Change Takes Time--Starting October 1

My husband is a teacher who starts school this week, which is typically a stressful time for him.  My twins are starting the 1st grade the day after labor day. I am the food preparer and planner of the family, but I work full time and have health issues (crohn's disease and body aches) so change takes time for me. I am currently practicing daily meditation, walking, weight lifting and stretching/yoga.  I plan to finish listening to the audio book I bought, "It starts with food" and read the Whole30 book I bought in September in hopes that I can finish the prep and planning required to start the Whole30 on October 1st.  With luck and hard work, I hope that I'll get my act together and have food and physical fitness come together by the end of October.  Change takes time, but I'm starting!

I'm planning to start on October 1 as well!  I just finished reading the Whole30 book, and am hoping to read "It Starts With Food" in the next few weeks. I'd like to try making some of the recipes, and start scoping out ingredients so that I'll already have some favorite dishes lined up.  I've done some nutritional cleanses in the past, so dropping dairy, gluten, alcohol, and caffeine shouldn't be a problem, but no grains or beans will be more of a challenge!  Good luck getting started and preparing too!

Nice to virtually meet you! I totally agree that this will be a challenge. However, I've really enjoyed how the book, "It starts with food" is mentally preparing me so far. I'm just not sure yet what to expect with the first grocery store visit.

Agreed!  Part of this month will just be reading labels, and trying to find things at my usual stores that are compliant.  Already picked up a dijon mustard and dill relish from Whole Foods that work.  Tried to make my own mayo, but it was rather an epic fail.  It's in the fridge now, completely liquid.  Apparently people have had luck re-emulsifying it after the fact, so I'll give that a try :) I do like mayo-based salads, so looking forward to making the basic protein salad with variations.

Hope you're having a good Whole30!  I can't believe a week has gone by already!  I wasn't as prepared with prepped ahead of time fod as I would have liked to be, but got by when I made things that had more than one serving, so it held me over for a few days at a time.  Plus eggs. Lots of eggs! :)

I really liked having the month of September to get ready, so I had a sense of what meals worked for me, and what I liked.

And, the mayo problem was fixed by using an immersion blender -- worked like magic!

Hi! It has been a great start to the whole 30! I'm loving the real plans app because it helps me grocery shop. I've been really happy with the recipes, too. The biggest struggle I have had is figuring out what I can drink.  The first week I just felt really thirsty. Ironically enough though, I was so afraid that I wouldn't be able to find enough food to eat or like what I'm eating. But I do find that I'm full with lesser amounts and I love what I'm eating! I really don't miss anything and I don't have any cravings. It is so strange. September as prep month was time well spent for me. I was very good about cleaning out the pantry, the fridge, freezer, the kids cupboard, even the car and my desk at work.   I made sure I told the nanny and our family what we were up to so we would not have any conflicts.  So far so good! How was your week two Mac mama?

Well, my second week has gone relatively smoothly, I think.  I had a nasty head cold the first week, although I was still able to eat well.  I'm finding that this week, even though I think I'm eating the same amount, I'm getting hungry between meals in a way I wasn't during the first week.  It's kind of like my body, once if fought off the cold, was like, "Wait! Where did all the sugar go?"  I'm really trying to get breakfast eaten as early in the day as I can, so that the rest of my meals don't slide later.  I still like eggs, so that's something. Evening cravings haven't been a problem  -- more late morning and just before dinner.  Also, I feel like I'm cooking and washing dishes much more than usual.

For drinks, I've tried two new things that I've really enjoyed -- San Pellegrino with a lime slice over ice in a tall glass - I had this at an event where everyone else was drinking, and it was so refreshing and felt so fancy that I've started having it at home.  Also, I usually put sugar and almond milk in my coffee, but am trying full-fat coconut milk instead to get a little more fat in the day.  I recently tried adding just a sprinkle of cinnamon on top of that, and it was so yummy and fall-feeling!  Other than water, I drink a LOT of tea.  All decaf, since I gave up caffeine years ago.

It's been fun to try new recipes.  At least when I make something, it's usually enough to last at least one more meal.  I love just going to the fridge and getting something all made up already!
