Guest
My whole30 has made me realise two things so far. One, is that I use alcohol to deal with anxiety. Two, is that I use caffeine to deal with my depression. I really want to give up caffeine to help my mental health and IBS, but I am actually more attached to it than I was to alcohol and sugar, which is worrying... Whenever I try to give it up I get so cloudy headed and feel like I'm walking through quicksand. My depression shoots to level 30980475087 and I can't function at work. I'm on medication and my starchy veg intake is good, water intake good etc. I only have 1 or 2 cups a day but I'm quite sensitive so it's enough to cause reliance. Has anyone been in a similar situation?
CoffeeBean
Have you invested in the tea aisle lately? I heard on the whole30 you need to check since some companies add in (sulphites??) something non-compliant to the bags occasionally. Otherwise, the world is your oyster considering tea options. I know several mothers who swapped coffee for green tea and swear by the benefits. Personally I love the aroma, color, and flavor (bitter, fruity, flowery, spicy...) variety available. Plus the herbal ones for their effects (like chamomile). Best of all is finding a favorite and making a large batch for the fridge. (Boil water in small pot; simmer ~6 teabags for several minutes; dump in pitcher and top with cold water). Great job analyzing your habits! You've got the footing for the up&up life (:
Guest
thank you that's very kind. I'm yet to find a herbal tea alternative that really hits the spot. Wish I could get into green tea as a transition mechanism but I hate the taste lol!
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted September 16, 2016 Moderators Share Posted September 16, 2016 When you've given up the coffee before, did you just go cold turkey? If so, perhaps try weaning yourself off of it -- do a part decaf/part caffeinated thing for a week or two, then increase the decaf/decrease the caffeinated, stepping down as slowly as you feel comfortable with. For the tea, I can tell you that it's easy to over-brew some green teas. Some need the water to be not quite boiling or they end up kind of stewed and bitter tasting. I really like this Sweet & Spicy tea by Good Earth -- it comes in caffeinated and decaf varieties, but even the caffeinated one is less caffeine than coffee, so maybe it could help in stepping down the caffeine some. I know I've found it at a local health food store, but I think I found it at my local grocery store before too.
Karen_Suep
If you're looking for a naturally sweet tea, I like Twinings of Londons black currant tea. (I looked at the uk site and it seems compliant and about £2 per box? Def double check). It's still tea so it has some caffeine but maybe it will lead you down a tea rabbit hole? Personally I go through phases where it's nothing BUT tea or nothing BUT coffee. Thankfully, even with my southern US upbringing, I don't need tea to be sweet or cold. hopefully you'll find something you like! Btw a friend once told me that when you have withdrawal headaches, drink water. Your body is essentially detoxing so water helps flush it out. Good luck! jj18
The usual teas in the market are to preferably avoid! Like Twinings, they contain pesticides. http://theheartysoul.com/pesticides-in-tea/
