pwnitat0r
I started on May 9 (Australian time). I guess you could say this is my second attempt as I did start it previously and I got to around day 8 or 9 and started to feel awesome, but for whatever reason I stopped. Anyway, it is good motivation as "light at the end of the tunnel", because I do know what's on the other side and that is a feeling I want to obtain PERMANENTLY! But, this time I also know that the foods I eat are probably 99% of the why I feel the way I do! I've had 3 surgeries in the last 6 months - all for a cochlear implant. The first two were failed surgeries and finally the third one was successful (always get a second opinion!). Two failed surgeries in two weeks was tough for me mentally and since I was dizzy and unable to do much (couldn't even read a book or watch a movie), I spent a lot of time laying on the lounge doing nothing and eating chocolate, drinking pepsi max. I really started to get fat after that and it's just been spiraling out of control since. I've suffered some depression too no doubt. But now I've finally had a successful surgery, it's time to take charge of my life again and make a new start so to speak. My main motivation for this is to get my confidence back and become mentally strong again, I'm a shadow of the person I used to be. My thinking is that If I get my nutrition in order, this will help my hormones which will take care of how I feel - that will build confidence which will feed into all other areas of my life - my relationship, the gym, work, study, etc. Success begets more success! As a side note, I have been feeding my dogs raw food and bones. Speaking to a guy I buy my dogs food from made me aware of the importance of getting grass finished, wild/organic meats, etc. So moving away from chicken and onto grass finished lamb/beef, venison, duck, turkey, tripe... I've noticed improvements in only a couple of weeks for my dogs - leaner, more energy, their coats are much more shiny. I thought to myself, my dogs are eating better than me! Surely I deserve the same level of quality nutrition and nourishment? Hence, Whole30. Day 1 After binging on ice cream over the weekend before starting this, I woke up with a headache and feeling very angry. The anger may have come from a photo I saw of myself taken on the weekend - seeing it made me realise how far I had slipped and what a lazy, disgusting, fat slob I have become! From a lean 185lbs several years ago when I was wrestling competitively, to fat and soft 225.7lbs the day before starting Whole30. It's not just the weight gain, I've noticed I've become mentally weaker with each pound gained. The thing I miss the most is being mentally strong and confident. Breakfast: eggs with avocado, batch filter coffee Lunch: turkey mince with veges Snack: batch filter coffee and apple Dinner: salmon with veges Day 2 Woke up feeling better despite the fact my head was not that great. It was better than being in a fog from sugar. Breakfast: eggs & veges, batch filter coffee Lunch: turkey mince with veges, apple Snack:batch filter coffee and pear Dinner: lamb chops with veges Day 3 I slept really well last night, woke up feeling okay. Hungry and a bit dizzy. Head hurts a bit, but felt better after my coffee. Breakfast: eggs, avocado, banana. Man, that banana is the tastiest banana I've had in a long time! Freshly ground Kenya Ichimara coffee (I LOVE my coffee!) with coconut cream - delicious! Lunch: mince with veges Dinner: Meat with veges (haven't had it yet, but that's what it will be) Disclaimer: my food may sound bland and boring, but it's actually awesome and full of flavour! My girlfriend is a really good cook who is doing this with me and no doubt she makes this much easier for me to do with her cooking.
pwnitat0r
Day 4 Slept REALLY good last night, I slept like a baby and woke up feeling refreshed after a solid 8 hours. It appears I over ate at breakfast, I went to work feeling overly full and a bit sick. I'm starting to realise when I am full and satiated which is pretty amazing considering I over eat at just about every meal despite the fact I feel full. This time it didn't feel good, different when you have whole, nutritious food opposed to sugary carbs. Breakfast: eggs, avocado, banana, coffee with coconut cream Lunch: grass finished steak cooked medium-rare with veges Dinner: Seafood - snapper, prawns, calamari Noticed my throat is starting to feel sore. Not sure if it's tonsillitis or flu-like symptoms. Day 5. Woke up at 5am with LOUD tinnitus in my left ear. I did just have surgery on that ear 2 weeks ago so not sure if that's related. My throat is also REALLY sore. Despite that, I woke up feeling good, I was awake and alert immediately. Breakfast: eggs, avocado, sweet potato (ate less than yesterday), coffee with coconut cream. Lunch: steak with veges Dinner: Almost 15% of the way there! I'm sure the first week is the most challenging. Excited to buy food and prep for our meals next week. My mum told me she's been good except she had chips with dinner on day 3. I gave her some tough love and told her there's no in between! She's either doing this or she's not. The chips will cause inflammation and upset her hormones, so start again and get on board properly! Next time she can slice potatoes and cook them in the oven. pwnitat0r
Day 5 dinner: turkey curry. NOM NOM NOM! Ate 2 big bowls because it was very soothing and I feel sick, but I don't know if I am or not. Felt really bad today. Sore throat. Headache. I don't know if I'm really getting sick, or it's just the flu-like symptoms. Despite that, I knuckled down and had a really productive day which I suppose I wouldn't do if I was really sick? I could be right on track with the timeline. All I feel like doing now is sleeping, good thing I have the weekend for days 6 &7.
