Starting 14th july, the food revolution day

Hello from France,

I'm starting a new whole30 (already did 2 before) on july 14th (our national day), for a lot of reasons, but mainly to be in better shape and health for surgery in october. I hope I'm able to continue and do a whole 60 ! But let's begin small :)

Good luck everyone !

Hello from Australia! I too am starting today.. I ahem also done it twice and it's time for a reset. It is mid winter here and so i am also taking a months membership at a local gym to look after my excursus needs, so i am feeling stiff and sore!! I would love some motivation and support if you'd like some too? Good luck :) Sarah

Of course, an antipode support would be much welcome !

My first day was already hard. Paris is a city full of temptations when the weather is fine. When I took the rabbit for a walk during the afternoon many people were enjoying a good meal or a glass of wine... :D

Anyway, I stuck to the program.

How about you ? I hope winter is not too cold down there !

:)

I began my first Whole30 on Monday, so technically not the 14th, but very close. I've been taking it VERY easy, resting all week (the sugar detox was terrible the first 2 days! Migraines and horrible body aches). Plan to start exercising on Monday. I'm on vacation all summer here in NJ (US) so I have the luxury of taking my time with this. I am having some trouble differentiating this experience from my previous Atkins experiences, which had always gone well but suddenly stopped working :(  So far I'm feeling much better and just know that will continue as I add in exercise.  I have high hopes, and about 30 pounds to lose, so I hope I'm not being overly optimistic?

Hi Bonnielv,

How lovely, I  can imagine walking the rabbit through Paris!!  I took my children 3 years ago and the food and wine is so very tempting.. bakeries at every corner!! I also have celiac, so at lest i am used to not having bakery food now. I don't have any aches or symptoms yet. I had a salmon, garlic, red cabbage and coriander stir fry for dinner, 3 eggs with pumpkin and kale for breakfast and now just some wallaby fillet with baked veggies. I know that if i start to loose weight too fast i get terrible aches and pains.. so I'm keeping up the amounts! It has been very cold.. snow and lot's of wind.. but exercise is helping. Enjoy the Summer.. i wish i was there!!

Hello Allyz,

sorry to hear that you are having a tough time of it, but glad to hear you are taking it easy, and how lovely to be having the holiday time.. such an opportunity to make some lasting changes.  :) As I understand it Atkins focusses on the protein and fat and doesn't really put so much emphasis on veggies. If you are going to keep nourishing your body and giving it the best nutrition, you need to really focus on veggies and preferably some leafy greens and coloured veg at every meal. Atkins doesn't focus on inflammatory foods, but just protein so I remember eating lot's of cheese! The Whole 30 really focusses on removing foods that might be causing inflammation in your body. I think that this way of eating naturally brings you to your natural weight point if you continue and don

t lapse and remember to eat a lot!! Don't think it is calorie controlled.. you need to feel full and satisfied rather than the crash and burn roller coaster of the carb/sugar diet. I think 30 pounds in 30 days is too much to ask of your body. I would hate for you to be disappointed and you could cause some damage if you don't eat enough and also you could read about leptin and why starvation isn't helpful for weight loss. .. if you add in an exercise plan make sure its something you can continue.. Create habits rather than think of it as quick solution. I am carrying about 9 pounds more than usual, I don't know if I will loose them, but based on previous experience, it is possible. I am personally focussing on building muscle bulk and energy and wellbeing as I need to increase my bone density and have been feeling very sluggish. Maybe if Bonnie above and I feel like continuing we could all do it together.. but as she says.. one day at a time :)

Hi there !

@ SassieM, what a huge breakfast !! :D Good for you. I always have trouble with eating on morning, but I found it easier with whole30. Tomatoes, eggs, almonds and a cup of tea is great to start the day. Usualy the typical breakfast here is café au lait croissant which is clearly forbidden. I remember also a cold winter in Australia (Melbourne, I staid there 1 year). I even went skying ! :)

@Allyz

I agree with SassieM about Atkins and making small changes which will have big effects instead of having great expectations from the begining. But 30 pounds in 30 days seems a lot ! I don't even know if it is healthy. I also have 30 pounds to lose but I aim the end of september. And if I lose 20 pounds, I will be very happy and continue after surgery (well, not immediatly after, but when the surgeon is ok).

