Nancy H.
Can Coconut milk ever go sour? I took some out of my refrigerator today to use on some mixed fruit. It had been opened for awhile but I thought it would be OK. When I tasted it, it had a funny, almost sour taste. Is there only a certain length of time it can be kept opened in the refrigerator? kb0426
Hi Nancy, Some cans I have say to discard within 2 days of opening. Others I have not noticed a discard by date, but end up using it before I have noticed any spoiling.
Susan W
You also may be tasting "can". I always empty it into another container and recycle the can.
Nancy H.
You also may be tasting "can". I always empty it into another container and recycle the can. I had not thought about that, but you are right. I will transfer to another container. Thanks so much.
Susan W
Nancy, maybe dump the current can in case something is wrong, but next can put it in a different container.
Loraine
nancy I pour my coconut mik/cream into a lidded container and keep in the fridge, BUT it can and does go off if not used within a few days (much the same shelf life as opened milk. NinjaSarah
All of my cans say discard after 2 days. Usually there's not any left! I think only once I've gone 4 days and it was still okay. But I always put in a lidded glass bottle after opening and keep in the fridge.
anjelevil
I would not be using coconut milk after 3 days at the most.It goes off very quickly. If I open it I try to use it all the same day.
Robin Strathdee
I've kept them open for a week or longer with no trouble or change in taste. I'd go with your gut- if its yucky, don't eat it.
Angele Colorez De Amor
Nancy I must make mention to you amazing quote. Instead of giving myself reasons why I can't,I give myself reasons why I can.
Janine Costanzo
I've left coconut milk in the fridge for a couple of weeks and it grew mold...so it definitely can go bad. That said, I'm also of the school of thought that if it looks and smells okay, then it's probably okay to eat.
praxisproject
The funny taste might be oxidization. I used the canned kind and I find it keeps best in an air-tight glass container (I often use recycled Moccona coffee jars which I've washed) with as little air inside as possible (keep it full or use a smaller jar), stainless steel is pretty good too. MariolaDJ
Mine has definitely gone bad after a week or two in the fridge. I transfer mine from the can to a mason jar. One time I opened the jar and it exploded and hissed at me and had a sour stench and weird bubbles! Yeah! Time to dump it! I also have been putting it in plastic ziplock bags, laying it flat in the freezer so when i need it, it defrosts very quickly in a bowl of warm water. Hope that helps!