pwnitat0r
Day 6! 20% of the way. Breakfast: eggs with avocado, coffee with coconut cream, leftover turkey curry. Lunch: squid, mince and salad Dinner: lamb, sweet potato chips & veges. Starting to feel really good! Flu-like symptoms have decreased dramatically. The energy to exercise has slowly been building throughout the week and I have been holding off since advised not do anything until 3 weeks after surgery. But, today the energy was too much! I went for a ~5km run without stopping - first time I've done that for a looong time. Considering I'm at the heaviest I've ever been and haven't done much exercise for the last 12 months this is pretty remarkable. There's only one thing to attribute it to - wholesome nutrition! I have a goal to get back to 8km in 40mins in the next few months, then make improvement on that time once I get there. Today is also the first day I encountered slight cravings for junk. I wanted Pepsi Max, beer, or potato chips. Nothing major, very very minor. I'm enjoying eating my food so much at the moment and I also love the way I feel, I value that way too much to jeopardise it. Plus, I've only got to take one look at a photo taken of myself last weekend for motivation!
pwnitat0r
Day 7. Got 3.5 hours sleep last night. Might have been due to the coffee I had around 5:30pm. But, I also woke up ravenously hungry so I ate some beef brisket and the juice/sauce that was in the slow cooker, and a banana. It's the best I've ever felt on 3.5 hours sleep! lol. I worked my second job and I was able to catch a bit of a nap later in the day. The flu-like symptoms aren't a figment of my imagination afterall! I have yellow/green pleghm, my nose is runny. I probably am sick afterall and might see a Doctor this week. Breakfast: skipped because I wasn't hungry due to my midnight eating. But, I did have a long black with coconut cream Lunch: lamb & veges Mid-afternoon: lamb & veges, turkey balls with curry sauce (very small meal) Dinner: Veal shoulder with potatoes & carrots. pwnitat0r
Day 8 Overslept a little bit due to so little sleep on Saturday night. I was only 10mins late for work and I took my breakfast with me. I had the runs pretty bad this morning. Onto the toilet first thing when I woke up, then again immediately when I got to work. I have a task every month at work that takes me 3 days to complete. I'm halfway through it after 1 day and I spent an hour doing other miscellaneous stuff as well. I would say increased productivity from better brain function. I like to think so at least anyway! Breakfast: turkey meat balls, veges & curry sauce, coffee with coconut cream Lunch: leftover veal from last night Dinner: prawns, beef mince & veges I normally have a black coffee in the afternoon after lunch at work. I didn't have it today as I didn't feel the need for it - normally it's had as a pick me up to get me through the afternoon. I also take a multi vitamin and fish oil every day. A lot of fish oil right now since I'm so fat. I alsodrink 4-5L of water a day (135-170 oz. for you American folks)
Deerobert
Hi Pwnitat0r, just reading other people's logs for ideas and I have to send you a big congratulations for sticking with it after surgery. I think I would have taken much longer to get my act together after 2 failed. I hope that it is going well with the implant. I think these are the worst days to get through to about Day 11 so keep it up.
