Busymomma13
It was my hubby's birthday yesterday. We went out to a nice restaurant and split a 12 oz New York steak dinner. I had half a salad with no dressing (got a crumb of a crouton but did my best to spit it out), tried one bite if the sweet potatoes fries, but could tell they were fried in a off plan oil, so I didn't eat those. Then I ate the half steak, which was amazingly delicious. Today started out with very soft stools (I have had soft stools since week two, normally I am now in the constipated side). As today perused I have had intestinal noises (bubbles and gurgles), and this progressed to our yellow liquid stools (sorry if TMI). Now I am wiped out, after six days is amazing tiger blood, now I feel nasty, grumpy, and miserable. I'm thinking this is a response to some spice on that steak, any thoughts? When will it end? Should I take an anti diarrhea med?
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted July 2, 2016 Moderators Share Posted July 2, 2016 If you need the anti diarrhea med, take it. You should start feeling better soon, probably. Stick to bland, easily digestible foods until you feel better -- broth, plain grilled chicken, mashed potato or sweet potato for instance. If your stomach still feels upset, sometimes peppermint tea can help calm things down. Be sure you drink plenty of liquids so you don't end up dehydrated. Did you ask what oils the steak was cooked in and whether butter was added to it? Dairy causes digestive issues for lots of people, so if you didn't specify no butter on the steak, that would be my first thought, though it could certainly be something else like cooking oils or ingredients in the spices. If you want to know for sure, call the restaurant during a non-busy time and ask about it. The sweet potato fries wouldn't have been compliant regardless of the oil they were cooked in, as commercially prepared fries and chips are specifically not allowed -- see the Can I Have list for more on that. Moderators ShannonM816 Posted July 2, 2016 Moderators Share Posted July 2, 2016 So do I have to restart my 30 days??? Read this article and decide for yourself what you should do. Keep in mind that your body doesn't know the difference between something you consumed on purpose and something you consumed on accident. If you consumed something that wasn't compliant, you've restarted the count to get to 30 days of leaving out non-compliant foods in order to do reintroductions whether you intended to or not. The stall had grill marks as though it was grilled on a real grill.... With steaks on a grill in a restaurant, they could still have brushed oil on the grill or the steak to keep it from sticking, but even more likely is that unless you specifically told them not to, many places will put melted butter over the cooked steak before serving. Busymomma13
I am on day 26. Somehow I missed the memo on bacon. I've had about three breakfasts each week that each included about two slices of bacon, expensive Trader Joe's bacon, but not sugar free bacon. I just was not aware I've experienced compete freedom from food cravings, I've gone down a size in pants, have incredible energy, I'm sleeping so much better, my blood pressure is down, I am no longer taking omeprezole, and have had abundant reduction in my arthritis pain. I was already gluten and almost completely sugar free (probably had some forms of hidden sugars) for two months before starting Whole 30 How badly have I messed up? Is this a do over, or will I still be able to finish and go through the reintroduction phase? Right now my plan is to only attempt to reintroduce dairy cheese, peanuts and nightshade, but doing so according to the reintroduction schedule. Busymomma13
Man, that is rough. I also just realized that the"good, expensive" Trader Joe's bacon I've been eating has sugar in our, somehow I missed the memo on bacon. So, I'm going to sleep on it, but if I had to decide right now I would decided to start over, but I get to weigh myself and take new photos...does that sound fair? I got to thinking, I plan to make this long term...eat health to be healthy, so what's thirty days when you look at the big picture of eating this way for life....right? I think that sounds like a good plan. You have accomplished a great thing already, eating healthy for 26 days, so do celebrate that. You probably won't go through the worst of the first week symptoms this time, if that helps at all.
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted July 2, 2016 Moderators Share Posted July 2, 2016 It's definitely your choice whether you restart... there's an article at the bottom of my signature about whether you should restart or not... your decision.

If you continue for another 30 days, this time without the bacon, imagine how much more you can fail!
Dragonfly713
With all the positive stuff happening, you absolutely did not blow it! I made a couple of 'slips' during my 30 day journey, but in my mind, this way of eating is going to be long term, so the need to 'start over' really doesn't make sense. Congrats on all the wonderful benefits your body has received!
Moderators Tom Denham Posted July 2, 2016 Moderators Share Posted July 2, 2016 There is no memo about bacon. You are responsible for reading the ingredient label of everything you consume and noticing ingredients that are not allowed during a Whole30. You can't rely on anyone saying a particular brand is okay.
NoMoreCrunchyCravings
Restaurant steak is very well known to be so delicious because of the butter they cook it in. Lots of times they'll start it off with a good hot sear in a pan of butter, then finish it off in the oven or on a grill to get those beautiful black marks on both sides. I second the recommendation to call the restaurant during a non-busy time if you'd like to know. But if not, and your symptoms resolve, I'd just chalk it up to not asking all the questions that were really needed to know you were getting a Whole 30 dinner out, and move on being more careful to ask in the future. Busymomma13
Thanks for the encouragement. Most of you really made my day. Tom, I hope you meant well, but your reply just wasn't nice. I have been reading labels, just hadn't with bacon. I didn't take anyone's words for it, I just hadn't thought about it. The memo I was talking about was the bacon manifesto, so there. My new plan is to keep eating as clean as possible and have my new official start day on Tuesday (I'm going camping as part of a huge celebration and went have completed control over every ingredient, but will make the best choices and bring my own foods to fill in the gaps). Busymomma13
Here is a more detailed plan, which I posted in FB today: Here are the before and after photos of my Whole 26.... No, that isn't a typo. More on that in a sec. So, I lost 6 pounds and one pant size (the jeans I wore in the photo were uncomfortably, "this is too painful to wear", tight at the start, now I can wear them comfortably all day long). So, why am I starting over? I need a do over. I just realized that I have been eating bacon with sugar all this time, and that my omega 3 Barlean's Swirl has erythritol in it, plus other here and there whoopsies. I could just finish as is, but I really feel I need to take what I have learned and try again and do it right, do it better, including better before and after photos and measurements this time around. Here is the only before photo I have and an after photo to match. But better still than weight and photos, I have gained energy and lost unending fatigue, gained control over my cravings and lost high blood pressure, gained a better understanding of myself and lost chronic pain, and I have gained a better awareness of hidden sugars/artificial sweeteners and lost the "I can't do this, there is nothing to eat" mentality!
