work expecting my appetite would be up soon, but still nothing. I'm going to just try and hold off until lunch.

Day 6! Ahh I feel good for sticking to this during the work week and having good feelings about the weekend.

Today I woke up feeling crappy. Headache and groggy. I'm REALLY cranky, starting last night. I guess that's right along with the timeline though so I'm looking forward to feeling good on what I expect will be Monday.

My meals haven't been too exciting! This morning I had bulletproof coffee, banana with almond butter and pecans and coconut flakes and a Lara bar. Once the food settles I'm going to go and run the stairs near my place and hopefully that improves my mood!

Day 8!

I think I can taste tiger blood? I woke up feeling pretty awesome and energetic! Hit the gym early this morning before work. I'm noticing I'm not really having any cravings for anything at all. Having crazy weird vivid dreams still. I didn't really get the "just want a nap" phase, or at least not yet?  I'm still kind of bloated/gassy and not exactly regular though. Might go grab a kombucha over lunch.

Yesterday I was in a decent mood and meal  prepped for about 5 hours. I destroyed my kitchen and it was a TON of work but I'm happy to have easy meals to grab and go for work all week. It's rare for me to stick to a diet over the weekend, so it's a big deal that I did it haha. Knowing I'm hitting days 10-11 and the typical quit phase I wanted to make sure I'm well prepared to keep it going!

Day 9 is here already! This is going fast so far.

The dreams are WEIRD. I end up waking up because of it and being creeped out haha. No nightmares and not dreaming of food, it's just way more vivid than normal.

I made the BEST dinner last night. Pulled pork (from Costco!) in lettuce wraps with salsa and guac, with sweet potatoes and made my own dill dip (the mayo recipe and added fresh dill and paprika). It almost felt like cheating.

Tried out the salmon cakes this morning and they were not good at all. Maybe I just don't like fish for breakfast? haha. They were way too fishy tasting. Just ate the two eggs I made with it, had some carrots and a banana with almond butter instead. The boyfriend seems to like them though so he can finish them!

I'm feeling really energetic and awake today.  Muscles are a little sore from my workout yesterday though! I just got the kayla itsines workout guides so I think I'm going to start doing that this week now that my energy is up!

Day 10! Ahhh! 1/3 of the way through :D

Yesterday ended up being one of the hardest days so far. I was craving sugar all afternoon and it didn't stop all evening. My BF bought a bag of peanut Glossettes (which I LOVE) and I realllllly wanted a couple, but I resisted. I decided I needed a really flavourful dinner so I made the coconut curry chicken. So good!

Woke up early this morning for the gym and did a BBG (Kayla Itsines) workout. OH MY GOD. I've heard her workouts are hard but dang!

Had some of the egg fritatta thing I made on the weekend. I'm getting bored of food now, which I guess is normal with the timeline. I've come too far to stop now!

I love this haha, it must be a name thing because I did the EXACT same thing! I trialed it for a week to psych myself up but didn't cut out the gluten completely and then had Chinese food on the Saturday, along with 2 bottles of wine..... and started Monday the 25th. Good for you for holding so much will power with the glossette raisins! It's super hard. Good luck on this journey you seem to be doing great.

Ok weird kind of gross thing to report on LOL. For the longest time I've had this small sebaceous cyst on the back of my leg. It's not really a problem or a huge concern of mine. Anyway, today I noticed it's like half the size it usually is? What the heck? Now I'm wondering what the heck I've been eating that's been contributing to it or if it's some weird fluke!

Day 11 :)

Yesterday afternoon was tough. I got REALLY dizzy and felt really weird around 3pm. Searched the forum and the suggestion was more salt/carbs/food. I went over what I ate the last few days and it's been pretty good, but I think adding HIIT workouts means I need more calories/carbs. Had some potatoes with dinner last night and added more salt. Leftover potatoes from breakfast this morning with an omelette and added salt to that, too. I feel good this morning so far!

My muscles were REALLY sore yesterday afternoon from DOMS. Usually I would take a creatine supplement for this. I took some tylenol and a muscle relaxant and went for a walk and early to bed, and it's not too bad today! I was expecting worse! Taking an active rest day and I'll hammer out another tough workout tomorrow and see if I recover this fast again.

