Hives/Steroids

Recommended Posts

Quick question. Well, maybe two.

I'm currently on day 10 of my Whole 30.  I started getting hives on day 5  and by day 8 I was covered head to toe.  I went to the Dr. and was prescribed steroids and Zyrtec.  I have not eaten any foods that I previously had not and cannot think of anything new in my environment.  Thank fully, the itchy hives are gone today. Has anyone else experienced this?  Does this mean that I need to start my Whole 30 over?

No not necessarily.  But it would be extremely helpful if you are able to post a detailed description on what you have been eating meal wise the last few days.  Sometimes its not necessarily about anything new - but the quantity you are eating of it.  For instance if you are eating eating tomatoes morning noon and night now, whereas before you were simply eating them once or twice a week - that's going to affect your system quite a bit.

Generally the foods that cause the most issues are: Eggs, nuts (and nut butters), nightshades (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, goji berries, and potatoes).

Think I figured it out!  The first week I pretty much had the same thing for breakfast, a slice of Spinach Fritatta (Recipe from Whole 30 Book) and sometimes some fruit like fresh raspberries or blueberries.  Lunch was usually a large salad, with romaine lettuce, cucumber and tomatoes as well as a protein such as grilled chicken or left over pork topped with home made Ranch.   Dinner I ate a lot of pork, as I had made a huge roast in the pressure cooker at the beginning of the week.  I usually had a side salad of romaine, cucumber and tomato with Ranch dressing as well as a sauteed veggie (Kale, green beans, spinach) .  Also had sweet potatoes for two dinners served with ghee.  On many of those first five days, I was really hungry  and found myself snacking before dinner on walnuts, almonds and pistachios. Probably way too many-I think these may have been the hive culprit. This week is much better as I don't feel as hungry as I did the first week and haven't felt the need to snack.  We will see how it goes- last night I took my last dose of steroids.  I'm hoping the hives stay away!

Yes nuts are not the most ideal fat source because of there Omega 3 to 6 ratio.  I found out after my first whole 30 that I am for real allergic to walnuts.  (I knew there had to be a better reason why I didn't like them).

You meals look good.  But going forward, should you need a snack as you are genuinely hungry - aim for a mini meal:  veg, protein and fat - or at least 2 out of those three. Avoid snacking on things like nuts and fruit as these items tend to keep a sugar dragon fed.
