Pay close attention when it comes to dairy. A HUGE percentage of asthma sufferers also have issues with dairy. Bear in mind though that dairy often has a 'creeping' effect though so it may not be noticeable until you have a build up of it in your system...

Thanks so much for the tip!

@Bethany Stewart that's so incredible!!!! I'm so happy for you!!!!!

Day 19:

My pain in my neck is back full force. It all started with one stressful situation and it crept back into a really painful state.

It's hard to notice any positive changes when I'm hurting. I have an MRI scheduled on Monday so hopefully the source of my pain can be found. It feels like it could be multiple pinched nerves. I wonder if I cut out nightshades if it would help?  Is anyone currently on the Auto-immune plan?

Wow!  It's been way too long since I last posted.  It's spring break week and I've been working and weeding the flower beds.  It's amazing how exhausting it can be pulling up weeds and vines and stuff.

I feel like I'm doing fairly well and have gotten into the swing of things.  I've gotten the OK to have some caffine and have been drinking chai tea (black tea with chai spices that is!)  It has really helped me.

It's what? Day 23.  Today I tried a 'new' breakfast of plantains, chicken sausage and avacado.  To be honest, I wasn't all that impressed with plaintain, so I think I'll just stick to maybe a sweet potato or butternut squash hash.  Last night I made the roasted beet salad - it was good, but I don't know if it's worth the mess! :-D  I work up late, so my 'brunch' was the platains, chicken sausage and avacodo. Dinner was the last of the shepard's pie (yes, yes, I know, but it makes a lot of leftovers and is easy to make!) My snack - if I need one - will be a mini-lara bar.

Some NSV here - my clothes are fitting looser and I was able to put on a shirt that was too tight a month ago and it's looking good! :-D

sooooo odd.  I submitted this 3 days ago and it never posted.  I was disappointed that it didnt posted.  But i was about to send an update and it just appeared.  Is anyone having any technical difficulties with the blog?   Heres what I wrote: Date 3/12/2017   Hello Everyone...the last few days food wise been good.  I havent had much sleep not because i cant sleep but because mom has been in and out of the er.  Unfortunately we are in the middle of a blizzard in Massachusetts but 2 hours ago made the decision to bring my mom to the er.  So Im in the er with my parents.  Feel a bit tired.  But not hungry.  Yesterday I went food shopping and found an awesome recipe for Kale soup I wanted to make.  Also I was able to do the mac and cheese recipe that was shared in this blog.  I made enough for 3 days....delicious recipe.   I attached a picture of my dinner...which was tiliapia and grilled asparagus...  My dad and my daughter loved it.  my mom well she didnt like the texture and my hubby well hes not a veggie fan.  I am so enjoying seeing my daughter eating more fruits and vegetables.  Yesterday i was snacking on oranges and nuts.  I love my daughter reaching in my plate to eat a healthy snack.  Also i had supervision with my supervisor and told her about the whole30.  She was going to look into it.  Also I raved so much about it but then challenged her to check in with me 6 months from now to see if Im still raving.  Somehow I challenged myself without thinking.  loll.  So I will do another whole30 and will work my way to the 6months 1 month at a time.  Im really enjoying the change and am feeling great and sleeping better.  So I look forward to a healthier me.  Enjoy your day...

hi everyone.  to share an update on my whole 30 been doing well.  little sleep as mentioned before but overall in good spirits.  My appetite is lessening.  Having no ceavings is good but Im now worrying about when my 30 days is done.  Some of my clothes are looser but i dont see a physical change.  I was looking at myself in the mirror and my face looked the same...lolll.  But my clothes say differently.  Im not as bloated anymore and I am sleeping so much better.  My focus is great and wake up in better moods most of the time.  lollll.  I did have a drs appt and they did tell me I had lost some weight.  7.5lbs in fact.  I was surprised.  The dr has been on top of me to lose weight that they stressed it as a positive direction.  Im really considering another whole30 as I like being pain free.  I do feel some discomfort in my knee and back so not sure wheres that coming from.  i was getting constipated but today i went to the bathroom 3 times.  I need to pick up on drinking more water as I stopped carrying my bottled water because i lost it.  go figure...