madness
Sounds like you are doing great! There's not a lot of fat listed in your food logs - are you adding some to each meal, more than just what the food is cooked in? I have found that i'm really sensitive to a low-fat meal and don't feel good if I don't include enough. My personal favorite is homemade mayo, but there's also coconut oil, olives, avocados. And try go to get more vegetables at breakfast! I know that is a hard one for a lot of people! Are you put under general anesthesia for cochlear implants? I read awhile back that it can take 6 months for your body to truly recover from being put under...let alone 3 times! Make sure your water intake is good too! pwnitat0r
Madness, I'm not too sure about the fat to be honest because I admit my girlfriend takes care of all the food, I just eat it. She's an amazing cook (WAY better than me, so she cooks and I clean) and my generic descriptions don't do her food any justice. I'll try to post some photos. I think we get some fat from the meat. We sometimes eat beef brisket and I'm not shy about eating the fat in the meat - I reckon that's the best bit! I have said we need more vegetables (easy to say when I'm not preparing, right?), but we can definitely improve on this. I have not actually read whole30, there is a book right? I'm up to chapter 10 in it Begins With Food. I probably don't know the details 100%. But, I don't need to get it perfect, I just need to start! pwnitat0r
Day 9. Onto the toilet first thing when I woke up. Breakfast: omelette with eggs, spinach, onion, mushrooms and avocado. Coffee with coconut cream. Lunch: Turkey mince balls with sauce comprised of tinned tomatoes, chili, onion, capsicum, carrots, green beans, zucchini. Dinner: beef mince loaded with cumin (yuck!) and sweet potato mash I had cravings for something sweet when I was eating my dinner. But, I promised myself to get through this week, especially through 11-12 which are meant to be the hardest (I think this is where I quit last time). This week will also better reflect how I feel overall and given I've already lost a belt notch I'm sure the results will continue to come with each week. I got new work shirts in December last year after my old ones didn't fit me. Now my new shirts are already too tight! I'm determined to fit into my old shirts again (not just my new ones). pwnitat0r
Day 10. Diarrhea. Onto the toilet first thing when I woke up and again a couple of hours later. Hopefully my gut health is working its magic and restoring order! No doubt my gut health has been bad for a very long time... Anxiety, occasional heart burn, blah blah. Heart burn has completely gone since I started. Anxiety is improved, as is my depression. I have almost finished my 3 day monthly task at work in 2 days, and on both days I spent 1-1.5 hours doing other misc. stuff. I should knock it off in 1-2 hours this morning which means it has essentially taken 2 days instead of 3 to complete it. Breakfast: omelette with eggs, onion, spinach, mushroom, tomato & avocado. Coffee with coconut cream. Lunch: will be turkey mince balls, sauce with tinned tomatoes, chili, onion, capsicum and carrots, green beans and zucchini (it's in my bag now as I'm on the train to work) Dinner: TBA
pwnitat0r
Dinner: beef brisket, zucchini noodles, capsicum & onion. I feel DAMN AMAZING right now! Lots of energy and very sharp mentally - this is important to me, this is what I wanted most of all. We have a party this weekend which will be our first real test. So far all our meals have been eaten at home or we've taken our packed lunch to work. We know there will be lechon (roast pork) and fruit, so we are planning to eat that at this stage and that's all. pwnitat0r
Day 11 Breakfast: omelette with onions, mushrooms, spiniach, capsicum, tomato Lunch: beef brisket with onion, capsicum, zuchini Dinner: beef brisket with onion, capsicum, zuchini Cleaned my house like mad when I got home this afternoon to prepare for our air BNB guest. Plenty of energy to do it too! Then I went and got myself a gym membership! This is not normal for me.. normally when I come home I crash onto the couch and I'm too tired to do much else. Instead, I'm coming home and feeding both my dogs and stimulating them mentally through training for half an hour or so. My older dog (the other one is a puppy) is completely different dog as well, she's so much happier and more responsive to me lately. Overall, feeling FANTASTIC! Lots of energy, mentally sharp and able to focus. Very, very happy with the way I feel.
pwnitat0r
Day 12 breakfast: omelette with onion, mushroom, spinach, capsicum lunch: beef brisket dinner: osso buco stew with veges and potatoes Rushed home from work to take my puppy to her appointment to get vaccinated. Had plenty of energy to do so! I realised potatoes are advised against after getting further through It Starts With Food, but if the worst thing I'm eating is potatoes I'm probably doing okay. I DID have the flu for real I think. I had yellow/green phlegm and a cough, etc. But, I never went to the Doctor and it cleared up by itself. That has got to be the first time my body has ever been able to do that. I am really impressed!
pwnitat0r
Day 13 Coffee with coconut cream, then off to the gym... 5km in 28"53'. Not a fast time by any means, but that is the first time in a long time I've been able to run 5km without stopping - I said that on day 6 but I wasn't sure how far I ran exactly, so this confirms I did/can run 5km without stopping. I've done very little exercise for the past several months and only run twice in the past 4 weeks, so the only thing it can be attributed to is my nutrition. Now to bring my time (and weight) down! Breakfast: turkey mince with veges, coffee with coconut cream Lunch: pork, fruit* Dinner: osso buco stew *Today was the birthday party celebration I mentioned. I do believe the pork was marinated in something and probably contained sugar, but I did the best I could (short of taking my own food) so I'm not going to beat myself up over it if there was sugar in there and it was not strictly Whole30 compliant. I did not eat any of the cake, Lebanese sweets (which we took, lol), spring rolls, soft drink, etc. I wanted to avoid drawing attention and have people ask me if I'm on a diet and answer all the usual questions, etc. I'd rather people notice I've lost weight before I start answering questions about my food intake. pwnitat0r
Day 14 Breakfast: turkey mince with veges, coffee with coconut cream Lunch: Apple with almond, Brazil and cashew spread Dinner: goat curry with potatoes Cravings again today. I find that happens on weekends, probably due to the boredom factor.
