carny326
I've started whole30 for the first time today. I've got a number a chronic issues that I'm hoping will improve with the help of this program. Day 1 has been kind of rough... I feel like I've eaten a TON of food today (all delicious BTW) way more than I eat in a typical day, but I have felt like I've been starving all day long... Started the day with a hardy helping of nut/banana blueberry mash, a couple of hours later I had a hard boiled egg, a few hours later I had a hardy meal of chilly with a sweet potato, a couple of hours later I ate a serving of watermelon, cantaloupe, bell peppers w/tomatillo guac dip, and pickles. Then for dinner I had a chicken salad with various veggies, about a pound of chicken and some seasoning. I scarfed it down like I hadn't eaten in days. And I'm sitting here a couple of hours later and wanting a snack!! Is this normal? I'm used to a fairly high carb diet (damn the sugar dragon).. .is this just happening because I want sugar and carbs or what?
LiveLifeStrongWithNicole
Congrats on your first day! If you are really hungry, you might want to think about increasing your healthy fats. I noticed a few of your meals didn't include a healthy fat. I notice when I try to skimp on my healthy fats I tend get hungry quicker in between meals and I never feel fully satisfied. jmcbn
... Started the day with a hardy helping of nut/banana blueberry mash... Hey there & welcome to Whole30 I'm guessing this is why you've been so hungry all day. When we start the day with a fruit heavy meal having fasted overnight it impacts your blood sugar and can leave you hungrier MUCH sooner than had you started the day with protein & fat. Not only that, but because fruit is much less satiating you then find yourself playing nutritional catch up all day... Have you seen the recommended meal template? Try building each of your meals to match it, x3 times a day, 4-5hrs apart, the first within an hour of wakening and you should feel much better. And until you get to a place where you know how much food you'll need to eat to get to that 4-5hr window if you need to snack try making it a mini meal of protein, fat & veg (or at least two of the three food groups with protein & fat being your best option) and then increase the size of your meals a little going forward. Fruit eaten on it's own as a snack will feed your sugar dragon, cause a spike in blood sugar (swiftly followed by a trough) and not help with your cravings.... If you're used to a carb heavy diet it can take a few days to adjust but hang in there, ensure you're drinking adequate water (half your body weight in ounces daily) and don;t forget to salt your food. Hope this helps.
carny326
Hi guys! Thanks for the feedback and encouragement. The breakfast is actually more nut heavy than fruit heavy. It's a blend of primarily cashews, almonds and pecans, with a banana for texture and topped with fruit for flavor. Day 2 is going a bit better, I had a bigger bowl of my breakfast than I did yesterday, and drank more water it's been about 3.5 hours and I'm not yet hungry. I re-read my whole30 book last night, and realized I was using fruit as a sugar craving substitute (which I guess you're not supposed to do). So I'll have to back down on my fruit intake. But I'll definitely look into adding more healthy fats, I was figuring the protein would be a apt at making me feel full but I guess not! Thanks again for the advice
jmcbn
Hi - sorry to chirp in again here but nuts are actually a fat source for Whole30 purposes, not a protein, and an inferior fat source at that due to their poor omega 3:6 ratios. We'd recommened you eat at most a closed handful, every other day, (and limit any other nut products such as milk or butter) or you'll undoubtedly suffer with digestive issues... Glad to hear day 2 is going better for you
