BooksNCats
Greetings! I'm on Day 6 of my first Whole30. I love the program so far, but I'm running into a bit of difficulty with portion sizes. I'm following the 7-day meal plan exactly as laid out in the Whole30 book, but during individual meals I find that I'm having difficulty eating everything on my plate. I'm eating a little bit of everything, but I find that I feel uncomfortably full about halfway through most meals and can't finish. Example: last night I made ground beef + tomato sauce + spaghetti squash, and I was able to eat about 3oz of the ground beef (less than half of the serving size recommended in the book), 1c of the tomato sauce (1/2 the book's serving size), and I finished the entire serving of spaghetti squash (1/2 of a squash) but I really had to force myself to eat the whole squash serving. Going into meals, I feel hungry, and the food is appetizing, so it's not a loss-of-appetite issue, I just can't make it through all the food on the plate. This would be fine (leftovers!), except that I feel absolutely ravenous about 2 hours after each meal. Like "inhale everything in sight" ravenous, and I feel lightheaded and dizzy to boot. So, although I've been cooking according to the book's 7-day plan, what actually happens in practice is I make it halfway thru each meal and feel uncomfortably stuffed, then about 2 hours later I feel lightheaded and dizzy, so I gorge myself on the remaining 1/2. Repeat at next meal. Can I expect this to even out as I get used to the program? Just keep powering through, and try to eat a little more at each meal? Prior to beginning the Whole30 I "ate like a bird" so to speak, with lots of tiny meals throughout the day interspersed with honey-sweetened cups of tea, so I'm guessing I have some adjusting to do. Thank you! I am noticing positive changes already (mainly, that I've regained about 3-4 hours in each day because I'm sleeping through the night, waking up early, and don't need naps midday), so I'm really excited to see what the future may bring! Karen_Suep
Are you incorporating additional fat in each meal. Fat adds to satiety. Also, keep trying to finish your meal. Like eat around the plate (a little fat a little protein...) and then keep trying to eat it the next time you're able. Eventually a template meal will seem to be the right size. Moderators ShannonM816 Posted September 7, 2016 Moderators Share Posted September 7, 2016 You'll probably notice you're able to eat more at each meal over time. If you've been eating small amounts at a time, it'll just take time for your stomach to adjust to having a larger volume of food at once.
BooksNCats
Thanks guys - I'll keep at it! I like the suggestion to add more fats, too - that's always been an area I've under-eaten in, so I think I just need to get used to adding the recommended amounts of fats, rather than the splash here and there that I'm used to.