Day 2 was great. I had a picnic with friends, but I brought my own tomato salad, with artichokes, onions, bell peper, and hard boiled egg. I also had an apple for dessert !

Hello guys , well day 4 is drawing in this hemisphere and I got up, had a walk up my beautiful mountain. I just love the fresh air and always feel fabulous afterward although it takes bit of motivating before hand! I had 3 eggs poached in a vegetable sauté of courgettes (zucchini), romaine broccoli, tomato, garlic and paprika with a big green salad. I think I am the only person I know who eats salad for breakfast, but it is kind of "Brunch" by the time I finish. I am so far feeling fabulous, but have had sugar demon moment yesterday. I ended up having some coconut sugar in a coffee yesterday and got terrible pain and bloating!! It was like an early reintroduction. So I guess I "broke" the rules but it really helped me to realise that sugar in any form is not my friend. I think I'll just give up coffee too, because I just don't like it black. I am substituting chai tea because I already like that black without sweetening.

@ Bonnielv .. My children are just returning in 2 hours from a week skiing with their Dad in Victoria, it can be very cold, but I think Paris can get a lot of snow some years too.  I have had many HelpX travellers come to stay with me from France, its such a great thing that the visa's are easy to get, we Love the French helpers because they always cook such yummy food and we get to practice our very bad French!!  Bon chance :)

Hello,

I just finished my 14th of july week end with a roasted fresh fish and tomato salad, and of course a slice of cantaloup melon !

So far, it went all quite well, but today I felt so tired, as if I had not slept in a week ! We went to the park (Parc de Sceaux), and it was so hot, I was kind of fuzzy and I had trouble walking after our lunch pause. I guess it is an effect of whole30 early days.

Yesterday I made gourgettes farcies (stuffed zucchini, I think) with provencal tomatoes. Even my fiancé was delighted ! I will definitely make some again.

http://www.dupainsurlaplanche.ch/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Courgettesfarcies.jpg

Today was also our shoping day. My fridge is stuffed with veggies and meet, but I have to do my own cooking for lunch because our company restaurant is not whole30 compliant at all. :D

@SassieM.

I loved this skying experience, because it was so different from our Alpes. We have pine trees here in Europe, and the blue montains are covered with eucalyptus !! Magic !

HelpX travellers are for farms, no ? Do you run a farm ?

Oh well done, that must have been hard, I remember how hot it can be in Paris at this time year, I hope you take it easy and get some rest.

I haven't been tired yet but it may come this week. Yesterday I did have a coffee at our wonderful farmers market where I got lots of meat and veggies too. Later I felt my tummy upset again and I had a bit of a headache. I tried their coconut milk but I suspect it had something else in it, maybe some kind of gum? I will ask them next week to show me the carton.

I cooked pork and fennel sausages made by a pig farmer on Bruny Island who only makes 10 packets a week - very special! I had courgette and broccoli simmered in a rich tomato and garlic herb sauce and instead of pasta put it on a bed of salad which wilted under the heat. It was pretty yummy and a good winter warmer. Your recipe looks very good, it will be good in summer when I have so many courgettes and some grow too big. I have a large garden, not a farm. HelpX can be for any kind of place, where as Wwoof is only on organic farms. My garden is in the winter now, but in a few months Ill have planted out lots of salad greens and cauliflower, broccoli, kale, cabbage then later we will have tomatoes, peppers and courgettes in the summer. I also have 10 chickens, so lot's of eggs which is great because I eat eggs for breakfast most mornings.

I lived in Switzerland for a couple of seasons in Grindelwald, working as a cook on a ski resort when i was younger. I remember the pine forests and the ski runs were so beautiful, but the snow gums here are so lovely too!

