AllisonBates
I've been a pescatarian for about 25 years (I'm 37). I stopped eating meat because I just don't like it – it grosses me out. I really want to do the Whole30 "by the book" which of course means eliminating my go-to veggie burgers, tempeh, yogurt, etc. I love salmon and shrimp but not for every meal, and I'm certainly not going to heat that up in the office microwave! I also love hard-boiled eggs, but again, not at every meal. I am committed to trying to eat meat and would actually love it if the Whole30 helps me get over my dislike of it. I'm only on Day 4, so obviously I'm not quite scarfing down the steaks yet. I did eat chicken for dinner last night and lunch today. It was a little difficult, but I did it. I find that I'm hungry for snacks (probably not enough protein at meals) and keep resorting to fruit and nuts (or plain veggies) to satisfy me, and I know we're not supposed to do that. But I'm just not at the point yet where I'm comfortable with these new protein sources, so I don't know what to add to snacks or how to get more into my meals so I don't need snacks! So I feel like I'm failing, even though I'm being 100% compliant on the "hard rules." Anyone have any advice for me? I'd really appreciate it. Administrators ladyshanny Posted January 4, 2017 Administrators Share Posted January 4, 2017 You can totally do this as a pescatarian + eggs. Salmon, shrimp, scallops, tuna, cod, tilapia, lobster, crab, canned fishes, oysters, omelettes, scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, frittata etc. For heating up leftovers, I just don't. I throw my lunch in my oversized purse at 630am and eat it room temp at noon. It's fine. And there's no smell! Check out this article about how to get used to eating meat again if that's what you want to do: http://whole9life.com/2013/02/eating-meat-a-primer-for-the-meat-challenged-2/
ArtFossil
Cod. Tuna. Halibut. Clams, mussels, sardines. There are so many fish and other types of seafood in the sea . . . and rivers. Why limit yourself to salmon and shrimp?
AllisonBates
Sorry, I guess that was misleading. I do like other types of seafood, shrimp and salmon just happen to be my favorite. I guess my point is that I'm not used to adding animal protein to everything all the time, so I almost feel paralyzed. Like, suddenly my big yummy salad for lunch seems less appealing to me because I have to put something in it I'm not used to eating, do you know what I mean? I guess like everything else, I just need to make it a habit. I'm just feeling crappy about myself right now.... I have had both an RX Bar AND a Larabar today, and I feel almost as guilty as if they were bags of Cheez-Its.

But we do encourage people to think about what they eat in a mindful manner and if less than optimal choices are made, step back and look at what caused it. Larabar and RX Bar in the same day sounds a bit like emotional or stress eating. Those items will also keep any sugar dragon roaring and will take up space in your daily intake that could/should be reserved for more nutrient dense foods. It's hard to want to eat salmon on your lunch salad when you're not even really that hungry because of the 10am Larabar. You aren't used to including animal protein with every meal. Do what you can. If a salad has just veggies in it for the first little while, let that be alright. If you are determined to hit the recommendations of meal composition eventually, that's great. Take small steps to get there. Remember, technically Whole30 could be done with just bacon, larabars and cashews.
AllisonBates
Thank you ladyshanny! And you too, ArtFossil! I appreciate both of your insights.
kruddock
Maybe you could find some recipes to make your palatable protein choices different to alleviate the boredom. I haven't tried it yet but I've been wanting to try salmon cakes, they are supposed to be really good and lots of people eat them cold. I think there is a recipe in the Whole30 book and Well Fed (not sure which volume though).
slc_melissa
Blended soups that include other types of meat might be more palatable but still give you adequate protein. You can have a cup of soup to go along with your veggie salad, so the structure of the salad you like is not changed. It's not traditional, per se, but I've blended many a chili, curry, or soup. (Immersion blenders for the win.) In my experience, ground beef blends really well. Canned chicken also blends well. (Other types of cooked chicken, like meat pulled off a rotisserie chicken, have not blended as well for me. Supposedly something about the pressure used during the canning process. Anyway.) In case you're curious as to why all the soup blending - I make my own backpacking meals.
ArtFossil
Good point, @slc_melissa. And, any protein can be stewed, curried, or spiced into something one finds delicious. Plus, the addition of fat (homemade mayo and all its flavored variants or clarified butter/ghee, for example) can also transform a protein.