@ckm plaintains unless its sweetened can be an acquired taste as many of my non spanish friends have told me.  but i grew up on them so i love it.  today i had mashed malanga root (tropical starch family of potatoe and sweet potatoe) with eggs.  for lunch i age chicken and steak with green beens and broccoli. I had left over for dinner.   But wasnt quite hungry.  Yesterday i did try a larabar as I was in the hospital and went too late for a hot meal.  I wasnt too impressed.  when i looked at nutritional facts, it had sugars and only 4grams of protein.  I was a bit disappointed.  Ill have them available only for emergencies.  If i have a better option.

My mom may be released from the hospital this weekend.  if she is I may have have her do the whole 30 with me in my 2nd round.  It will be good for her.  She already has heard my testimony.  She just questions ifbit will work with with her many complications: Cancer, heart and lung complications.  I think it wiñl but not sure if qe should consult a nutrition specialist as her cancer thrives on certain hormones. Anyhow any recommendations.  let me know.  thank you.  Looking forward to tomorrow.  Good night.

Hey everyone!

Sorry I haven't been posting much. I have been reading your comments though and they have been very helpful. It keeps me going. I can't believe we are so close to the end. Last night I was having to think through my reintroduction and meal planning for that. Crazy how time flies!

@Gloria Starr I am glad to hear that you are experiencing some very positive effects. 7.5 lbs is awesome! Great job! I wish I could say the same. I don't really feel like Whole30 has done much for me yet. We'll see how I feel at the end. Here's to hoping!

Good morning! I hope everyone had a good weekend.

I've noticed some NSV myself.  Clothes are DEFINITELY fitting more loosely and my sleep has been good.  I also seem to have little to no cravings and I've lost the need to snack between meals, except when my work schedule has lunch at 11 and dinner at 7.  Then I have a snack around 3.  Not too shabby I feel.

Friday is Day 31 for me, but I'm really thinking about doing the slow introduction. I do feel that going out, I won't worry so much about sauces and dressings, but I also am feeling no need to introduce sweets or gluten for a while.

Today's food plan is Kobacho squash soup with lamb meatballs for breakfast, chicken salad with spring greens and balsamic for lunch, a larabar snack and dinner is going to be a baked potato with brisket (no sauce) and roasted beets.

Hello again!  It's coming down to the wire, isn't it?  Hard to believe that we're so close.

Plan for today was chicken salad for breakfast, shepard's pie for lunch and dinner will be spaghetti squash with meat sauce.

I'm starting to think about how to handle reintroduction.  I don't want to reintroduce EVERYTHING though.  The only things I want to reintroduce are legumes and steel-cut oats.  And when I go out, not worrying so much about dressings and soups.  How does that sound to everyone?  What are your plans for reintroduction?

On to our last day! @CKM I def want to redo another whole 30.  I really dont want to return to the pain I was feeling.  I dont see much of a difference physically just yet.  I do know  some clothes feel less snug.  Ive never been one to last with a diet for too long though right now I dont even see whole30 as a diet.  Ive see it as a reintroduction to eating healthy compared to a diet which prohibits me from eating tons of food.  Ive been eating so well and feeling great, that I choose not to eat the foods that will cause inflamation.  Im more focused on that as opposed to losing weight.  This is what has me motivated.  Im challenging myself 30 days at a time until it becomes a lifestyle.  I do wonder about eating oatmeal as this I love but it means adding dairy and grain.  Again I worry of returning back to the painful state I was before.  I will do more research on the foods that caused me bloating and inflamation to ensure I stay away completely.  30 days at a time.  Whole 30 says it take 60 days to form a habit...so thats my Goal.  I want to feel healthier.  The weight loss is slow but I do prefer keeping it off than gaining. The only way to do this is changing my habits and my habits didnt form in 30 days.  So on to another 30 days at a time starting tomorrow.    My foods yesterday that were less boring were my lunch and dinner.  Lunch was kale with ham and chicken pieces along with portabello mushroom grilled to perfection.  I had a few pieces of squash too.  soo tasteey.  For dinner it was steak with peppers and brocolli which also was very tasty.  I had fruit as snacks in between.

