Enough excuses! Starting 11/21!!

Hey All!

Glad to hear everyone so positive!  At Day 21 now things are starting to feel more routine and 'easy'.  I still have to be on my guard though.  Like you @MizRik I've had moments where I started to fall back into old patterns and had to catch myself.  My weeks are pretty busy so making sure I meal plan, shop and prep on Sundays is crucial.  Last week I found myself putting it off and being lazy.  Wasn't till early evening I became more 'present' and realized what I was going.  I got my butt in gear and planned, shopped and prepped my little heart out.  I have to watch out for potential pitfalls but one of the great NSVs of Whole30 is I'm becoming a lot more cognizant of my body, my feelings, my thoughts, everything.

And speaking of prep, I need to get started on shredded chicken, meatballs, various sauces and a quiche!

@mhemm I'll take some pics and try to get a photo-comparison up tomorrow.

Have an awesome Sunday everyone!

I read a few pages of THE PALEO APPROACH by Sarah Ballantyne this afternoon, and I have some ideas about why I've been suffering heartburn since day 2 of my Whole30.

I developed quite a milk habit over the summer, and milk causes the body to produce a lot more mucous than it ordinarily would. I suspect that my entire digestive tract had an extra thick coating of mucous from all my milk drinking. And when I started my Whole30, the milk went away. So that protective barrier has been thinning down to whatever will be normal. If that mucous was part of my body's protection from stomach acid... well, now it needs to make some adjustments.

I've had discomfort in my small intestine and large intestine all during the past week, in addition to the heartburn. So I do think the changeover in gut flora plus the change in the mucous layer is behind all this. I will certainly tell my doctor what has been happening when I see her on the 13th, but I think it is reasonable to hope that all of this digestive upset will calm down once my body fully adjusts to the Whole30 diet. Fingers crossed. ;)

Good researching Jessica! Love to see people putting their own research toward their own context... it definitely sounds like you could be on to something.  The mucous layer thing is real and often causes problems for people when they do reintroduction and find themselves very sensitive to dairy products... so you may already know that dairy is going to be a problem going forward...

Keep going, things will get better!

Are there good sources that prove this?  Whole9's dairy manifesto doesn't specifically address mucous, and while there are plenty of anecdotal sources pointing to a dairy-mucous connection, I couldn't find a good study that confirmed it:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/2154152

Thanks, SugarcubeOD!

I also read that milk produces an insulin response far greater than one would expect from its carb content, and that fact dovetails with my experience of eating paleo plus milk (raw from local grassfed cows) all summer, plus ramping up my exercise during that time (lifting weights 2-3x/week and swimming 1400 meters 3x/week) and gaining 4 pounds with no change in body composition. It was the milk.

So I have no desire to go back to drinking milk once my Whole30 is complete. I was hoping to be able to have heavy cream, I'll admit, but that may not be feasible. And, honestly, I'm finding coconut cream to be so lusciously good that cream from cows currently feels like less of an issue than it did a week ago. ;) I was also hoping that butter without the clarifying would be something I could eventually add back in, but that's more a matter of convenience than anything else - It would be nice to skip the clarifying chore. But I can see that I really am managing very nicely without dairy. So I may not bother with testing it when I get to reintroduction. I'll just go forward happily without dairy.

Day 15 - HALFWAY THERE!!!

I had a super busy weekend which was good because I didn't think so much about Whole30, except at meal time of course :)   I found yesterday hard.  Went to the grocery store and picked up supplies for my holiday baking.  Didn't dare attempt doing any of that yet! :o  We put up our tree and decorated it yesterday.  I've ALWAYS done that with a glass (or 2!) of eggnog or wine.  Yesterday, it was club soda    It just wasn't the same, but after 2 weeks, I kept telling myself it wouldn't be worth it to cheat now!  Weird thing, though.  It was the first time I've had club soda since starting the Whole30 and it made me want to snack!  I had a few pistachios but that was it.  I know it was a mental thing associating the carbonized drink with snacks.  I've done really well with no evening snacking so far.  I usually have orange tea in the evenings, so I think I better stick to that :)

Didn't have much time over the weekend for planning and prepping for the week, so I will have to make sure I make time tonight.