I hope your week goes well, I go back to work tomorrow and the children back to school, so i need to be super organised to make sure I have enough food for the day.  :D

@ Bonnielv

I felt very tired and fuzzy today, as well! Day 7 for me and I have to say I sort of "crashed" last night around dinnertime. I had great energy all day yesterday, but once I began to wind down, I experienced a terrible headache. Took a shower, some allergy meds, and went to sleep. I have to say I don't feel as if I ever woke up today!

I should clarify, to all, I don't expect to lose ALL 30 pounds in the 30 days! It's just my overall goal. I'd be happy to fit into my work clothes when school starts up again in September. :(

I'm actually quite inspired by eliminating all these inflammatory foods and then discovering which ones agree with me and which ones don't during reintroduction (let's just say that cheese and ice cream BETTER be agreeable!!!).

One question, (tmi alert) anyone else experiencing a change in bowel habits? I've been rushing to the bathroom all afternoon!

@SassieM

I am actually a bit concerned about eating enough calories. Salad and veggies don't make me feel that "satisfied" sensation at all. I know we aren't supposed to count calories, but I may take a stab at it through myfitnesspal just to ensure I'm eating enough. Basically, I'm eating 3 meals a day, with snacks of cherries or cashews if I'm feeling peckish.

Aside from eating when I'm hungry, and sticking to 3 meals a day, any suggestions on how to ensure I'm eating enough?

If you follow the meal template, you will be eating enough. That means for each meal, you'll have: 1-2 palm sized portions of protein, the length, width, and depth of your palm, or if eggs are your only protein, have as many whole eggs as you can hold in your hand, which is probably 3 or 4; 1-2 thumb sized portions of fat, or a heaping handful of olives or coconut flakes, or half to a whole avocado, or occasionally a small closed handful of nuts or seeds -- this is in addition to the fat you cook with as much of that stays in the pan; and fill the rest of the plate with vegetables, one cup bare minimum, aim for three cups at most meals.

Most people do well with a fist-sized serving of starchy vegetable each day. If you're active, you may want more, and people who are prone to depression or anxiety, and women who are nursing, pregnant, or in the week or so leading up to their period often need more.

Your meals should keep you satisfied for 4-5 hours. If they aren't, you probably need to increase the size. Don't be afraid of adding fat, it will help keep you full between meals.

You can always post your meals in the Troubleshooting section of the forum if you're not sure if you're on the right track.

@Allyz. I see you have had some support from Shannon above. My comments about salad and veggies were on top of the protein and fat. When comparing Atkins to The whole 30 as Atkins never really emphasised nutrition just eating fat and protein. My experience is that when i eat enough in each meal I get to a place where I am satisfied in between meals. It is only the sugar dragon that gets me, not actual hunger. This lasts for a while.. and I have to really be vigilant and learn to distinguish the two.  I had it just now infact!!  I ate a few slices of some lamb that was cooking in the slow cooker rather than fruit or anything sweet as that would just reinforce my craving. It does seem counter intuitive to eat more if your hope is to loose weight, but I assure you it works! I only had "Brunch" today, so that was why I was getting hungry mid afternoon, so that kinda of proves to me that it was hunger.

I sometimes add some cooked sweet potato, beetroot, pumpkin, parsnip or carrots for some extra sweetness/carb content in one meal a day, I sometimes have trouble sleeping so I make it the evening meal. I use coconut oil to cook and olive oil or hazelnut oil to dress salads, veggies and use a reasonable amount and also coconut cream in a hot spiced cacao drink or coffee for a winter warmer (unsweetened of course!!)  Reading the book or searching for forum topics like "hunger" or "craving" might help too :)

I'd love to have a big garden and grow my own food. I know it is a lot of work but my fiancé and I plan to buy a house with land in Bourgogne when we have enough money. His dream is to be self-sufficient, but my goal is to regain control on our consumption, and wallet (I'm the pragmatic/realistic one :D). I don't know why but fruits and veggies are so expensive here. I see you are pretty well surrounded with local and good food, and beautiful nature, very whole30 compatible. :)

I noticed the same thing with coffee. I read somewhere it is irritable for the gut (but it can also be the added "milk"), specially if you suffer from IBS. I even have a colleague who told me coffee makes him go to the toilets quasi instantly.

