bbuoy10
This is mainly a question for the moderators, but I'd love to hear from anyone who has tried these. Are Epic bars a better go-to emergency snack than a Larabar? I know they aren't all compliant, so I'd have to read my labels. I haven't even tried one yet. Just curious. Thanks. Moderators ShannonM816 Posted September 23, 2016 Moderators Share Posted September 23, 2016 Epic bars are meat bars. Flavor-wise, more like a jerky, although they're somehow ground or something so the texture is different than jerky. Lara bars are dates and nuts, very sweet tasting, more like eating a candy bar. I personally am less likely to overeat or continue to crave Epic bars, plus, they have more protein, so to me, they seem like a better choice if you need to have some kind of bar. ArtFossil
Lara bar: 8-11 grams of sugar; 2 grams of protein! They are total sugar bombs. I've never had an Epic bar and probably never will as I don't like jerky. But even an Epic bar has 7 grams of sugar and only 8 grams of protein. You can do better eating food, not products. There are so many things that are easily portable including eggs and tins of meat, fish or veggies.
Karen_Suep
@ArtFossil epic bars actually vary a bit on protein and carbs depending on which flavor you get. The ones with fruit added tend to have more carbs but there is at least one that is pure meat (though I'm not sure if it's compliant. It's the one I like least so I don't ever buy it.) @bbuoy10 like Shannon said, I'm less likely to over indulge on epic bars. I haven't tried Lara bars but I know I tend to have an easily awoken sweet tooth so I probably would just avoid them from that standpoint. And i burned myself out on epic bars before my whole30. You're more likely to have a somewhat balanced snack with epic bars but like Artfossil said eating real food wins.
jmcbn
I'm from the camp that thinks if you can plan for an emergency that you can plan to have real food. Yes, they're handy, but so are tins of fish and pouches of olives. I've eaten this way for a long time. I train, I work full-time, I travel, I get stuck in traffic and I get waylaid just like anyone else and I've never had the need for a larabar an RX bar, an epic bar or any kind of a packaged bar (either store bought or home-made), ever. bbuoy10
I've tried Larabars, and they're okay. I'm not a big fan of dates. I'd probably like jerky (if I could any compliant brands) or Epic bars better. But I agree that real food is best. Thanks.
MeadowLily
Meat bars are like mincemeat pie without the crust. Have you ever had one. Grandmaw used to make them. Minced meat with raisins, apples and spices. They're an acquired taste that I've not yet been able to get a hankering for. I can't get beyond Grandmaw's mincemeat pie. bbuoy10
lol. No, I've never had mincemeat. And I'm a little scared of Epic bars.
beachgrrl421
I enjoy epic bars much more than larabars. I barely eat them, only in a serious emergency where I didn't prepare enough or was stuck somewhere. I'd rather eat an epic bar then be starving and make a mistake. I only like the uncured bacon bar but it kinda looks like dog food haha. I really like the taste though! Larabars are an awful texture to me, dry and a weird sweet flavor! MeadowLily
The average larabar has 23 grams of sugar. One ounce of honey has 23 grams of sugar and 4 small dates have approx. 23 grams of sugar. Reeses Peanut Butter Cups 2 pieces (1 package/42g) Sugars, total: 20grams
Moderators ultrarunnergirl Posted September 28, 2016 Moderators Share Posted September 28, 2016 I usually bring one with me on long hikes. I carry envelopes of compliant tuna when traveling, along with baby carrots and/or a salad in a baggie or disposable container. Epic bars are WAY better than larabars in holding you over if you're talking about hours stranded away from real food, IMO.
