Intense gas and diarrhea!

I'm on Day 3 of my first round and I'm wondering if it's normal to have intense gas and diarrhea while doing Whole30? For days 1 and 2 I didn't eat any starchy veggies at all, just veggies, chicken, eggs, nuts, fruit and complaint oils (coconut and olive). But I got a really bad headache yesterday (end of Day 2) and thought maybe I needed more carbs esp as I'm working out this week. So this morning I boiled a mostly ripe plantain and ate 1/3 of it with my eggs and veggies for breakfast and then another 1/3 of it with my salad (lettuce, spinach, celery, bell peppers, red onion, olives with balsamic and red wine vinegar and olive oil) and grilled chicken for lunch. About an hour after lunch the painful gas started followed by the diarrhea. I'm wondering if the newly introduced sugar/starch from the plantain could have caused the diarrhea? Or maybe my system is just getting used to all veggies all the time? I can live with the diarrhea itself but the very, very painful gas is horrible.

Lots of foods (even compliant ones) can cause digestive distress - especially if you're eating more of them than usual. Things like raw veg - especially peppers, onion & celery in particular can be hard to digest. Nuts are notorious for causing bloating/gas which is why we'd recommend you eat a closed handful every other day, max.

It's a little early to see any pattern, but I'd suggest you eat more cooked veg than raw, and go easy on the nuts. Make sure you are drinking the recommended half an ounce of water per pound of body weight, daily, and remember to salt your food - sodium intake takes a HUGE hit when switching to whole foods and you need to replkace it especially since you are working out.

Let us know how you get on.

I am on day 4 and totally uncomfortable :( I've been severely bloated with clear the room non-stop gas. Help!!!! The main reason I am doing this is to pinpoint what's causing my bloating/gas and the fact it's so intense right now has me worried. :-/ Could I not be digesting fat well?

Gibbsaf, I don't know if this will help you but I followed JMCBN's advice and stop using raw veggies yesterday and today and my gas pains went away! Have you been using a lot of raw veggies and/or nuts?

After reading through some other posts about nuts, I'm worried it could be nuts or worse, my nut Pods (noooo!!). I have a few nuts sprinkled on my salad for lunch but that's not new. I've also had Nut Pods in the past with no issues. One new thing I've introduced were fried plantains. I've also roasted up some potatoes for my post workout starch. I also never eat this much fat :-/ I'm slightly worried I don't digest fat well based on what I've read (again TMI - sorry!) about not wiping clean.

Well this is the perfect opportunity for us to figure out what works for our bodies, right? :D Perhaps change your fat sources a bit and see if that changes anything? Or not use nuts for a couple days? I know they recommend that we only use nuts every other day. Maybe avocado instead for your healthy fat?

p.s. fried plantains are amazing but I dare not make them cause I have NO control around them. I would all in sight. Are you frying very ripe plantains? Here we fry them when they are very, very ripe... the skins are dark in color when they are ready to be fried.

@gibbsaf

Its impossible for us to help without knowing what you're eating.  I suspect through my experience that even tho you say you're eating a lot of fat, it's probably not actually that much and it could be other things (raw veggies, too many nuts) that are causing the problem... If you would like directed help, list out what you've been eating including portion sizes and we can see if we can help.

No, the ones I bought were very green and they were very starchy and not sweet at all. In fact, the lack of taste made them non-addictive! Particularly when I was eating them cold the next day haha.

Ill add avocado to my salad vs nuts. Good idea! I really don't want to give up using Nut Pods in my coffee though! :-/

What can be done with diet to control diarrhea? Anything?

That all depends what you're eating. If it's severe it's fine to buy an OTC anti-d med and be sure to keep your sodium & fluid levels up. It could well be something you're eating that is causing it as there are some common culprits but it would be impossible to say without knowing exatly what you have been eating.

only new item is almond milk unsweetened

How much almond milk in a day?

And also, even compliant foods can cause diarrhea when eaten in volume or when a person is sensitive to them.
