EA76
Hi, my husband and I are on day 19 and we came down with a stomach bug two days ago. We had to drive six hours today and broke down and bought a pack of tums during a gas station break. We were desperate for relief. We ate out for the first time the day before getting sick, but dined at a steak house and had very simple entrees (steak, scallops and green beans with almonds). We requested they use olive oil, no butter. I can't figure out if this is a virus or food related? Is the stomach bug common on the Whole 30? I also picked up a bottle of lemon ginger Kimbucha - only to discover it contained cane sugar after we drank it . We're having bananas, bone broth, applesauce ..... Does this mean we blew our hard work since we technically cheated by having sugar? So bummed - we were doing so good and feeling awesome.
Moderators Tom Denham Posted August 23, 2016 Moderators Share Posted August 23, 2016 Stomach bugs are as common during a Whole30 as they are at any other time in your life. Eating meat, veggies, and good fats does not make you have stomach bugs, but it won't prevent them either. Taking Tums spoiled your Whole30. It doesn't really matter that you were feeling awful. Tums are full of ingredients that do bad things to your gut. The kombucha may have been okay. All kombucha is made with sugar, but as a fermented drink, the sugar goes to feed the fermentation and is mostly transformed by the time you drink it. However, some vendors add sugar after the fermenting to sweeten the drink. When that is done, that drink is out for a Whole30.
EA76
i read that when you're sick on Whole 30 that meds are ok?? Well, I'm sorry to hear taking one tums spoiled our Whole 30. Feeling completely nauseous and driving six hours with three young children in the car was very difficult. Your response makes me very upset. Moderators Tom Denham Posted August 24, 2016 Moderators Share Posted August 24, 2016 The Whole30 is a demanding program. Sometimes life gets in the way and you need to drop out. That's okay. The reason you consume something that disrupts your gut does not stop that thing from disrupting your gut and stopping the healing process the Whole30 nurtures. Tums is not what we mean by medicine. Medicine is something your doctor advises you to take.

Tums - do rule out your whole 30, unfortunately. And yes being nauseous and driving six hours with children in the car IS difficult - no one says it isn't. But there are always better choices. Tums in this case was not the better choice.
