TinaH2016
I started whole30 today with my husband, my BFF and her husband (although they live 4 hours away). I am 5'4, weigh over 200 lbs. My last lab test shows that I am in perfect health, but if that were true, why am I so tired all the time. Well, its because I am 5'4" and weigh over 200 lb... duh.. I love the book, especially where it says this is not hard (as compared to major life issues). I have a friend battling breast cancer, I have another friend whose daughter just had brain surgery for a neurological disorder so I can relate to THIS is not hard. Their battles are hard, this is challenging, could be frustrating (so I am told) but hard, no, this is not hard. I give you permission to call me out if I whine about any part of this journey, feel free to remind me about paragraph two. Now that the first three paragraphs start with I, let's look to you. When did you measure your first "success", what was it and what day did it happen? What did you find most challenging? How did you overcome it? Any advice for a newbie that you wish you had been given? THANKS EVERYONE - Wishing you all a Happy
TinaH2016
Today is day 2 - so far so good, no hangover. I made the mayo, a little too much lemon but tastes pretty good. I do miss chinese take out but my success measures are more important so no take out for me.

Jager07
Hi Tina! Welcome aboard! You have a great attitude and love your priorities....what's hard (your friends' challenges), what's not (but sometimes is) - Chinese takeout. I'm on Day 14 of my first Whole30. One of my first successes was on Day 3. Not only was I pumped about making it 10% through this initial journey, but made it through a concert without giving in to temptation. We hear it a lot and it's SO true....preparation is key. Keep up the great job and stay connected. The resources here, the forum and the online accountability will make things so much more fun and empowering.
TinaH2016
Thank you so much MommaGem and Jager07 for the encouragement. This program is one of the very few that really makes sense. I love that you celebrated making through the first 10%.

TinaH2016
Today is day 3. I am fortunate enough that I have not experienced the "The Hangover". I set a daily goal of a tervis of water by x time during the day. This is more challenging than I thought because my only "water" came in the form of Coke Zero. The lack of caffeine has not been a headache (hehe). Salad in a jar with spicy mayo as a dressing has been a real blessing. For the dressing, I made the mayo from the book, added paprika, cumin, salt, pepper and garlic, it was pretty thick so I added a little water to loosen it up. WOW! I surprised myself with how good it is. My seasonings that I added, I make in bulk and use them on most meats - love them, they spiced up the mayo nicely. Makes it easier to not miss my ranch dressing (after all, I am southern, we eat ranch on everything). I am still happy that my friend Karin introduced me to this. madness
Awesome job so far Tina! My first real victory was drastically improved sleep after the first week. I have had chronic insomnia on and off since having kids 6 years ago and it has been every night for probably close to a year. Sleep was worse for the first week, then I hit the exhaustion phase and slept 11 hours! But around day 8, it leveled out. I sleep about 8 hours now and feel great! So far my most challenging part has been convenience. I try to make extra food so there are always left overs in case my schedule doesn't permit cooking dinner. But a few times, there have been no leftovers and no time/energy for cooking. My kids are not on the diet so there's bread, peanut butter and jelly just staring at me...Basically, I've gotten over it by putting on my big girl pants and just cooking something compliant!!! It doesn't always have to be brilliant - scrambled eggs and steamed spinach with ghee, or taco salad, etc. At least my freezer is always full of raw ingredients. My main advice is to JUST DO IT. Honestly, it really isn't that hard. But go ahead and feel free to come here and whine. We've either all bee there or are going to go through it soon. Even if it's not the hardest thing you will ever have to go through, it is a challenge. I'm on day 51 now as I'd like to see some more results. If I can do it, so can you! madness
And it's awesome that you have such a great support system! My husband started with me...actually, I started with him to get his blood sugar in check, but he didn't last the first week. He then announced over last weekend he was going to join me...and already cheated last night. So it's gotta be great having your support!
Lorelai91
You mayo sounds delish Tina! Great that your setting small goals as you go along I always find getting in water the most difficult part too. Heres to a successful day 3!

