Restarting after falling off the tracks!

Cporte12

Recommended Posts

Hi all! Today would mark the third week on w30, but due to a a lack of self control, along with the most extreme PMS cravings, I binged for like 4 days straight! So now I'm bloated and gross feeling, but excited to get on track today! Is there anyone else here that fell off who would like to restart and keep each other company??

I am 27, female, 5'9

sw: 214, lw 148, hw 255.

I have a history of eating disorders and have always been up and down with my weight. I'm excited to finally treat my body right and eat healthily!

Hi, @Cporte12, sorry to hear you hit a rough spot.

What happened may not have as much to do with self control as you think. When a woman is in the week or so leading up to her period, it's absolutely normal for her to crave carbs and just more food in general. It's part of prepping the body for pregnancy, in case that should happen in that particular cycle. Because so many of us have spent our lives restricting our food and convincing ourselves to eat as little as possible, sometimes we have trouble acknowledging that it's okay to just eat more. But it is absolutely okay. This time around, when you start feeling those cravings, or if you know it's getting to be about that time of the month (and women's cycles sometimes change on Whole30, even if they're on a birth control that usually regulates it, so don't be surprised if it's not when you expect it), just go ahead and eat more. Eat more in general, but add more starchy vegetables like potato, sweet potato, winter squashes, and root vegetables for sure. It'll help you get through those cravings without giving in to eating non-compliant foods.

If you browse through the Ladies Only section of the forum, or google Whole30 pms cravings, you'll find quite a few past discussions of this -- it's not just you, it's something that happens naturally.

Learn from it and move on!  We all fall into the hole(I fall in all the time) but it's about progress, maybe get out of the hole and back on track in a shorter period of time every time. or I always think when I'm feeling out of control with my eating, how far down the hole and how big is the hole?  Can I hit the pot hole and keep going?!  That's where I'm trying to go.  That's my food freedom!  I'm on day 3!  Get back on track and let's support each other!

That sounds great! It just sucks that one bite or one meal off track leads to days and days! Today is my day 2, I'm so ready for success this time and know more of what my triggers are! I will definitely prep more around that time of the month and make sure I have sweeter whole foods on hand. Let's do this!!

I totally agree on one bite turning into days and days but let's get better!  I'd love to be able to actually just have one bite someday and move on.  Gotta dream big!

Yesterday for me was good.  I've been eating 2 servings of dinner at night, definitely a little over eating but being so extremely full is keeping my evening sugar dragon at bay.  Last night she came out and I had a square of a treat (date, walnut, cacao processed with chopped raw almonds).  I grabbed for seconds but had a change of heart and put the treats back in the freezer. Progress!

How did your day go yesterday?

Sorry to be a Debbie Downer here but this kind of 'treat' is off limits (see the official take on it below) , and will only serve to feed your Dragon - f you want it to go away you need to starve it. I mean if a stray cat comes to your door & you keep feeding it it keeps coming back, right?

The absolute best thing you can do if this happens again is to reach for fat - a spoonful of macnut oil, or coconut oil, or a handful of olives. Fat will give that same pleasurable feeling the brain is craving without any of the pain. In short, fat is your friend.

Cacao (100%): Yes

Cacao (or 100% cocoa) is great when used as a savory spice (our Mocha Steak Rub, found in It Starts With Food, is a great example), but you can also feel free to add it to your coffee or tea, or brew it Crio Bru-style. But per the rules of the program, it’s not okay to add cocoa to dates and other fruits to make chocolate-y confections.

Hi jmcbn,

No wonder I felt so guilty eating it!  Ha!  I thought I read that but then I thought I saw people using larabars on whole 30 so I thought it was okay--good to know its not.  Starving the sugar dragon makes sense.  I just ordered coconut butter so I'll start using that as my treat. What about gt's kombucha.  I thought that was whole 30 but I can see where it might also feed my sugar dragon?

I will continue on with my whole 30.  As its my first one and my focus is food freedom I'm not going to fall of the wagon for mistakes.  I'm going to keep chugging along and learn.  Every whole 30 I'll improve.

thanks again for your help!

Larabars are for emergency use only. I've been here quite a while and I've yet to see an emergency that warranted their use. I mean if you can plan for an emergency you can plan to have real food. Personally I keep tinned fish and a couple of pouches of olives in the glove compartment of my car & in my office. Protein & fat is a MUCH better option than fruit & nuts. Fact.

Coconut butter is a tricky one. It's a fat, yes, but people very often eat it straight from the jar with a spoon - and who ever stops at one spoonful? I'd approach it with extreme caution if I were you. If you like olives it's pretty hard to overeat those so they're a much safer option - and this won't be a long term thing if you approach it right.

Kombucha is fine so long as there has been no sugar added in the second ferment. I believe GT does a flavour or two that are okay...

Hope this helps :)

it sounds like you still did fairly well! I know the treat was off limits, and we technically can't have any, but just the fact that you were able to put additional servings back is great! I am working on it myself! We will get to the food freedom :)

I did okay, I work nights so my schedule is weird. so I was only up after school hours yesterday because I was switching back to days for a few days here. I only had my dinner, which was sautéed veggies with two over easy eggs over top. My favorite! I never knew how good sweet potato would be with egg, onion, mushroom, spinach, and kale!

Wvwn though I ate later, I still ended up wanting something sweet :-/ I shared an apple with my son! I will be better today!

Today went great for me...until this evening. Trigger warning* I had a slip up with my eating disordered past. I was doing very well with it for a couple years now (only having a few slips), and I'm disappointed in myself for letting myself succumb into it. That won't happen again! Not sure what triggered it, maybe it was the apple (if I had that I might as well eat everything and just get rid of it). I just want to be healthy and experience this food freedom! But I admit to my mistakes and tomorrow will be better.

How are you doing Cporte12?  I think I'm going to restart tomorrow.  I fell in the hole ( not completely) but between the cacao and date, then I found sugar in the ingredients of the sausage I used in my pasta sauce this week.  0 grams of sugar was listed but found sugar listed under spices in ingredients.  Then today I got carried away with the almond butter...

Feeling frustrated.

Hi Angie!

Yesterdqy was going very well for me, but it was my husband and i's one night off work together and we had a few drinks. So I technically started over today. I had also had a handful of chips and a few bites of ice cream. Not sure why. I paid for it though with the worst abdominal pain that woke me up. I wont do that again! I haven't even bought almond butter yet because I know it will be easy for me to eat too much of! Here's to a new day! About to drink some yummy black coffee at work lol. At least I'm getting used to the coffee. I understand your frustration! But if it were super easy, everyone would do it. Let's do this right this time so we can enjoy a yummy thanksgiving meal next month!! :)

I will! I am doing very well! I'm glad to hear we are both back on track :) I am so motivated right now. Even though I have fallen off a couple times, I still can't help but notice my energy level improving. I have been motivated to clean and organize our house and just go for hours! I love it!