@Allyz

I had the same problem during my 1st whole30, and it was because I didn't eat enough. I added nuts, and ate more, and I felt better.

What worked for me was the meal template (Shannon's advice), and photos of whole30 meals on their official pinterest or instagram. You get there an idea of what to eat and in which quantity. And also lots of fancy recipes ideas ! :)

I have no doubt you will be slimmer by the begining of september if you follow the program.  :)

OK, so day 5 went all right despite a bit of angriness. I think I have a kill all things moment. :)

I hope it will end soon, because combined with 40°C (104°F) at work it is a explosive cocktail !

Cheers !

Hello girls !

How are you ? How are you doing with winter, Sassie ? And you with your portions, Allyz ?

Day #6 was a tough one ! the combination of kill all things and high temperatures is not good at all ! I was depressed all day long, and then, at 6PM, the kill all things disappeared, like that, pouf ! Suddenly, I didn't want to strangle and kick people for anything anymore. :)

So, day #7 is beginning. The thermometer is higher than ever, at 8AM and I barely slept this night because of the heat (and because someone listened to disney songs until 3AM, with all windows opened  <_< ).

Oh well, 7 days.. who hoo. Monday was just dreadful and Tuesday wasn't much better, so angry and irritable.. however I've just started to bleed, so I realise now that I had a double dose !! I had the "Kill all things" that usually have premenstrually and the day 5-6 irrits and I had a house full of children, mine and 3 others. :huh:  I had to offer chocolate and strawberries to my children last night and have big cuddles on the couch in front of a roaring fire. I has an unsweetened hot cacao with ginger, cinnamon and coconut cream. I really missed the honey, but it was still very warming.

I feel much calmer and happier today but I think I left my brain at home and made a big mistake at work. ( I work in an apothecary and I dispensed a 500ml bottle with one wrong ingredient.. a big waste :wacko:  . However I managed a Barrecode class tonight. I did 4 classes last week, so I hope to be feeling the benefits soon. Winter is OK, a little milder this week after last weeks storms and no power. The bulbs and chives are coming up in the garden which always makes me feel a sense of hope and I look forward to all the spring greens.

@ Bonnie, I really want to give up coffee but my resolve is not there in these few days. I don't enjoy it black but I am still having it. I also need to go to the bathroom sometimes immediately after drinking it and wonder if it makes my food intolerances worse. I did read one clinical trial that says that it increases the "leakiness" of the gut for a day after which would mean continually for those who drink it daily.  I don't have any at home so tomorrow is my last day at work for 4 days and I'm over my PMS.. so I will start on Friday. I might need some encouragement. I have made it public!!  :blink: It is so hard to sleep in the heat.. I sometimes put a wet sheet on me in hot climates to cool myself down. I hope your neighbours realise that they are dicing with danger to be playing disney songs all night with someone who wants to "kill all the things"!! Lets' hope they tone it down and you get some sleep.

Hello day #8

So, one week already ! I feel much better than the previous days (no stress or angriness, no 6 months pregnant belly). I still struggle with the no scale rule, though. :)

Last night was also a chalenging one, because it is still very hot, but they say temperatures are going down from now. I don't know if you have ever experienced that, but taking the packed metropolitain with everybody sweating is a disgusting nightmare.

Anyway, I made a "poulet basquaise" (which is also goos in winter). My fiancé loves that and with one entire chicken (1.5kg) we have enough for two days.

http://lamarmitedecaro.fr/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/img-poulet-basquaise.jpg

Usualy it goes with rice, but you can also use potato purée, or fresh pasta as a side dish. I prefer salad.

@SassieM

You went public with whole30 or with stopping coffee ?

I did not make my whole30 "coming out" for the moment. I think it is not in our culture here in Europe to announce something like that. In fact, it can do more harm than good. People would laugh or try to tempt you with uncompliant food and maybe bet on who will make you crack. You may tell very good friends, but even within family it is hard to make them understand. I think it is safer to do it quietely, and make nobody ask questions until they see the results (usualy after 20 pounds off, they get interested). I call it evangelization through example ! :D

I'm also a coffee "addict", and I managed to replace it with green tea for breakfast. And I realized that I wasn't addicted to the coffee itself, but to the event "drinking a coffee" or the moment of pleasure around it.

