Kat49
Hi. It looks like most people start on a Monday or 1st of the month. I usually do things like that but decided to jump right in tomorrow after doing some planning today. Love to hear from others starting on the 24th, but will participate in the forum for the next closest date if there isn't anybody else. This plan is a massive departure from my current lifestyle, but the 30 day concept seems doable. Good luck to us!
mtsu1988
I will be joining you on April 1st! Just seems easier to begin at the beginning of the month. Also gives me time to prepare.
Kat49
Great! I tend to "wing it" when it comes to planning so you probably have the right idea.
Sct0006
Today was my first day - and I did most of my planning yesterday and the day before. You will do great! This is my first time and so far the recipes I've found are amazing.
Diannhayden
T Hi there. This was my first day as well. I did really well. Other than eggs and fruit in the mornings though...I am going to have a problem. I can't think of eating the other food suggested for breakfast. How about you? cortadoplease
I'm starting tomorrow as a w30 'rehearsal' and but officially on Monday March 27 I'm also planning to go until May 1. This is my second W30. The one piece of advice I would give to anyone doing this: meal planning and meal prepping are your Friend! If you can do that, then you're 80% there. There are a lot of great meal ideas out there in the interwebs for W30 approved meals. Second piece of advice: stay on these forums and/or get a partner to do this with you in person. I have found these Forums so great for finding people to do it with, for sharing your experiences, and for really keeping you focused and committed esp when you're ready to throw in the towel. You'd be surprised how fast you can get used to eating non-traditional foods for breakfast, if you just make up your mind that you're going to be open to trying it. Maybe start out with something like this sweet potato hash topped with fried eggs, or this Sunnyside Salad, for something fairly breakfast-y. Or make up some soup to get your vegetables in -- blended soups like this one, with some eggs on the side or some sausage crumbled up in it are good if you're used to a hot breakfast. For less breakfasty type foods, salmon cakes, comfort noodles, burger patties or meatballs would be good. If it's that you're not used to eating first thing in the morning and aren't really hungry, plate up a full meal, eat as much as you can being sure you eat a combo of protein, fat, and vegetables, and set it aside. When you feel like you could eat a little more, go back to it. It generally doesn't take long to get to where you eat the whole plate at once. (This article explains why we stress the importance of trying to eat breakfast within an hour of waking in the morning.)
Diannhayden
Thanks. I may try the hash or bacon or sausages (approved of course), but I don't want to be eating other meats and veggies at breakfast. Grosses me out.

Kat49
Thanks for the advice marianne. I had a breakfast planned out but haven't had it yet. I don't normally eat breakfast so it will take some getting used to. I'm also cooking a roast that should keep me going for the next several days. Kat49
I made a trip to Costco yesterday and was shocked that I couldnt find anything, including chicken broth, organic "paleo" mayo, etc. that didn't have sugar. I only bought fresh vegetables. Even the fish had sugar or soy. Will spend the weekend planning what I can make with the limited ingredients I've got. Will also try another supermarket that has more options. I hadn't heard of ghee before but apparently my local market has it. Fortunately I don't mind eating the same food day after day so I'm sure I can make this work.
cortadoplease
Hi @Kat49 I think that's normal. The one thing about the whole30: you'll be spending more time in the kitchen than you have pre-W30 (unless you're already a chef). I like knowing what's in my food and choosing the ingredients myself (for quality) so I make my own chicken broth (it tastes so much better than store-bought), and not a huge fan of mayo but I've made my own ketchup! That was fun and interesting. You really need to just go with raw ingredients as much as possible! I'd recommend getting a whole30 cookbook if you'd like to make some lovely sauces! Well Fed by Melissa Joulwan is great!

CC60
Today is my first day and I think breakfast will be the biggest challenge for me. I need ideas that can be eaten quickly without much last minute prep. My work schedule requires me to get up early and I don't allow much time to eat, so anything quick or somewhat portable would be great.

