Back2Schoolmom04
I went to the store today to find ingredients to make bbq sauce and ranch (recipe in It starts with food) and I couldn't find a few compliant ingredients! So sad! I need a olive oil mayo for the ranch and a Dijon mustard for the bbq. The mustards all had sulphites and there was sugar in all the mayos. I'm new at this so I am not sure where to look. Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted December 28, 2016 Moderators Share Posted December 28, 2016 You could try and mess around with powdered mustard and other spices for the mustard. You can make your own mayo. There are tons of recipes but personally I like the one from Mel Joulwan... google whole30 mayo well fed and try that one. Moderators ShannonM816 Posted December 28, 2016 Moderators Share Posted December 28, 2016 The mayo in the book is probably homemade. If there's not a recipe in the book, or if you just want a super easy version, I use this one: http://thehealthyfoodie.com/fail-proof-home-made-paleo-mayo-whole30-compliant/ For the mustard, if you can't find a compliant dijon, try a stone ground mustard or some other variety instead -- it may be a slightly different flavor but should be okay. I'd probably just avoid plain yellow mustard unless that's all you can find.
jkh0710
Annie's Naturals Organic Dijon Mustard is compliant. I've gotten it at Whole Foods, Kroger, and ordered Amazon before.
aprilb
And the WholeFoods own brand, 365, of organic dijon mustard is also compliant.
Raven
Tessemae's mayo is compliant, but it's cheaper to make your own.
Sugre
1) Definitely make your own mayo. Using a food processor takes 5 minutes and tastes amazing. Tip: don't add the oil too fast: http://whole30.com/2014/05/mayo/ 2) can't vouch for this yet but plan to try this ranch sub: http://www.thepinningmama.com/whole30-homemade-ranch-seasoning-mix/

Sadly, cleanup takes longer than actually emulsifying the mayo does. Good thing it's so delicious, or I wouldn't bother making it for how much of a pain cleaning off the blades of the blender can be! The two minutes includes measuring the ingredients and separating the egg. A small silicon spatula makes it easy to quickly get ALL the mayo off the blades. A small silicon spatula makes it easy to quickly get ALL the mayo off the blades. You must be a very methodical egg separator. My immersion blender has such tight corners (can a round appliance actually have corners?) that I don't believe I could squeeze even a miniature spatula in there. I usually use my fingers to push any leftover mayo away from the blades and then lick them (my fingers, not the blades) as a reward for retrieving even a little extra blob of mayo that would otherwise have ended up in the sink. Then I soak my immersion blender head in warm soapy water, and use the corner of a sponge and a strong stream of hot water to get the rest of the mayo and oily residue off the blades. Moderators ShannonM816 Posted January 2, 2017 Moderators Share Posted January 2, 2017 @NoMoreCrunchyCravings have you tried running the immersion blender in a little water, as if you were blending the water? That usually gets most of the stuff off mine. Just use a tall container and just enough water to cover the blades, don't get it too deep or it could splash out. It does a little bit, but I find I still have to dig around with the soapy sponge to get most of it out. Despite how annoying it is to clean, it is BY NO MEANS a reason to avoid making the mayo - that stuff is so freaking good!
Moderators SugarcubeOD Posted January 2, 2017 Moderators Share Posted January 2, 2017 I have the same blender... I put a 500ml mason jar in the sink with a drop of dish soap and then run the water into the jar while I"m blending... make sure you repeatedly immerse and remove the head of the blender while you've got it running (like stabbing it repeatedly into the jar). If you use soap and hot enough water, it comes clean licketysplit!
praxisproject
I have a similar metal-bladed immersion blender and the removable bit goes in the dishwasher best to check your own brand Also, for the cooking-challenged, Tessemae's has a compliant BBQ sauce AND a compliant Ranch(ish - no, it's not very traditional). http://www.tessemaes.com/products/organic-bbq-saucehttp://www.tessemaes.com/products/organic-zesty-ranch Always check that it's Whole30 approved, as some of their products are not http://www.tessemaes.com/collections/all/whole30-approved
Sarasaurus
I have a similar blender and was having the same issue. I started using a really skinny bottle brush to poke through the holes on the side, and that lets me get those last little bits of mayo that want to stick under (above?) the blades. The brushes made for cleaning reusable straws would probably work well too.