For example, I drink a coffe when I arrive at work with the colleagues, chat about the last gossips, terrible news, work problems, etc... There is only coffee but if there was gree tea, I would drink it. I also drink coffe when I go to the market on sunday morning. It is such a pleasure to sit and have a coffee in the sun, seing people shoping, watching what is in their baskets, etc. I just can't imagine going to the market without having a coffee after. Unfortunately, they serve a disgusting tea in bars in Paris.

Anyway, I think I will skip the morning coffee as much as I can and keep the sunday coffee because it is my little sunday pleasure ! :)

start of day #9 !!

Hello, so day #8 was OK, but I just had a terrible night, full of nightmares. I dreamt I was eating rice, and realizing it wasn't compliant... And also, other more terrible things (since the Paris attacks, I have nightmare about being trapped in a terror attack). Useless to say I'm not in a good mood or very awake this morning. :)

How are you doing guys ?

Day 11 :D  Most people i know realise that i am on this kind of diet most often because of all my intolerances. I try not to say much about it because it has been so hard for me and it's kind of boring to talk about food all the time and I really can't be bothered explaining myself. I usually just say.. "I feel so much more energy and health when I cut out certain things".  Bt it's really nice to be able to chat here because you understand. SO my going public was just to say I told you on the forum about giving up coffee!! I guess it helps me to be committed.  I do have the most dreadful headache today, I don't know if it's the coffee withdrawal or something else. Yes, for me it's also going to work and the Saturday and Sunday markets too! Although this weekend it was easier as we were snowed in and I couldn't get the car out and I had no coffee at home. I did have a cup of chai tea though.

It has been very cold and so much snow, so I was very happy to have a big container of slow cooked beef in the freezer for tonight after we went for a huge walk up the mountain in the snow! I had mine with pureed cauliflower. I really like it.. just steam the cauliflower until tender and then puree it with some salt and olive oil.. it's a little thinner than potato but really delicious. The children just had brown rice.

The chicken dish looks really good. I have several chickens and last Spring we had babies and one turned out to be a rooster. Well, a couple of weeks ago we took the big challenge to dispatch it ourselves with the help of a friend who knows how to do it very carefully and with out stressing the animal. We just can't get real organic grass fed chicken here, so I decided that if I was going to have chicken that we would have to take more responsibility. It was very hard to do, but now I have so much respect for the meat that I want to use every scrap and make something special.

Hello day 12 ! So far so good. I think I followed the rules constantly. Even through the week end. (I make non compliant food for my fiancé, which is always a bit of a challenge. For example, this week end I made a peach crustard or him, and had to watch him eat it :D.)

Unfortunately, my period came and it was a nightmare, as usual (horrible pain, vomit, etc.). The problem is they were not supposed to come because I'm on Decapeptyl for three months... I wonder if it is an effect of the program that my hormones don't want to back off. :)

Yes, Cutting out coffee gives headache. But after a few days, the headache disapears.

Must be hard to kill an animal you took care of... :( My cousin is raising pigs, and told me that it was hard killing any of his pigs, even is they are delicious.

Good luck with the snow !! :)

Hi guys !

I'm still on ! Yesterday was my feast day ! So I made a tiramisu for my fiancé (who brought me roses :wub: ), and we opened a bottle of cidre. But I had none of that... So sad... Instead I watched my zucchini, olives, and melon...

But today I have no regrets ! I was right not to give in.

I'm a bit worried because I don't think I'm losing weight, and it is a recommandation of the surgeon !

Tomorrow is our half way !! So happy  :D

Day #15 !!!

Just 15 more days ! I'm feeling great ! I love cooking more and more. For example yesterday, I completely improvised dinner and it was delicious (even my fiancé was not convinced at first and did like it at the end).

I'm more comfortable with doing non compliant food for the others, as I know I will not be tempted.

There is still one problem : I have a six-months pregnant belly...
