Dcpink
I am headed home from the gym--ran 4 miles and did squats. My question is about whether I should eat. I haven't been hungry since my lunch of sweet potato, ground beef, spinach, egg and avo. My stomach was so bloated I just haven't been hungry. I'm still not hungry and it's 10pm. Do I just skip eating or am I supposed to eat? My ultimate goals are energy and weight loss.
Karen_Suep
Yes. Eat after workouts. Lean protein and maybe a starchy carb

Ya, that's not good... energy comes from fuel... weightloss comes when your body feels comfortable that you're going to feed it sufficient food to fuel it... if it's scared that no food is incoming (like today after lunch), it's going to start slowing down metabolism, digestion etc... to conserve energy... you'll feel tired, lethargic and unwell. I'm sorry you were feeling bloated, lets see if we can pinpoint why so that this doesn't happen again. Go ahead and list the last two or three days of what you've been eating and we can see if anything stands out to cause bloat... often it's raw veggies, sparkling water, nuts and nut butters... You definitely need to eat and yes, after a workout, for maximum recovery, lean protein and starchy carb is what you want.
Dcpink
Oh I appreciate that! I actually tried to make myself eat when I got home but still felt so bloated and full, I couldn't even force it. Yesterday I had: B (9:30am)-- 2 eggs, avocado, banana, coffee with coconut cream L-(2:00pm) salmon, broccoli, salad w/spinach, onion, avo and tessamae cracked pepper dressing, 1/2 sweet potato with cinnamon Similar scenario--couldn't make myself eat before leaving for an event in someone's home at 7pm, but by the time I got home at 10pm, I was starving. I had ground beef cooked with spinach, onion, diced tomatoes, a banana, walnuts Today: B (10:00am) coffee with coconut milk, 2 egg omelet with spinach, onion, guacamole, banana L (3:00pm) large plate of fruit (strawberries, cantaloupe, watermelon, grapes) 2 egg omelet with ground beef, onions, avocado, 1/2 sweet potato Felt bloated, gassy and uncomfortable the rest of the evening. Tried to make myself eat before/after gym, but couldn't do it. I LOVE sweet potatoes but I worry they may be causing me to feel this way. I also cook with lots of garlic.... Regardless, I want to lose weight and have freedom from the obsession of calorie counting and fat fearing, but I'm just not having much success. Tomorrow is day 30 and my clothes are still tight. You're eating a lot of FODMAPS - they will definitely cause bloating if you're sensitive to them - I've highlighted the high FODMAP foods you've eaten over the last few days just so as you can see the volume, and yes, sweet potatoes are one of the culprits.... Some of those foods are okay when eaten in moderation, but once the gut is inflamed the only way to resolve that is to remove ALL high FODMAP foods for a week or so and then gradually reintroduce them - everyone's tolerance level is different and you'll probably find that you're fine to eat a small amount of a lot of the biggest offenders just so long as you don't do overkill.... >This is a really good article on FODMAPs with a great traffic light system list of what you should & shouldn't eat< Hope this helps. Moderators Tom Denham Posted May 30, 2016 Moderators Share Posted May 30, 2016 Your progress might be much better if you followed the meal planning template carefully with a few extras - Don't drink coffee before you finish your meal, stop eating nuts (and seeds) completely. Following the plan carefully would mean you would stop eating so much fruit and you would eat a pre- and post-workout meal without question. Further, you would eat your post-workout meal immediately after completing exercise, not after you drive home. These changes might seem minor or inconsequential to you, but they are important. http://whole30.com/downloads/whole30-meal-planning.pdf
Dcpink
Thank you!! I'll implement these changes--definitely cutting back on my FODMAPS.
