Gave up coffee, now super tired

Recommended Posts

One more question,

I have given up coffee, and while I have noticed some good results I am so exhausted. I think this may be because I have had to eliminate nightshades, as well as several other kinds of veggies, and my carbs are very low. Could low carbs be accounting for my exhaustion? Would you recommend adding sweet potatoes in?

Thanks!

Sweet potatoes are a great starchy vegetable and are not nightshades, so they are definitely an option. Other options are any root vegetables like turnips, beets, rutabagas, or carrots, or winter squashes like butternut, acorn, or spaghetti squash. Most people feel best with at least one fist-sized serving a day, but you can try having more if you need to. Be sure you have other veggies as well, variety is good.

How much coffee were you drinking before, and how many days have you been off it now? It can take a few days to adjust. Also, make sure you are getting good sleep ... many people use coffee as a sleep crutch and then when it's gone and sleep hasn't improved, there's a noticeable gap.

It's been a week and a half, and I consumed a great deal before (2 pots, 3? I work from home half time, so it was pretty bad.)

Yes, the first few days were TERRIBLE, but then I felt fine, until a few days ago, when I felt absolutely exhausted for a few days. I get lots of sleep, so I don't think that's it.

I'm pretty sure I need some carbs in there, so I'll get some sweet potatoes and spaghetti squash (which I totally forgot about, how did I do that?) tomorrow. Thank you everyone for your advice!

Please also make sure you are drinking enough water.  We recommend half an ounce per pound of body weight...so a 180# person would need at least 90 ounces of water each day.  As you were used to drinking a lot of fluids via coffee, it is critical that you replace that with water.  Dehydration will cause exhaustion, for sure!

You do not need to give up coffee completely just do not add milk or sugar products and limit it to one cup a day. Several people have used the nutpod non dairy creamers of coconut milk and you could too.

You don't have to limit coffee to one cup. That's your choice.

I didn't give it up because of sugar or creamers; I drink it black already. I just had some concerns.

Anyway, as it happens, once I got past a few days I was fine! Haven't had it for over a month now, and I don't miss it. Well, maybe the occasional Americano :) But perhaps I'll have one when I want to, and not just because I have it every morning!