pwnitat0r
Just rolling along at this point, the momentum makes it easy to keep rolling. Watched Food Inc. to better understand industrial farming vs grass fed, wild caught, etc. VERY good documentary and a real eye opener. Since then I have been trying to source grass fed, wild caught, poultry raised, etc. Grass fed beef is easily sourced. I know where to get free range eggs. Lamb should be pretty easy too, although I have not made much of an effort to get lamb yet. We have a big fish market in Sydney that has fresh fish every day, so no issues with wild caught fish either. Chicken and pork is very difficult, at least without paying an arm and a leg. $20-40/kilo (1kilo = 2.2lbs) for chicken is insane!!! Not a big fan of pork anyway so no real loss there, but I would like some bacon again in the future! . The weight is coming off me as well, my clothes are fitting much better, etc.
pwnitat0r
Another thing I noticed, I'm eating a lot less than before... I get full and I just say okay, that's enough... but, sometimes I'm really hungry and I'll eat two big bowls of whatever we're having. I eat as much as I want, but I'm choosing to eat less now more often than not. To give you an example, tonight we have roasted chicken. Before we would eat a whole chicken between us (mainly me), but tonight we both had a leg each and I had a little bit of breast and I was full. Plenty of chicken leftover that we don't normally get, lol
pwnitat0r
I found a place selling pasture raised birds 5mins away from me for $9/kg, the thing is they only have whole birds as pasture raised, all their cuts of breast, thighs, etc. are industrially farmed. To sum up my food sources: Free range eggs: 30 for $18, 60c each. Beef brisket: $13/kg Whole chicken: $9/kg Using 2-3 eggs in a meal for $1.2-1.80 is CHEAP. If you buy a sausage & egg muffin from McDonalds you're looking at $4 each. To put the pasture raised whole bird in perspective, it costs $13-14. My girlfriend and I can get dinner from it, plus leftovers for 2 meals.. If we buy our lunch, it would be $10-13 each.. so even if the pasture raised bird is double the price of an industrial farmed bird, so what. Veges are cheap, so only $1-2 to add some veges to our meal. I would assume (I don't know) that you need less of better quality food to feel satiated as you get more bang for your buck from the vitamins and nutrients in food that has been looked after. pwnitat0r
Last night I made caramel slice for "Australia's Biggest Morning Tea" at work - to raise money for cancer. First time I have ever baked something without tasting it. Normally I eat a few pieces for breakfast which is why I was not too keen to make it, but I got talked into it and I try to honour my word. Delivered it to work and there was a table full of sugar. Bailed on the morning tea so I was not tempted.

pwnitat0r
Had some issues posting before, so the post above was like a test and this is a copy/paste: I am working my second job today which I have a designated belt and uniform for. My pants have been super tight and hard to button up for a while now and several weeks before I started this program I went up a belt notch. I can now comfortably put my pants on and button them up, I also went down a belt notch. So back to square one before I became a massive fatty boombah? Now I'm just a fatty boombah Yesterday I drove 45mins to check out a meat market here in Sydney - I was in heaven! Every type of meat you could imagine was there.... Best of all, they grow their own cattle and have grass finished rump for $8/kg, vyeal blade $11/kg, veal rump $18/kg, Angus beef rump $13/kg, scotch fillet $20/kgs, Angus scotch fillet $25/kg. We kind of have a supermarket duopoly here, the two major super markets that dominate the market are Coles and Woolworths (with competition from Aldi). Those prices at the meat market are cheaper than Coles and Woolworths who have grain fed rubbish.... So once my freezer space is cleared out we will be going and stocking up for 2-3 months. I bought a second freezer several weeks ago for my dogs' food, but both my freezers are full of dog food at the moment. My dogs weigh 11kgs and 3.5kgs and don't require a great deal of food, so kind of a rookie mistake on my behalf to stack the freezers with their food. However, the 3.5kg dog is a growing puppy and hopefully she can eat her way through a freezer full of food quickly so I can make space! Off to buy free range eggs after work today, we go through 30 eggs a week it seems.

pwnitat0r
Hi Amy, I believe it was Pendle Hill Meat Market - http://pendlehillmeatmarket.com.au/ A bit of a drive depending on where you live, but worth it if you have plenty of freezer space and can stock up for a few months.
