Baby Poo

Recommended Posts

I'm on day 10 of my Whole30 and my 3 month old is exclusively breastfed. Today I've started noticing his poops have changed from their normal mustard color to a slimy green color (sorry for the mental image). Is this normal for my change in diet?

Idk if it's *normal* per se but when I've asked my pediatrician about poop with my three month old (ebf) she said to worry only if white, black, or red. It may be that the composition of your milk has changed and he may be getting an improper balance of fore and hind milk, but it's not necessarily bad.  If you are concerned, call your dr and ask them since no one here is a medical professional.

How green are we talking? My son did this regularly and I wasn't Whole30ing at the time, but I was eliminating 'the big 8' - turned out he had multiple food allergies (although that diagnosis took a while to happen) and was reacting to predigested foods in my milk. Keep an eye on it for sure & as the others have said speak with your pediatrician.

We actually just went to the pediatrician because there was blood in his stool this morning. I've read a lot of milk and soy allergies are discovered this way but I am dairy and soy free. I've always eaten eggs so I'm wondering if it could be nuts? I've been eating way more it's since I've stared the Whole30. Did you have a similar experience? Thank you! We have a follow up apt tomorrow. I'm collecting stool samples in the meantime.

Good that you're gettingt hings lookedin to.

As I said in my original post I'd eliminated the top 8 allergens from my diet to try to continue to BF my son because he'd been very ill since birth, but he still reacted and we got the bright green slimy poo. We'd blood at that stage too which is when people started to sit up & really listen. Unfortunately with all the biggest offenders gone I was left with no option but to switch my son to a hypo allergenic formula called Neocate. It broke my heart, but it was like an on/off switch - he took to the formula instantly and there was such a HUGE improvement in him that I had no choice but to let it go. We got pretty much immediate wheat, dairy & egg allergy diagnosis after that, but weaning onto solids was a very long, drawn out process.

It could be the nuts, but it could be anything.......

Hopefully this is not the case with your son. Is he unsettled at all? Or is it just the poo?

Thank you so much for your answer. My baby is still his happy self! Can I ask if he was also not gaining a lot of weight before you switched to formula? I would hate to stop BFing....I'm sure that was so hard to do. Mom hugs!

His skin tone was grey, and he had cycles of feeding, screaming, vomitting/pooing & then back to feeding again - and no he wasn't gaining weight. Many people (mid wives included) told me the whole foremilk/hindmilk thing but I knew it was something more. And thankfully I perservered with convincing the Drs - 2 & 1/2 yrs later and he was being tested for EGID so it wasn't just me being a neurotic mum!

And yep, stopping was hard - I mean normally you'd wean themoff but we were told that stopping immediately was for the best. That was all kinds of hard, but seeing how quickly his temperamnet improved was enough for me to understand that it was the right thing to do.

I hope everything settles down for your little one soon. It could be totally unrelated to your diet and just something he's working out of his system.

Let us know how you/he get on.

If there's mucus-type stuff in the poo, then it likely is an allergy/intolerance. Finally kicking dairy after my little one was born is what made his green kind of stringy/mucusy poo (that I brought up to the pediatrician and was told what you were - as long as it wasn't black/white/red it was normal...ugh thanks for listening!) become the normal orangey/mustardy kind. Try removing the nuts from your diet and see if it improves.
