Busy Working Mom
I'm all geared up to start my first whole30 and for religious reasons realized I'll need to eat bread on the sabbath twice a week. (I'm Jewish orthodox). I can do gluten free but will need to have a slice Friday night and a slice Saturday afternoon. Am I sabotaging the whole thing? Not an option for me to skip bread due to my religious beliefs.... do you think I should forget about whole30? Feeling bummed out. I did notice the book mentions communion bread but that's just a nibble and this is a WHOLE SLICE twice a week. I really want to try w30 but if it's not going to work, I'd rather not try. Any thoughts on this? Thanks loads for the support. This forum is amazing.
Moderators ShannonM816 Posted October 20, 2016 Moderators Share Posted October 20, 2016 Any religious belief trumps Whole30. Will having bread twice a week affect your results? Possibly. Is a Whole30 plus bread for religious purposes still worth doing? Probably, especially if it's a big change from how you're eating now. I don't know a lot about Jewish tradition, so I can't really make specific recommendations, but do the best you can. Can you bring the bread that is used, or is it a special loaf? If you can bring it in, you could look for paleo breads that have the least non-Whole30 ingredients, whether they're ones you buy or recipes to make. If you have to go with what is being provided, I think the gluten free would be the better choice. And to whatever extent you can, go with the smallest amount that you can get by with. Again, I'm not really familiar with the tradition, I don't know to what extent that's possible.
Busy Working Mom
Thank you so much @ShannonM816. I did a little more research and spoke to a few other Orthodox Jewish people who have done Whole30, which was great. Seems like there are some workarounds so I might be able to avoid having any bread. Someone also told me that she had a very small spelt matza (which is like a cracker) and that didn't interfere with her results and was ok from a religious perspective. I think I will try one of those solutions. Thank you so much again.
Crastney
also depends what's more important - your health or your religion. You might think that religion tops everything, in which case, you probably can't do Whole30, you might think that you are so unhealthy that you need W30, and religion can go hang for 30 days - that's fine too. some might question religion - should your religous text of choice be telling you the optimal health food? if not then is that text trully as great as claimed? everyone takes their own route through a W30. You chose the route that's best for you.
