Hayfever gone Haywire ahhh!!!!!!!

I am still trying to figure out this whole forum scenerio but thought his may be a good way to ask. I am Stacy, hello! I am on day 7 of my first whole30. I have had hay fever throughout my life, allergy shots as a kid, allergy meds over the years. The last few years I would say my allergies were mild, having just a few periods of time where I needed Claratin. Over the years I have had the itchy throat/ears/lips etc. but I assumed it was more from the pesticides on the fruit rather than the fruit itself. I would say I have avoided cherries and peaches for this reason and it is hard to source organic ones. If someone asked me if I have allergies I would say occasional hayfever, nothing else. Over the last 2-3 days on the Whole30 my "hayfever" has been terrible. I was sneezing, had itchy ears and throat that were so bad last night I took kid's benadryl because that is all I had. That stuff will make you feel looped, let me tell you! This morning I am still suffering, I took a Claratin (I am not sure if this is Whole30 compliant but I was suffering). I think this is so strange because so many Whole30 followers find allergies improve quickly on the plan and because I am eating a larger volume of things that I don't normally eat much of.

For example: cashews, coconut (milk, shredded, oil), berries, some peach (have reacted before, the one I ate was grilled), avocado, eggs, almonds, kombucha

I strongly suspect cashew, coconut and of course peach. It seems crazy to me to discover an allergy while on the Whole30 and limiting my diet further right now seems insurmountable. I am relying heavily on coconut right now. Can you give me any advice? Resources? Forums? Etc. I think I may have some kind of food allergy/sensitivity that causes "hayfever". I would consider going to an allergist but with my insurance I think that would not be an option right now, maybe after Jan.1. Has anyone else ever been through this? Is this normal for day 6/7 for some people? Maybe it is just hayfever? Thank you guys I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Hey there

It's not uncommon for over exposure of a food item to result in some kind of sensitivity. Of the foods you've listed the most common culprit would be eggs, but a sensitivty to ANY of those foods isn't out of the question.

Have you been keeping a food log? Or can you list out exactly what your meals have looked like over the past 3-4 days, giving specifics on veg types etc? It may be that something jumps out at us...

I just saw this, still getting the hang of this forum set up. I cut out peaches, reduced the coconut flakes/milk and cut out cashews since then and haven't had an episode like that. I still have slight allergy symptoms but nothing like those couple of days. It has been extremely hot where I live and we have been running our AC a lot. Honestly, I am not feeling great as of day 14. Headache, unhappy belly, tired, some dizzy spells yesterday (after getting really hot). I did slip a little on day 11. It could be many things. Here are some of the meals I have been rotating over the past couple weeks:

Breakfast: banana, berries, sunflower seeds and almond butter (I had done versions of this with cashews, coconut flakes, coconut milk)

                    eggs, eggs and hashbrowns

Lunch: leftovers and salad (greens, tomato, avocado, mushrooms with "messed up mayo" turned vinaigrette as dressing)

Dinner/leftovers: smoked pulled pork (from farmer's market), italian sausage (farmers market) , grilled veggies (zucchini, portabello, asparagus, carrots), cauliflower "fried"rice, Sue's sweet potato and chicken hash, potatoes with ghee

Snacks (occasional): luna bar, jerky

using nutpods creamer in my coffee, use ghee to cook with

I had a pretty rough experience in this forum (from a moderator) yesterday that almost made me completely give up. I thank you in advance for your help and I ask you to be mindful that I am struggling a bit and sensitive. My confidence was rocked. Thanks!

Ok, you're not going to like this, but your lack of energy is probably a result of the fruit/fat breakfast combos. You can go 30 days following the rules (eating compliant foods), or you can go 30 days following the rules AND the recommendations - the latter gives you the most bang for your buck, and is MUCH more likely to result in Tiger Blood, or improved energy at least.

When you've fasted over night and start the day out with fruit it will impact your blood sugar, which in turn effects your mood, your appetite, and your energy. You're more likely to be hungry sooner (hello snacks), and more likely to have an afternoon dip. Breakfast sets the tone for the day so it's important to get it right - protein, vegetables & fat - honestly, it's absolute best way to start the day.

The rest of your meals look okay from the info you've provided, so I think if you switch up your breakfast you'll see a big improvement. Are you getting enough water? Salting your food? Both of these will also play a role in energy levels, headaches & dizzyness...

As far as your hayfever is concerned I'd imagine that the seeds/nut butter might well contribute to those symptoms - they'll certainly contribute to the unhappy belly you describe if eaten in volume - the recommendation being for a maximum of a closed handful of nuts every other day, so in nut butter terms maybe a tablespoon every other day.

Finally, please note that bars of any kind are for emergency use only.

Hope this helps.

No I love it, thank you. This was very helpful. I understand the difference between narrowly following the rules and really understanding the spirit of them. The reason I was choosing fruit for breakfast was for variety, easy, not a hot food (so hot here!!!), and I could share with my baby. I guess I ignored or misunderstood the "nut" section. I have been relying heavily on them and adding fruit I guess. I am understanding more the eat fat for satiety and for energy but I guess I am struggling to source that in my meals especially because I am trying to limit coconut. I also have not done any veggies at breakfast, I will try that. I am going to do some prepared stuff to make it easy and I can eat it cold. To help me source my fat, my choices are really oil, ghee, avocado or flesh. I am struggling a bit with the amount of flesh and eggs I am eating at the moment, I can't imagine eating more.  I will up the veggies and cut way down on my nuts and seeds and see how that goes. I do need to drink more water but I think I am pretty generous with the salt, I love it! Thank you for your clear and gentle response.

For fat have you tried making mayo? It's quick, easy & super tasty on pretty much everything.... Try >this one< for size ;)

Then you've the likes of duck/goose fat - both of which are awesome for roasting veg, especially potatoes.

Fatty cuts of meat llike brisket, ribs, & shin work well, especially in the slow cooker which cuts down on hands on prep time, or something like chicken wings, skin on...

And yes, breakfast is definitely easier when you've something prepared. I quite like a curry for breakfast (a mild korma works well although I've been known to eat tikka masala too) and I make it chock full of veg so I only need to worry about adding a fat, and it makes a pleasant change from eggs. Lots of people like burger patties with avocado & tomato in the morning, or you could make some kind of a wrap using steamed cabbage leaves/romaine/lettuce etc. Lots of choices, all of which can be prepared upfront to make life a little easier....

I had another hay fever "episode". I actually got up at 3:15 AM last night and took allergy meds, hate to do that, but I was miserable. I know my chiropractor said sleeplessness around 3 AM can have something to do with the liver and I think sinus stuff is associated with the liver too?  I hadn't eaten in many hours so I question if it was an oral food allergy thing. Have you ever heard of anyone else having some sort of liver detox happen this way? Normal Whole30 symptom? Maybe I just have an allergy or a cold right now? I was not eating clean prior to this and really pigged out and drank lots of wine before I started, no good, I know. I have changed up breakfast the last 2 days and sailed through until lunch, no problems. I am starting to have a little fat aversion though, maybe add some more veggies. I did that yesterday, I forgot today. I had to force myself to eat my breakfast (not like me, I EAT!). I made mayo last night too but can't imagine what to put it on other than a piece of fish. Any thoughts on this?