I had my first food dream the other night.  Dreamt I was halfway through eating a burger when I realized it was on a BUN!  Then I lifted the bun and there was CHEESE!  I think I woke up in a cold sweat after that! :P

Have a good week everyone!

@PattiMcK Pretty similar to my own food dreams...they're mostly about accidentally eating something off plan!  I've even woken-up upset with myself for something that happened in a dream...too funny!  Can't wait till I eventually get to the 'Food Freedom' part of all this so my subconsious can stop being so anxious!

Woah, I can tell a difference in your face!
I haven't started my first one yet.  My husband and I are waiting until probably Feb to start because of holidays and there are at least 10 birthday/holiday parties that we'll attend between now and end of January.

Excited to be half way done!!!! Re-cap of my time so far.... it hasn't been bad. My "hangover" was mild in the beginning. I only had hit and miss moments of wanting to kill all things. I still want naps on occasion but my energy is slowly getting better. My bloating was ten times better until shark week hit (stupid shark week.) The hardest days for me have been the past few and it's just that I'm tired of meal prep, I'm tired of planning and I wish I had a chef! Tigers blood?? Nope, none yet. Best #NSV is that my Levi's fit a little better and my sugar dragon has really not even been around. In fact my sugar dragon has been weaker and smaller than a baby lizard! Bring on the next 15 days!!

Oh as for my dinner with friends last night I marinated some steaks for about 24 hours in coconut aminos, red pepper flakes and garlic. Then grilled up some veggies on the side. Super simple but super yummy and everyone loved it.

Our planning for Cancun was simple. We just booked flights. This trip was actually a Spur of the moment thing. My husbands boss offered him his timeshare last week if we wanted it. We decided what the hell and asked two friends to go with us. Now I officially have another reason to stick to the whole30. At first it really was about health, not I gotta get swimsuit ready!! YIKES!!!

I need to go back and find this pistachio recipe everyone is raving about

speaking of recipes!! Dump ranch!! Best thing ever!!! I have made multiple batches and my kids keep eating it all!

@Sarah_MT I need to get meal prepping for the week right now and I do NOT want to. That is the only part of the whole30 I'm struggling with at this point.

@AliceV  I'm pretty sure eating fruit with a meal is fine. I think they say around two servings a day, just don't use it to curb a sweet craving.  I just double checked the book. There is a blurb on page 81 about fruit and the amount.

@Jessica NG hope your docs appointment is helpful. I have been worried about you with all this heartburn.

Happy Day 15!  Wow!  Halfway!

I have always been reluctant to cook seafood because I am always worried that I will poison everyone with under-cooked food.  Well, my fear is finally justified - luckily I was the only one eating the scallops.  So I am slowly introducing food again today, but honestly want nothing.  I've had a few bottles of water, a mug of broth, and an Rxbar.  Tomorrow will be a better day.

Great job everyone!B)

@Jessica NG  it's so interesting what you found out about the milk issue. It certainly sounds logical. I hope this now starts to resolve for you!

@PattiMcK that's so funny about your dream!

@Sarah_MT When I have food dreams, it's always eating something that I never eat anyway!

@MizRik I'm so glad you got us started on this journey! I've had a pretty easy time for the first half of the Whole 30. That is largely because I was so very miserable before I started.  My goal is to do this for at least 100 days, and then eat this way most of the time. For me, having a support group is a very important ingredient for my success, so I really appreciate you all being here each day! Not sure if you're referring to the pistachio pesto. If so, here it is: http://paleomg.com/pistachio-pesto-chicken-pasta/

@mhemm  So sorry to hear about your run in with the scallops. Hope you're back on track soon!

My NSV for the day:  I often work from home, which means working from my kitchen table....which is in the kitchen. I can get very distracted knowing I'm surrounded by food. I had great focus and worked through the day today, only stopping for planned meals.  The focus and reduction in cravings has always been the very best part of the Whole30 for me!

I can't believe we're HALF WAY THERE!

Hah! You and me both! I knew the meal planning - and the greater amount of cooking - would be the big challenge for me. The support I'm getting from y'all plus the formality of this being a ***WHOLE 30*** is really helping me a lot. Whenever I would simply try to reform my meal planning (which I've done many times over the years) I never lasted longer than 3 days. So I am thrilled that I am finally beginning to learn how to make it work for me. Day 15, woo hoo! :D

@CCLaymon Thanks for reposting the link! Like Rikki, I too was thinking I needed to go hunting for the pistachio recipe that everyone is praising. :D

@MizRik Ditto CC's thanks for starting us off! You've gathered a wonderful group here, and I am so grateful for the support.