Day 12! ya!

Yesterday was crazy. Craving EVERYTHING. I stopped at the grocery store for a couple things and could have eaten everything. I'm craving pickles?? I don't really like pickles!

Made tandoori pulled chicken for dinner and ate it in lettuce wraps. I could only finish one and some of the raw veggies on the side. Just wasn't very hungry. This morning I'm not really hungry either, it's almost 9am and I just have no interest in eating right now so I'm just going to wait.

Was also feeling really tired last night, I went to bed at 8pm and slept until 7am! I feel good now though. Today I woke up feeling smaller and my stomach is definitely tighter.

Seems like everything I'm experiencing is normal and right along with the timeline so I guess that's good news! Tiger blood is coming...

I think I hit the "nap phase" late? I'm SO tired today. I didn't eat breakfast until 10am. Have a mild headache today and just want to nap. I would think my lack of an appetite (especially last night) is partially responsible for that as I definitely haven't eaten enough, but I feel nauseous stuffing myself when I'm not hungry!

I did something "against the rules". I put all my food into MFP because I was curious on macro breakdown. I use macros when I'm weigh lifting as I find it's SUPER important to be hitting my nutritional targets to keep energy up and recover quickly and was worried I wasn't getting enough of something (I usually feel like this when carbs are too low), maybe that's why I've suddenly been feeling "off" as I started hitting the gym hard this week. The numbers seem to be ok though, still getting plenty of carbs and protein and fiber and sodium. I'm chalking this all up to being normal as it does fall in line with the timeline still. If I'm still off in a couple days I guess I could try more potatoes and get those carbs up. In the past my carbs would come from quinoa, rice and oats, hitting the same amount of carbs as now, but I didn't feel as woozy and tired as I am right now.

The pros so far as my skin looks great! Fresh and clear. Haven't had a single breakout since I started. Digestion seems to be leveling out now and I'm more "regular". Sleeping really deeply and through the night, and waking up before my alarm.

Ok I'm posting a lot today haha

So I had a cocoa coconut chew Lara bar a little over an hour ago (right after breakfast, and I've had this breakfast of eggs/chicken/veg all week without issues). The headache got worse, and my cheeks and chest are flushed and hot. What the hell?!?!

I've had just the coconut chew with no reaction. The only difference in ingredients is walnuts instead of cashews, and cocoa powder. I haven't had either thus far on Whole 30. I think I will avoid both until reintroduction and see what happens... but I think I just found something I'm reactive too

Googling like crazy. I think it was the cocoa. I'm sensitive to COCOA. This is the worst discovery ever!!

Ok. Nothing is for sure yet, I know. I won't be having ANY cocoa for the rest of whole 30. On reintroduction I'll add it to some sweet potatoes or something. Or with some mashed banana.. and see what happens. But the symptoms I'm experiencing today are right in line with a cocoa sensitivity.

Day 15 has arrived! Can't believe I'm halfway through.

It just kind of feels normal now. I still kind of want "cheat" foods, but more just rice, oats, beans, rice cakes. I'm ok without them though.

Feeling pretty good, nothing phenomenal really. Pretty groggy this morning as I took melatonin to fall asleep last night and it ended up being one of those brain fog mornings it occasionally causes.

I had FOUR DAYS of severe DOMS after what was a pretty typical workout for me. Was taking muscle relaxants and tylenol, drinking a ton of water, lots of protein, still hurt! I finally just took my post workout supplement with creatine because I know it would help.. and sure enough today I don't feel a thing. So I'm not totally convinced that whole 30 is best for muscle recovery :/

Ahhh I'm having another weird reaction :/

Had a salad for lunch. Mixed greens, red pepper, radish, carrots, cucumber, tuna (canned in water, no soy or additives), avocado, hemp seeds, and made a dressing of olive oil and balsamic with a shake of cayenne pepper. I've always eaten all of these things without an issue. I've had all of these throughout whole 30 thus far. What the heck? I'm itchy and my face is red and hot and my fingers are swollen and warm. I feel like my body is ultra sensitive to everything right now.