TinaH2016
Hey Y'all Thanks for asking for the recipe. It has been a lifesaver (I am a ranch girl at heart). My Mayo recipe starts with that from the book (page 179). You definitely want to follow the instructions for putting it together. The extra for the spicy part I will try to break down (I make my own seasoning mix and use that) 1 1/4 cup light tasting olive oil 1 egg 1/2 tsp powdered mustard juice of 1/2 of a average size lemon (the book doesn't specify, I learned the hard way since I own a meyer lemon tree and they are the size of oranges) and then I add 1 tablespoon on Tina's Homemade Seasoning If it is too thick (which mine was), I add a smidgen of water to thin it down. My homemade seasoning consists of: 1 cup salt 1/2 cup of pepper 1/2 cup of garlic powder 1/2 cup of paprika 1/2 cup of onion powder 1/4 cup of cumin **if you don't own the book The Whole30 - The 30 day guide to Total Health and Food Freedom, its only $18 on Amazon and it is SO WORTH IT!! TinaH2016
My Day 4 journey - no dead bodies = successful day One very important lesson today "Cravings only last 3-5 minutes". This saved me today, over and over and over again today. I also shared it with my sisters and my son. My son is trying to quit smoking and he was wanting one badly. We talked on the phone an extra 5 minutes about his favorite sport, Disc Golf. This helped him and me. So far we are all still on track. I agree with the comment about prep. The salads in a jar are wonderful. To make hard cooked eggs, I bake 12 at a time I also cook several chicken breasts at one time and I also cook a batch of onion, bell peppers and mushrooms (Seasoned with above spice) so that I have it handy to add to other vegetables. 1 prep multiple uses Who knew being the baby of 6 would come in so handy. TinaH2016
I made to day 5. Although I think I may have cheated by accident. So a customer came into my shop, she was so inebriated that by standing near her I think I breathed in about a shot worth of alcohol. Still feeling pretty energetic but realized that my patience is not as strong as it once was. Thankfully I was in my car alone and don't have to apologize for being jerk-faced. I think our next venture will be making our own sausage. I love sausage but everything I saw on the shelf had sugar (dang it). Anyone have good sausage recipes they are compliant? Have discovered I don't care for La Croix, I guess I am not a seltzer water person - so sticking with regular water will be just fine.
madness
Homemade sausage is the best! I have a book called, simply enough, "Sausage" by Victoria Wise. The breakfast sausage recipe is a great jumping off point to create your own. My kids love the basic version minus the black pepper and cayenne and that's what I make most of the time. The ground pork I get is particularly fatty, so I just use 16 oz of it and up the salt to 1.5 tsp. 14 oz ground pork 2 oz minced salt pork 3/4 tsp rubbed sage (not ground!) 1/2 tsp dried thyme 1/2 tsp marjoram Scatn 1/4 tsp powdered ginger 1/4 tsp ground black pepper 1/8 tsp cayenne pepper 1 tsp kosher salt, or to taste Mix it all together with your hands and cook a bit to see if the salt content is right. TinaH2016
Today is day 6, a beautiful day here in southwest Florida. The sun in shining through the white and gray clouds. yeah yeah whatever.... I am cranky today. I think it is because my sleep has been interrupted the last two nights with hot flashes. Getting them during the day isn't enough. Yes, I am whining - the hot flashes are horrible, they are much more intense over the last two days. I know this will get better, I pray this will get better, I need for this to get better. oh, enough, time to pull up my big girl panties and suck it up buttercup. Y'all have a great Memorial Day weekend Here's to staying compliant during my first holiday on Whole30

TinaH2016
PHEW.... I made it through day 8! Happy Dance Happy Dance (why not burn an extra calorie or two - No I am not counting them) Please don't tell my Sunday School teacher, but I have been using this book as a bible. Got to tell you, my friend who is doing this with me, went to the store and tried on a pair of shorts - good news for her, they fit. Honestly, I am too much of a chicken. What if they don't, I just don't need the extra pressure. I am staying away from clothes shopping until my first 30 is over. This won't be my only 30, I'm a pretty big girl and I have lots of "unhealthy luggage" to get rid of. Next weekend (day 13) we are going to a birthday party. I have already told the hostess that I will bringing my own food for my husband and I. We won't be having cake. Has anyone else noticed, there are more food commercials on TV and twice as many on facebook - good gravy! (oh geesh, see what I did there, no wonder my butt is the size of a small town in northern Rhode Island) Anyway, I made it through my first holiday, no cheating. My husband and I did stayed home, did some crafting and ate pretty good. **still having these blazing hot flashes so I am upping my coconut oil**
Jager07
Dance your heart out! You deserve it! Great job on planning ahead for an upcoming event and how to succeed without it being weird. Thank you for the tip on the mayo....going to spice up the jar I made last week.
TinaH2016
Wow, it's day 10. I am 1/3 through my first journey with Whole30. It has not been a love fest lately but then again all relationships have their issues don't they. Last night, felt like I was at the beginning of leg cramps. Drinking more water today and maybe add a tad more salt. Sounds like I should go to the beach instead of work (I wonder if my boss would notice?) Last night, the hubby and I were discussing cheese. This is not a usual conversation for us but it was one that we had none the less. He misses his old friend. Although they never met secretly, he would enthusiastically indulge in this kinship as often as possible, everyday if possible. Good thing I am not the jealous type! I am finding that I am not really hungry, forcing myself to eat some meals because I want to keep my nutrition up (rocky part of the relationship) Keeping my eye on the prize! TinaH2016
Day 11, kind of down in the dumps today, not sure why. Not interested in food but know I have to eat. Still staying true to the program, not submitting to the wants of cheese, ice cream, burgers or pizza. I know this is the time when people will quit, which I know I won't do - but I am in the phase of why can't I see some of the good now please. The night sweats SUCK so I am no sleeping very well, in turn is making me tired. Could someone please just bottle the tiger's blood feeling and let me ingest that? you know, when you type it all out - it really looks like whining. NoMoreCrunchyCravings
you know, when you type it all out - it really looks like whining. Yeah, but that's why this forum is here-- so that we can listen to you whining so your family/friends/coworkers don't necessarily have to! They will just get to see the amazing foods you're preparing and eating, and will (hopefully) notice how your energy and attitude and body is changing!