You can make enough at dinner the night before to have leftovers for breakfast, or make a breakfast casserole, scotch eggs, or salmon cakes ahead of time. For vegetables, pre-pack a big salad, make a big pot of vegetable soup, or keep some vegetables on hand that you can cook quickly -- pre-chopped or frozen if that makes it easier. Add some avocado or olives or coconut flakes or a big dollop of mayo for fat.

I shouldn't be hungry but I often skip breakfast and lunch and have a large dinner. I guess my stomach is used to larger quantities - which is one of the reasons I'm doing W30. It was quite the eye opener with the ingredients. I made a roast to get me through the week so with no gravy or sauce, I pulled some prepared horseradish out of the pantry. Fortunately I checked the ingredients and there were sulphites. So I ended up using just seasoning salt - it tasted OK. I spent the day doing more research and planning on W30 foods. I didn't know what ghee or coconut aminos were. Phoned a health food store so tomorrow I'll pick some up. I signed up for the $15 30-day newsletter. I'm going to read them every morning and night for inspiration. How did your first day go? I happen to be home sick today with a broken foot which is why I had so much time to focus on this. Back to work on Monday which will be the real test for staying on track!

Back to work on Monday which will be the real test for staying on track! Hi Kat, I have the same problem with the empty stomach. I always ate pretty large portion sizes, so I'm trying to cut back to the recommended Whole30 plate (i.e. palm sized protein). The good thing about that, though, is that we can fill up our plate with veggies! Yesterday I found myself wanting a little more after dinner, so I went back for a second serving of brussel sprouts. I haven't had guilt-free seconds in a long time. A long lasting roast sounds like a great idea! I have to switch up my meats pretty regularly though so I don't get tired of it. I got lucky and found Ghee at my grocery store. It was $12 though, so I'll probably use it sparingly and stick to cheaper fats most of the time. I also signed up for the Whole30 Daily. I really like them so far! Today's article about self-efficacy was very motivating for me. My first day went pretty well. I didn't have to work either so I spent a lot of time doing meal prep, reading forums, etc. I know the cravings are going to hit me hard eventually though. I was watching Netflix last night and someone on the show was eating a poptart, which made me really want a poptart. I haven't had a poptart in years, so I know the only reason I wanted it was because I couldn't have it. That will be my biggest struggle. I hope you have a great Day #2! - Emily
Kat49
Hi Emily. How's it going? I got through the first 2 days OK. You mentioned wanting a Poptart when you saw someone on TV having one. I used to feel like that a lot - especially TV ads for fast food. On the evening of Day 1 about 3 times while I was watching TV I had the urge to hop off the couch and head to the fridge. But I didn't do it cause now I have a good reason. Did more shopping yesterday - got my coconut aminos (expensive, will use sparingly) and my ghee (not sure if I like it - put it on a baked potato last night). Couldn't find any compliant curry paste or horseradish but found a Dijon/horseradish mustard that looks OK so I'll use that on my beef. Was telling some people at coffee yesterday about the Whole30. They hadn't heard about it. They were surprised to hear you could have potatoes but not legumes. I think this is one of the reasons I'll do better on this plan than another one I tried. I had hired a personal trainer about a year ago and he had a diet that I followed, and I hated the food. I did lose my cravings during the month but in about 3-4 weeks after I gained the 9 lbs I lost back, and never ate any of his foods again. Plus he had me exercising really hard with not enough food to sustain me during the workouts. I'm not going to push myself too hard this month (plus the broken foot is limiting me). Good luck with Day 3!

