Starting July 10th!

Hi everyone, I'm starting the Whole 30 program on Sunday, 10th July - is anyone else starting on that day as well by any chance?

To give myself a bit of a push, I've been slowly tapering the 'banned' foods out of my diet. Started with sodas, then coffees with milk, then grains, legumes, and finally (reluctantly) sugar. I'm hoping this will result in a slightly more tolerable set of withdrawal symptoms which I feel pretty confident I will experience.

I'm glad this forum is here, too. I'm sure I'll be coming here a lot for recipe inspiration and other kinds of motivation!

Hi! Sunday the 10th is going to be my day 1 also!

Hopefully your tapering will help the side effects... I've been trying to lower my sugar, since its the main one that worries me. I have such a sweet tooth. Our local farmers market is Sat so will pick up nice fresh vegies that day as well as hopefully getting some food prep done (have to finalise a meal plan between now and then!) Also writing up some 'emergency' plans and such to try and help myself succeed.

It was such a surprise how many things in my pantry weren't compliant... like canned tomatoes, coconut milks, canned beets etc, that all had added nastiest or sugar.

I'm glad to find someone else starting the same day.

Hi there! I am also starting on Sunday, July 10th.

I have also been cutting some things out of my diet in preparation for this. I'm most worried about not having my morning Diet Coke! I know that stuff is horrible for me, but I love it.

I'm glad to know other people are starting on the same day I am! We can do this!

Hi Kirby, I'm glad we're starting on the same day too!

I know what you mean about all the non-compliant stuff - I got kind of miffed at the fact that my jar of pickles had high fructose corn syrup - in pickles!!

One thing I've noticed for myself is that night-time is dangerous territory, where boredom and hunger are sometimes indistinguishable from one another. So I'm definitely going to be doing food prep over today and tomorrow. I'm keeping a journal these days, and use them to simultaneously plan meals and then track what food I'm eating daily (I'll post a photo of it on my Whole30 log, it may be a useful tool for you as well)

Emergency plans are an excellent idea!

Hi susejh! Maybe you, Kirby Ellen and I can all be buddies since we're all starting on the same day!

I also got myself hooked on diet coke over the past few months - I've been replacing it with club soda/sparkling water over time, which has helped me a lot! I still haven't shaken the cravings though, so I reckon I may need to start swapping the club sodas for green teas soon...

I'm even more excited to get started now! Let's do this  B)

Hello ladies! I am also starting Sunday and would love to join you all on the journey for support :D. I have a terrible sweet tooth and recently just had a baby and am breastfeeding. I am trying to eat better and provide her with the best start possible. Also, te weight loss and getting rid of my dependence on dessert is something I'm really looking forward to as well. I am coupling this with working out 6 days a week. Excited to start!

Hi Wilk, great that's four of us starting tomorrow!

Congratulations on your baby!

I've asked all my family members to take whatever chocolate we have in the house and either get rid of it or put it in their bedrooms where I can't get to them...I know that I would just creep into the kitchen and gorge myself at night if I know it's there! I think that was a wise move - yesterday I had really bad cravings at night!

All the best - let's do this!!

Hi ladies  :)

My name is Emily & I am starting my first whole 30 on Sunday as well!! I've been paleo since May but I just moved and am living alone with too much free time. Unfortunately, that has translated to too many paleo sweets. It's time to really focus on eating 3 large nutritious meals!

I'm excited!

Hi there - I'm starting today, too!  Just drinking my coconut milk latte (undecided on that) :)  I have struggled with autoimmune issues and they have flared back up and am looking to get them back under control.  I have lots of food sensitivities from that so I'm ready to do some work and get healthy!  Nice to meet all of you!

Hello Paleotype1, jesslensherr, and desertsun! How is everyone's first day going? I am hungry but I'll learn my meal sizing within the coming days. Trying not to snack between meals. Desertsun, my sister in law also had an autoimmune disease and will be working through her diet as well since last time she did it she had huge success. Good luck to everyone and happy to have so many of us for support!

Good morning to day 2!  How'd Day one go for everyone? I didn't find it too difficult (the joys of the first day!).  I did have some sugar cravings but they were very manageable.  I made my latte with canned coconut milk and, ummmmm, am drinking my coffee black today  :D.  That didn't do it for me (and made me nauseous).  I have a little less joint pain and swelling this am, didn't take any advil yesterday (like often) and my stomach is a tiny bit flatter today.  So far so good.

Breakfast will be ground turkey with steamed broccoli all mixed in topped with 1/2 an avocado.  What are you guys eating for breakfast?

Love to hear your stories!

Hey guys, I am starting today July 11 but close enough. I am starting for the third time, I was successful on the first but not the second and I need to get my eating patterns under control cause I have blown up in size. I would love to have support and someone to talk about this. Also would love recipe tips.

My breakfast was paleo muffins consisting of breakfast sausage, bell peppers and eggs. I highly recommend.

Happy Monday

Hiya Emily, welcome aboard! I'm curious to see how much of a difference going on the Whole 30 will be for you, seeing as you would've been mostly compliant (ingredients-wise at least)... I'm already finishing up day two over here but I'm guessing with the time zone, you guys may only be starting your day now.

