Tess21
Day 1. I'm very sleepy tired. This isn't new. I'm looking forward to feeling awake, alert, and pain-free soon. I'd like to say I'm excited about Whole30, but I'm more anxious that it won't work for me. I've tried many options over 34 years dealing with psoriasis. Some were effective, some weren't, and some worked for awhile until they didn't. I suppose I'm worried too if "I'm doing this right?" I have a huge perfectionist/procrastinator mentality. I even set my start date back 1 week to fully prepare and I still felt rushed. On the bright side, I know what's for lunch and dinner and both are prepped! Staggolee41
I can't say I identify with having psoriasis or psoriatic arthritis, but days 1-2 were the hardest for me. Today is probably the best I've felt overall since I started (day 8 for me). Good luck! There's lots of support to be had on these forums, so if you need encouragement, reach out! HollieG
I started today too I've done a clean eating challenge previously that was very similar to Whole 30 and the first few days were the worst. Just be sure to balance out your meals and get enough calories and nutrients for the day. I've been finding the forums helpful as well. I'm seeing more and more people starting up this week
Tess21
Thanks to you both on the encouragement! I'm on Day 3 and tired of garlic, in a good way. The meals (I'm near-religiously following the first week plan from the book) are delicious. The portions are generous although today I've actually felt hungry. I don't have any compliant snacks so I didn't eat anything. Any snack recommends?
Staggolee41
The plan discourages snacking... it does take some time to adjust, but if you feel that you are really hungry between meals, you may need to up the fat in the meals. One of the mods helped me understand how to add enough fat - don't count what you cook with, and don't count the fat in your protein. If you desperately need a snack, a closed handful of almonds is a good choice. Just don't go past the first handful - it's too easy to go overboard on them! In a pinch with no other compliant food around, yes, but they are an imbalanced fat, can be really hard on the digestion and it's often hard to stop once you start. Better options for mini meals while you're getting portions dialed in is protein and fat or protein and veg (or ideally all three), so think hardboiled egg and some snow peas, tuna, mayo and peppers to dip, olives and some cooked chicken etc... fruit on it's own, nuts on their own (incl nut butter) or fruit and nuts combined on their own are not the direction we hope you take in this 30 days. They can mess with your hormones, your sugar dragon and your satiety signals... go for actual food to eat instead of 'snacks'
Tess21
Thanks Staggolee41 on the fat ratio. I thought I might be using too much because I'm about 1/2 through a jar of ghee! I use a measuring spoon so I'm not overdoing the recipe amounts.
Staggolee41
Ahh, my bad on the almonds - I remembered someone said they were okay as long as you didn't exceed that portion, but I was wrong. No problem! SugarcubeOD is actually the one who helped me with the fat part.
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted June 30, 2016 Moderators Share Posted June 30, 2016 They ARE okay as a food that you eat along with meals (on a salad for instance) but not the best bet for 'snacking' You weren't wrong, if someone wanted to eat a handful of nuts every day, they would still be Whole30 (assuming compliance) but it's these recommendations we make that really hold the power of the program
IsabellaJ
Hi everyone, I also started on June 27. This is my second round, completed my first round last week (celebrated our wedding anniversary at the weekend, which did involve a few paleo but non-Whole 30 treats) I have an automimmue (hashimotos), and find whole 30/paleo/aip style of eating really helps, so hopefully it will help you too Tess 21 I love a big handful of olives as a fat with my meal to help fill me up, and of course lots and lots of veg! I have always had a big appetite, so do eat a huge amount of veg! I am in Australia, so it's now D4 .. and finding it quite straightforward this time around. Although first round did have a few ups and downs over the 30 days so I expect this time will be no different. On my first round I had bad headaches around day 4. It definitely helps that my husband is on board with this way of eating (although he does go off W30 when he is out with his mates, at least at home he doesn't complain (much!) about our meals and no alcohol!). How is everyone else doing?
Whitneydeann
It's encouraging to me to see people talk about this helping with autoimmune disorders. I'm in the planning stage, starting this weekend, and I'm hoping this will help with my psoriatic arthritis. I hate my biologic and I want to be med free! Tess21
IsabellaJ - thank you for the olive recommendation! Very good idea. I'm glad that Whole30 helps your autoimmune; I'm hoping to see relief from mine, however, I do not wish to go AIP. I'm doing the first 30 days as originally directed and will augment if I do not see relief. As of day 4, my skin is looking a wee less red, so perhaps I'm on the right path. My joints are not pain free yet and that is what concerns me most. Whitneydeann - I've taken biologic drugs for psoriatic arthritis and they work for a time and then quit. I'm not sure if all autoimmune suffers experience drugs ceasing to be effective, but in my experience it seems like my body just burns right through them. My body is a volcano. IsabellaJ
Good work Tess21 .. less redness in just a few days is awesome.. I suffer with some redness on my cheeks/forehead .. and that has cleared right up. One of my NSVs from round 1 was better skin, I had several people comment that my skin was glowing! I have hashimotos and I get morning joint pain in my hands as part of that, but eating whole 30 has eliminated that so hopefully you see some relief over the coming days and weeks How are your meals going Tess21? Are you feeling full between meals? During the first week I did snack from time to time with apple/cashews, just to get me through the headaches and cravings. And then in week 2 felt less need for the snack, and week 3 I had zero appetite even for meals lol! Good luck WhitneyDeann .. planning is crucial for me, so that's a great start to spend some time planning! My other tip is to cook in bulk as much as possible . .double the dinner and you can have leftovers for lunch or freeze. Makes it so much easier! We love our Sunday roast each week as it makes for a delicious lunch on Monday too!
Tess21
IsabellaJ - meals are going well. There have only been a few times this first week I felt hungry. Truth be told, I actually quit smoking too about 3 weeks before I began Whole30, so I was pretty used to knowing when my body craved something versus wanted food. I think if the hunger happens again I'll opt for water. I could drink more anyway. I too have to plan my meals. I'm struggling a bit on this week's menu somewhat as Monday is a holiday. We are going to visit relatives and need to take our meal with us. My husband, who is doing the challenge with me, and I decided to spend time with family and not place the emphasis on food as the book suggests. The hiccup comes with that night being a perfect opportunity to make a bulk meal is now not an option. It rather throws off the whole week! I don't want to speak too soon, but I think the pain volume in my arthritis is lowering. All 3 areas I currently have major pain feel some reduction in inflammation.
