Alexandrawhole30
I read on the lable of one of the larabars: " Other Ingredients Dates, almonds, walnuts, unsweetened cocoa powder*, unsweetened coconut. *Fair Trade Certified by Fair Trade USA" All these things I can mix together myself at home , but from what I understood we could NOT mix together dates with cocoa powder as it would resemble chocolate? Am I wrong? I live in Norway so it is not easy to find these products without importing it from US and I cannot understand why I would have to buy these if I easily can mix together and create something similar? I hope someone can update me with this issue Greetings from me R1D5
kirkor
Lara bars are to Whole30 what Walters Mandlers are to regular eating.
MeadowLily
There are recommendations vs. rules. "RxBars, Larabars, and other dried-fruit-and-nut bars are still appropriate emergency food for your Whole30, as long as the ingredients are compliant. But as always, include these in your Whole30 cautiously, as there is serious potential to use these bars in a less healthy manner during your program. As on-the-go or emergency food? Yes. As a replacement for your mid-day sugar boost, daily late-night treat, or to satisfy your Day 3 raging Sugar Dragon? While it’s not an official Whole30 rule, we’d strongly suggest no." http://whole30.com/2015/06/future/ Here's the compliant larabars listed below. http://whole30.com/2015/01/6-whole30-ingredients/ If you can't find larabars at home. Would making a pan of them be a potential for eating them in a less healthy manner. Would making a pan of larabars be similar to eating monkey salad or a paleo cereal every day for breakfast? Whilst the ingredients are compliant will they help you establish a better relationship with food. You choose.
2sweetpeas
Below is what I found on the whole30 website about cocoa... Cacao (or 100% cocoa) is great when used as a savory spice (our Mocha Steak Rub, found in It Starts With Food, is a great example), but you can also feel free to add it to your coffee or tea, or brew it Crio Bru-style. But per the rules of the program, it’s not okay to add cocoa to dates and other fruits to make chocolate-y confections. I make "larabars" at home and my family likes the pecan pie and cashew cookie versions a lot.

You don't need to buy them, and you certainly don't need to make them. If you can prepare for an emergency (which is what larabars are to be used for) then you can prepare to have real food - pouches of olives & tins of fish are both portable & will keep for as long as you need them.