Best of luck!

Hi Jessie! I tried to respond earlier, but I think my message didn't get through... I'm also addicted to sugar (in the form of chocolate and jellybeans)!  How was your first day? I hope it went smoothly! xx

Hi DS - congrats on getting through 1/30 of the journey so far haha! I've just had my last meal of day 2 (it's almost 9 pm over here). Since I'm quite a few hours ahead of most of you guys, I will make sure to alert you all 'from the future' of any impending disasters, food-wise lol!

It's been a shockingly smooth two days, I guess cos I've prepped all my food and planned my meals for this week in advance, and made sure I was actually full at each meal! I decided to simplify my life and made one breakfast casserole last Saturday (sweet potato breakfast casserole from over here... http://www.fromthiskitchentable.com/sweet-potato-breakfast-casserole/the photos are not super glossy and appealing but it tastes great!) and will just be helping myself to one serving every day this working week, and then on the weekends will take it easy with the Diner's breakfast from the Whole30 book.

I've been trying to notice any type of changes, but the only one that I feel is my throat feels a little bit scratchy or something - not quite sure how to describe it, but it kind of feels the same as when I've just gotten over the flu (not just starting one). I wonder if it's linked to the change in diet!

I can't wait to start noticing a flatter tummy! It's taking a lot of strength not to step on the scale. xx

And p.s. I LOVE Mel Joulwan's blog! I prefer her method of making mayonnaise to the one in the Whole30 book. I find when I use Mel's method it always comes out just right. And her advice is just so practical and helpful.

Hi Nichole! Welcome (back) aboard :D

DesertSun above mentioned Mel Joulwan's blog - meljoulwan.com which is so amazing.

Those breakfast muffins sounds really good, I think I'm going to try that! I'm having a sweet potato breakfast casserole all throughout the weekday mornings, but I feel like the muffins might take up less space in my fridge/freezer. I think i'm going to try and make those for my breakfasts on week 3.

For Week 2 I'm going to do this Italian Chicken Casserole - it sounds like a lunch/dinner type thing, but it actually came up when I googled 'whole 30 breakfast casserole'! And judging from the comments, it looks pretty yummy!

How do you feel about Middle Eastern food? I'm going to be posting some recipes for my favourite Persian and Arabic dishes as and when I make them (well, my mom will help me make them, lol!) - the first one will be seared chicken cooked with a saffron, almond and barberry 'sauce' - one of my absolute favourite dishes ever, and has always been whole30 compliant... as long as you replace the white rice for cauliflower rice!

Best of luck!

J717 (my last name is Johnson, too:) I have't tried making almond milk as I am allergic to tree nuts but I know others love it.  It can separate in coffee so I know folks who blend it is the blender with their coffee first.

I've got a bit of a headache going today...nothing bad but not surprising...but my energy is through the roof (don't tell me what is coming :)

I did something similar and made a huge batch of breakfast to last 3 days.  Heading to trader joe's in a bit to restock.  I have to fly tomorrow (I travel all the time and am committed to making this work).  Making Steak salads to have for lunch and dinner.  Figure I can eat it cold and dump the dressing on and shake it before i hit TSA:)  I think I can find a fridge at the office location of my meeting tomorrow.  Never a dull moment!

Share ANY AND ALL Recipes! :)  If you need a quick "oh no I don't know what to do" crockpot recipe here is one to try.  Put 4 chicken breasts in the crockpot, cover with 16 oz jar of approved chunky salsa, and 1/2 cup balsamic vinegar.  Cook 6 hours on low or 4 hours on high (low is better).  Shred and serve over cauliflower rice.

Hi Johnson, welcome to the 710s! Hahah. How was your first day?

I'm afraid I can't help you with the coffee conundrum :(. I've always drunk coffee black with no sugar... I once tried an almond milk latte in Dubai and thought it tasted really weird and not pleasant. I've never tried making my own almond milk, but my little cousin has done it, and she says it's not too hard. But people who describe it to me keep talking about using a cheesecloth. It's really distracting and my brain stops function at the mention of the word cheese (I LOVE cheese). JK!

Back to almond milk: people say it's not too difficult, but I think that it might be a) slightly expensive given the number of almonds that need to be used, and B) I think fresh almond milk only keeps for up to 3 or so days, so it might be too time-consuming in the long run.

If you do try it, though, please let us know how it goes! I'm curious to know.

Day 2 is done!  How are you all feeling?  I have been CRAZY thirsty all day and had too much energy.  I walked 20,000 steps without trying. Now it's 8:00 and I am not even tired at all.  THAT is crazy....

Don't think my tummy liked all the cauliflower rice I ate at lunch - just had a few chicken sausages from Trader Joe's for dinner (they are pretty tasty and convenient).

How about you?

SO on coffee..... I cant do coconut milk either. Its gross so I've been using unsweetened cashew milk. It looks compliant. I saw Melissa post something about compliant creamer a while back. I am going to try and find out what that is.