Don't forget that the meal template actually lists a range -- 1-2 palm-sized portions of protein. 1-2 thumb-sized portions of fat, or the other equivalents listed on the meal template. Lots of veggies is definitely important too, but if you find that even with lots of them, your meals aren't keeping you satisfied 4-5 hours, it's okay to add a little more fat and protein. Kat49
How is everybody who started around March 24 doing? Just completed Day 3 and almost blew it last night. Got my usual late night cravings and contemplated eating some compliant food at midnight even though I wasn't hungry. I've heard many times to wait 5 - 10 minutes and the urge will pass, I never really tried it before. I did last night and it's true. The craving did pass! Felt really horrible this morning. Ate a larger breakfast than planned and once I had my coffee at work, felt better. So glad that the W30 book talked about what to expect. When I've felt this way before I've reached for the bread or other quick energy food to give me a boost.
gothope77
Hi Kat49, I thought I sent a comment this morning from my phone but can't find it. I'm not familiar with using the forum. I appreciate your reply to my rant last week. I started another W30 today. Had a great breakfast and lunch, and like clockwork, I started craving candy shortly after lunch for no particular reason. It was a really easy day at work. I made it home without stopping to get anything (I do home health so I'm in my car driving around a LOT.) When I got home I found out that the computer software we use for work was updated, and that it updated with MORE WORK to do! I was extremely frustrated trying to figure it out, and I mean it....I felt like a junky needing a fix! I've never experienced this before! I thought so many times I would get in my car and go to the store for candy! This is blowing my mind. I've never felt this out of control before. I was in a horrible mood all evening. I did cave and have a Nick's Stick (compliant beef jerky stick,) while trying to figure out my computer stuff. Anyway, it was a really rough start. But I made it. My first time around I was so happy and proud of myself (after the first few weeks....those first weeks were rough but not this rough.) Anyway, day 1 in the books. I do hope you have success and you make it through the 30 days at least. It is one of the most meaningful and eye opening experiences I've ever had. I've been in fitness or health business (I'm a physical therapist assistant) since 1983 off and on, and nothing compares. It's worth it. I got off track, for sure, but if I feel half as good as I did this time last year, I will never come back "here" again....no candy, cake or treat is worth it. My first Whole 30 cured a chronic shoulder pain that I'd had for over 3 years (I never looked for that to happen and was shocked when it did), cleared up my complexion, cured diverticulitis, decreased hot flashes, improved sleep, cured chronic throat clearing, and I lost 13.5#. I eventually lost 30# and a bunch of inches over about 4 months, and never counted a single gram of fat, or points! And I only worked out a little (2-3x a week and not hard.) I just finished Food Freedom Forever. I highly recommend reading it when you're through or while you're still on your W30. I know from experience that soy, dairy, beans, rice and corn do not adversely affect me. Nor do I crave them. Bread/wheat makes me full and bloated and causes me to need to clear my throat a lot after I eat it. Sugar....makes me a miserable slave! I actually think I could get by with a reset (sugar/gluten only) and probably have very desirable results. But I decided to go all or nothing again, at least for a while. Regarding your comments about finding compliant foods, you will, and then you will keep them handy and know where to get them. Some things I love and they now have at my local grocery store are coconut aminos (think stir-fry,) ghee (baked potatoes and everything you would put butter on,) home made mayo is the best (use the immersion blender method...so much easier!) I never found a ketchup recipe that I liked so I did without it. Still do! Mel Joulwen's Fire Cracker Tuna is eaten here every week! Home made chicken salad too...just add garlic, celery, apples or grapes and even macadamia nuts. So good. I eat black olives by the handful. I don't love many veggies. This part is hard for me. I found spaghetti squash was a great alternative to pasta for spaghetti! Finding compliant sauce is hard but Rao's makes one and so does Paul Newman (but only 1.) I gave up coffee for 60 days but now drink it black or with Nutpods. I buy things from Amazon and from Thrivemarket.com. Paleo wraps are good when you get tired of romaine lettuce wraps. Applegate makes compliant hotdogs. Maverick and Pederson's makes bacon but can be difficult to find. Def read the ingredients, not the nutrition info. Many things say 0 sugars but then have cane sugar or dextrose in the ingredients. Encouraging others strengthens my resolve. I have to remember I'm human...we all are. I don't drink, smoke or gamble, so food is my go-to for stress relief and comfort. Like I said, I do hope you have great success with this and feel better than ever. Thanks again for chiming in on my post. And I'm happy to help if I can. Blessings! Barb:-)
