Got up the nerve, I'm doing it

Hi there.  I'm Meg. So, I'm gonna do this Whole30 thing starting this coming week.  The book and some supplies should be delivered today (thanks Amazon), and I'll be having ingredients delivered tomorrow.  That gives me the weekend to do prep work and any cooking of stuff to do during the week.

I see my two biggest challenges as A) My significant other isn't doing this, so there's still groceries and meal planning for him as well and B) Making sure I have breakfasts that are ready to go to work, as I get up at 5am and am out the door at 5:20.  I don't have time to cook or anything in the mornings and I'm not getting up any earlier. :)  I'm also hoping it may have an effect on my fibromyalgia.  Extremely little else has.

The tipping point on the website that sold me was the "It's not hard" paragraph.  It says beating cancer is hard, changing how you eat isn't.  My sister lost her fight with breast cancer this past October.  If she could still smile at me through all the pain and chemicals and cr@p, changing how I eat is nothing.

Hooray! Welcome, Meg!

A few comments on your post -

  • The book has a lot to say before you go into it - read it! This was helpful for me in adding perspective.
  • My significant other is also not doing the Whole30, but he has enjoyed (most of) the dinners I've made thus far, many of which have been from the book.
  • The spinach frittata in the book is great to prep ahead of time and slice up into portions for each day, so that should help with the limited time, but the moderators will tell you it's important to eat breakfast within an hour of waking up. I struggle with this because I'm in the habit of eating breakfast at my desk right after I get to work.

Anyway, congratulations on making the choice!

I second the idea of making a frittata or omelette or something the night before (larger portion when cooking to dole out at least a few days at a time in ziptop baggies or travel containers). I often make a giant pan of scrambled eggs (like 9-12) and dole it out for three or four days into plastic dishes, then add assorted veggies, potatoes, olives, etc. and just grab one to pack with my lunch each day (which I also make many of in advance :D ).

My partner isn't doing this either-- I did a whole 30 in May and he wasn't interested. But I lost weight, felt amazing, had lots of energy and looked "brighter" somehow. And he noticed all of that. Now that I'm doing another, I asked if he'd join me and again he said that he wasn't interested. I just shrugged my shoulders and thought "oh well, he's the one who's losing out on the good feelings".

Good luck! You can definitely do this....take it one meal at a time! It can be a challenge when others in the house aren't doing the Whole30 with you, but I find having meal items prepped and ready to go helps a lot.

I'm starting tomorrow July 1st with my 1st Whole30. I agree with you that the "It's not hard" paragraph is what captured my interest as well. I love the tough love that this program has. I am hoping the Whole30 will help with my joint pain. However, I just got back from vacation last night and have not done any prep work. Early morning grocery shopping for me! Haha

Hi

I'm jumping into my second W30 tomorrow. Started my first on March 14 and completed 60+ days then carefully planned reintro's. Then went wildly off track and I've regained 6lbs, brain fog, lethargy, etc, etc.

I envy and admire those who are able to moderate their food choices without the strict rules of W30 because sadly, I have no such self control.

re: breakfast in a rush, not sure if link below will work but the recipe is one of my favorites. Soup for breakfast is also great. I'm looking forward to reading about your W30 journeys.