I look forward to my last day of the 1st cycle of whole 30.  it was great to chat and see how everyone did.  I pray we can continue to be of encouragement to each other for the next 30 days.  Good day everyone.  Ciao!

@Gloria Starr I completely understand where you are coming from.  And I agree that I want this to become a lifestyle. But I need to be realistic about the challenges here.  I need a bit more flexibility in food prep.  Thus, my intent to add back beans at the very least.  I'm going back and forth on the steel-cut oats, though . . . .

Today has been going well. It was my day off, so I slept in and ate leftover Shepard's pie for breakfast.  Lunch was spaghetti squash with meat sauce. Tonight is my son's first baseball game, so I'm taking things that travel well - chicken salad, roasted beet, orange and avocado salad, 1/2 cup blackberries w/ strawberries.

CONGRATULATIONS EVERYBODY!! I hope you're all finding a way to "treat yourself," even if not with food. Finishing a Whole30 is a huge accomplishment...it's hard to believe the 30 days are almost over. Wow...

I'm almost halfway through Day 30, and I feel great. Some of the NSVs I'm especially excited about are increased/more consistent energy throughout the day (I completely eliminated snacking), improved cooking skills (I learned a lot of new recipes that are satiating, nourishing, and DELICIOUS--like, recipes that make me actually crave those nutrient-dense foods instead of "food with no brakes" and empty calories), and vast improvement with controlling my asthma. I really didn't see the asthma improvement coming--I've dealt with it for so long that it's just a part of my life. It's so liberating to realize that I can control my symptoms to the point that they're almost non-existent, simply through my diet. I haven't weighed myself and have never been very aware of how much I weigh, but I can tell that I've lost some fat and flab. My body feels leaner, stronger, and more energetic, and my mind feels clearer.

Going forward, I'm planning to follow the reintroduction protocol over the next 10+ days, paying special attention to dairy (probably will reintroduce that last). My husband's birthday fell in the middle of our Whole30, and he loves sweets, so I'm making him brownies tomorrow to celebrate. I'll use coconut oil instead of butter to keep it dairy-free, cut back on the amount of sugar I add to it, and pay attention to how I feel as I eat it to make sure I don't overeat. Because of that, gluten is going to be the first thing I reintroduce. If it wasn't for my husband's birthday, I definitely wouldn't start with gluten and that much added sugar, but I'm doing it for my husband to celebrate along with him, NOT because I'm craving dessert. Seriously, I'm really not craving sugar at all at this point! I could easily continue eating the way I've been eating for the past 30 days for a long time--I don't feel deprived in any way and my body feels so good, so well-nourished. But like @CKM said, I need to be realistic--the fact is, there's going to come a point where I crave pizza and I'll want to know how that particular food affects my body. Or I'll go out with friends and not be able to find anything Whole30-approved (living in Asia seriously restricts my eating-out options on the Whole30). Or a holiday will come around, and there will be special foods that I want to eat and thoroughly enjoy. I read It Starts With Food before starting the Whole30 to understand the theory behind the program, and now I'm working through Food Freedom Forever to figure out my post-Whole30 life. I love the idea of finding out for myself how much (if at all) I'm able to enjoy added sugar, grains, dairy, and legumes, and eating in a way that nourishes and satisfies me physically, mentally, and emotionally. Also, I love the idea that I don't need to fear food (any type of food), because pizza isn't evil! It's less healthy, and it certainly shouldn't be the staple of my diet, but unless I have an allergy or medical condition that causes severe adverse reactions, it's not like I need to avoid it like the plague or feel guilty when I eat it. I'll eat the majority of the time in a way that's satisfying and nourishing (which, for me, probably means Whole30--after my reintroduction process, I'll be able to know more specifics), and when a treat comes across my path that is special and worth it, I'll have the freedom to eat it, savor the heck out of it, and stop when I'm satisfied, all without guilt or shame. This is definitely a sustainable way to live, and I'm so thankful I found the Whole30 program and Melissa Hartwig's outlook. This is definitely the best dietary reset I've ever tried and one I plan to consistently come back to for the rest of my life.