I've been tracking the changes in the heartburn, so that I can report accurately on it to my doctor.

I think it is quite odd that best time is when I first wake up in the morning, when I've been lying close to flat all night, and while I'm still lying down. Back when I was dealing with H. Pylori - but before my diagnosis - the specialist told me to prop up the head of my bed, so that I *wouldn't* be lying flat. Lying flat doesn't currently seem to be a problem at all.

BUT as soon as I get up and stand up, the heartburn worsens slightly. Not a lot, but some. Even though I haven't eaten yet.

Then, when I eat breakfast, it doesn't really change much. It's better while I am at the gym - both weight lifting and swimming help. The chimichurri sauce seemed to worsen it, but I haven't eaten that again. (It's in the freezer, since it doesn't last too long in the fridge, and I don't want to waste it.)

It worsens slightly as the evening goes by. And then I go to sleep, and wake up thinking: oh, I think it's almost gone. Except, once I'm out of bed, it's clear that it hasn't gone.

I will tell my doctor all of the above.

When this first Whole30 of mine is complete, I intend to eat this way most of the time also.

I've rethought my intro plans. I don't want to feel sick or otherwise unwell during the holidays, so I think I will wait to do any testing until AFTER January 1. :D

Today was super busy for me. Between Christmas prep, getting myself to the gym, making mayo, making aioli, doing a little prep work to help my son with a big school project, and so on, I didn't have a moment to spare! My poor novel was entirely neglected. I hope to get in some good revision work tomorrow.

Tonight was leftovers for dinner. My son had the last of the chicken-veggie soup. My daughter was out all evening doing soccer conditioning first and then stage tech second. So she ate with the drama people. My husband and I had the ground beef from a few nights back, topped with the fresh aioli. Yum! I had leftover spicy apples on the side. He had a bunch of carrots. :D

Somehow, the fact that we had TOTALLY delicious leftovers available made me really happy. It seems proof that I really am improving on this whole meal planning and steady, continuous cooking deal. An NSV, come to think of it.

Following @mhemm's example I'm posting some progress shots.  Tried to find close-ups of my face but looking back through my pics I guess my skill at finding the right selfie angle to look skinnier is well-honed.

So, I'm gonna be brave and share some full-body pics .  Not the same angle or outfit but I think you can see how my body composition is changing.  Next Wednesday (my Day 31!) I'll take more pics in the same workout clothes as Day 1.

Some more NSV's; my energy levels are WAY up, I'm pushing harder at the gym and having more pep, and tonight - I thought I'd have to choke down my 6th (and last) serving of zucchini lasagna in a row - and actually, it was still good & tasty - didn't feel the craving to eat something else - I interpret this as food, though enjoyable, is becoming more like fuel and not something I seek for emotional support or craving satisfaction.

Day 1...Day 7...Day 22...

I'm more afraid of poisoning my family with raw poultry or pork than raw seafood. Did it smell ok when you were preparing it? I hope you feel better soon!

You guys are a great group to follow - sounds like you're all doing wonderfully!

Holy cow-- these photos are great! Look at your butt-- fantastic progress! I need to start back up at the gym again, too. I've just been lazy and make lots of excuses. I used to go after work so that I'd have no excuse for not wanting to leave my house. I'll have to try doing that again. Maybe I'll have good success like you did! :D

Thanks everyone for your concern!  I am fine today - still a bit dehydrated and tentative, but ate a good supper last night and am back at it this morning!  @NoMoreCrunchyCravings - They were frozen and undercooked, I bit into a cold one and stopped eating them - must have been just enough.

NSV's:

My family loves barbecues so this recipe was amazing - they ate theirs on buns with cheese

http://www.jaysbakingmecrazy.com/2015/04/13/sloppy-joes-paleo-whole30/

I told my husband this morning that my new underwear fits perfectly - that I've really been struggling with undies lately  - we both wonder if it's the underwear that fits me or me that fits the underwear...

My jeans are getting almost big, not just fitting better, my rings are spinning on my finger

TMI - my boobs are shrinking - sorry

Happy Day 16!!!B)
