StephJ
Do you guys think a protein powder sweetened with monk fruit? It is literally a fruit juice so I'm assuming yes but I really want to do this right so just checking. Thanks!
Karen_Suep
Nope. The extract isn't allowed. If it were the fruit, that may be a different conversation. It's better to eat your food than drink it.
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted August 19, 2016 Moderators Share Posted August 19, 2016 Monk fruit is 300 times sweeter than sugar. The only reason for putting it in products is to super naturally sweeten them. Monk fruit is not really a 'fruit juice'. Yes, the juice is extracted, and then all the water is removed and it becomes a concentrate that you would never actually drink. Aside from that, there are very few protein powders that are compliant... also check out the Can I have guide linked in my signature below for our stance on Smoothies/protein shakes. StephJ
Here is a shot of the ingredient list...just in case. It says zero sugar and the monk fruit is the 2nd to last ingredient...
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted August 19, 2016 Moderators Share Posted August 19, 2016 Pea protein is not allowed on whole30 because peas are legumes. This isn't compliant, regardless of the monk fruit extract, which is also not compliant. We really want you to eat actual foods.
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted August 19, 2016 Moderators Share Posted August 19, 2016 Manufacturers can put sugar as 0 if it's under a certain amount on the nutrition label. The ingredients reign supreme on products. Not to mention the fact that this has pea protein in it which is not compliant as peas are a legume. Moderators Tom Denham Posted August 20, 2016 Moderators Share Posted August 20, 2016 The Whole30 is your time to learn to eat real food. Protein powder is not real food, so you should not be consuming any during a Whole30. And beyond that, peas are legumes and are specifically noted as not allowed during a Whole30.