Thank you all for your constant words of encouragement and support. I hope that all of you are able to find the way forward that is uniquely beneficial for you, and wish you all the very best! Thank you as well to our moderators--especially @jmcbn--for giving of your free time to offer your expertise and experience as a guide for us newbies.

Well, here it is - Day 30!

Today's food was spaghetti squash with meat sauce for breakfast, shepard's pie for lunch w/ blackberries, chicken salad for dinner.  Very simple and straightforward.

Tomorrow I go see the nutritionist and start discussing reintroduction. :-D

Hope everyone is doing well!!!

Well, everyone - it is done!

I went to the nutritionist today and weighed.  I've lost 8 pounds this past month, although I thought it would be moe, given how much more loosely my clothes are fitting.  My IBS is under control, I'm sleeping better and life is good.

Reintroduction is going to be different - longer - than suggested.  My nutritionist set out the following : the plan is to introduce on day 1, eat clean for days 2-3, try again day 4, eat clean day 5, and try one more time on day 6.  If no reaction, I'm good to go!  So the plan is

Week 1 - beans
Week 2 - non-gluten grains (oats, corn)
Week 3 - hard cheese
Week 4 - soft cheese
Week 5 - milk (assuming I handle cheese OK)

At this point, we're still going to avoid gluten carrying grains.  I'll meet with her again after week 5

As for sweets, my plan is to continue to avoid sugars until my birthday.  Let's be honest, there isn't likely to be any 'special' occasion that really justifies that and it feels really good to be completely off sugar again!  I'm also going to be careful with artificial sweeteners.

Reactions I'm looking at are if the food in questions results in : Cravings; GERD: or IBS.

I just wanted to let everyone know that I really appreciate their support!

Day 31!

Congrats everyone!

I went out out for dinner and a movie today. I had a glass and a half of wine and a big salad with a vinegrette dressing that may or may not have contained sugar. I'm going to take this reintroduction very slowly. I already have a headache from the wine...

Love hearing about everyone's last week and reintroduction plans!

My Whole30 hit a snag on day 22, when I was in a car accident and was in the hospital for 3 days. I had zero control over what I was fed - and, I'll be honest, my focus was elsewhere - so while I tried to avoid obvious no-no's like bread and cheese, I highly doubt I was compliant. Sad. :-( I don't have the heart to think about starting over right now, but I am planning a "Whole10" after which I will slowly reintroduce items one at a time. If I feel the need. Not how I was hoping for my last week to go!

Hi everyone!  I wanted to checkin.  Its been over a week since we finished the whole 30 and I really like the change Ive done with my foods.  Though Im not as strict as when doing the whole 30 I continue to not eat breads and sugars.  I have learned to simply say no thank you.  People will ask are you on a diet...or your still on that diet and I simply respond actually Ive just made a decision of removing certain foods that have affected my health.   I often have the opportunity of sharing how it all started and have shared the whole30 website with whoever asks.  lol.  Even my boss said oh yeah your on that diet.  We had a paid lunch at a training and they only iffered sandwiches.  So I ate the fruit and water and waited a bit later to find a healthier snack.   I continue to eat healthier...yesterdays lunch was grilled chicken salad mexican style and for dinner it was strawberry and apple steak green salad which the compination was to die for.  I went yesterday to the doctors and weighed myself....I have lost 13lbs to date.  It seems that an average of 2 lbs a week is what works with me.  Love that its a slow change and not a crash change that I always gain back.  My husband about 3 days ago began to say hes noticed a change in my body.  Hes been teasing more...lol. He loves the change♡.  Overall doing good, and looking forward to next few days.  I havent given myself a daily goal rather than  a goal several months down the line.  I want to change my earing habits permanently but do want to be realistic.   So one day at a time works for me.  How has everyone been doing since our last day. @lookyloo Im so sorry about yiur accident.  Thats so heartbreaking but Im so glad yiur ok and doing much better!  The whole10 sounds like a great way to catch up.  22days of whole 30 was still great!  You should be proud you made it past the middle...you should breeze through the 10 days as you have determination and drive:-)

Stay in touch if possible...would love to hear how everyone is doing.

Sincerely Gloria-Starr
