DAY 10- HELP!!

Recommended Posts

Ok I'm coming to the forums looking for some support. I am on day 10, first time of Whole30. I have been feeling pretty great the last few days, and haven't really had many bad symptoms this whole time. I just read over the timeline in the book last night, and it seems like I kind of sped through some of the first stages... I haven't had any major cravings or "hangover" feelings, but I wasn't eating or drinking much sugar before I started, so that probably helped. I had the "off limits food" dreams around day 2-4, and felt guilty when I woke up until I realized what I felt guilty about, and then laughed at myself! I felt a lot of the amazing energy/feeling great the last few days (so days 5-9ish), and I even have already thought about how much I want to keep many of these habits going after the Whole30, which I would have NEVER said 10 days ago. I have also been sleeping better the last few days, but I have had a few days thrown in here and there where I just HAD to take a nap, which I don't usually do, so I've been back and forth between sleepy and more energetic.

Anywho, on to my most pressing issue of the day... I have mild RA... symptoms come and go normally and I hadn't felt any the past 9 days, but today when I woke up, I felt EXHAUSTED, stiff, sore in my joints. I feel puffy allover. The book says this usually happens to some people around day 21, and then subsides after a week or so at most. I'm not thinking of quitting or anything because this is the feeling I got before when I had a lot of gluten the day before (I already know gluten irritates my RA), so I know that this will pass, but I'm confused about why my body is all out of order with these phases!!!

So, I just want to know if anyone else experienced similar things - my phases seem to be kind of going out of order! Any suggestions for how to make it through this slump? To add insult to injury, it's teacher appreciation week, so we are getting ALL kinds of goodies, and there are some donuts in our lounge today that I can practically smell from outside the building. I definitely won't eat one, but it just makes this day THAT much harder!!! Back to munching on my hard boiled eggs..... :(

Thanks for your help fellow Whole30ers! :)

Hey @HannahBanana86 - have you been eating a lot of white potatoes? Peppers? Tomatoes...? All can exasperate RA symptoms....

It might be helpful for you to list out your meals for say the past 3-4 days so we can take a better look at what might be going on - please be specific about veg types, portion sizes, fat sources etc.

I haven't had a lot of any of those... Past few days:

Breakfast is always either a 2 egg scramble with veggies (and sweet potato or white potato, rotate them around, so only eat white potato every 3-4 days at most in breakfast), or 2 hardboiled eggs with a banana or some berries. Lunch the past few days included: crockpot chicken tikka masala with cauliflower rice (Tues and Weds lunch), salad with 3 oz (ish) grilled chicken, one hardboiled egg, two small beets, walnuts, half avocado, whole30 ranch (monday lunch). Dinners this week: Baked cod with cauliflower rice (with about half a tablespoon of ghee in 3 servings of "rice" for flavor) with fresh green beans (Weds), carnitas/guac/salsa/raw carrots (Tues), 2 egg scramble with veggies (like my breakfast meal, but added some whole30 compliant sliced turkey when I had it for dinner Monday). I often eat 1/4-1/2 of an avocado on my eggs as well, and I had a half last night with my dinner (we have a bunch that are perfectly ripe and don't want to waste them!!). I also have snacks some days because I have super long days, exercise almost every day, and I work with small children so I expend a LOT of energy at work and need something to get me by when I don't have time for an extra meal. Snacks include: one Larabar this week (whole30 compliant), hardboiled eggs, apple with almond butter, berries and walnuts, sliced turkey with veggies (green beans, carrots, etc - changes depending on the day). Drinks include water, La Croix, black coffee, whole30 compliant Kombucha every few days when I am missing my wine rituals! Sorry I am horrible at explaining my meals, I ramble :) Does that give you enough info? THANK YOU for your help!!!

eggs

Yeah, then you *might* wanna experiment with NOT having eggs for a few days & see how you go.... And nuts - I'd cut nuts (& their derivatives so larabars & nut butter) out too. Eggs can be highly allergenic and you might just have taken yourself over your tolerance threshold, and nuts can be inflammatory so I'd avoid them until you're feeling a little better.

For the long days add in a mini meal made up of at least two of the three food groups rather than snacking on nuts/bars - I think your energy levels should improve that way at least.

Are you eating pre and/or postWO meals to help with recovery too?

Ok Thank you! I will try that. I usually have a small preWO meal, but I can't have too much or else it causes tummy issues while I'm working out (especially if I'm running, which I do quite a bit). The most tolerable foods for me preWO are like a banana with almond butter, or a hardboiled egg. I don't do much working out longer than 45 minutes or so, so I'm not running 10 miles or anything, haha. Then I usually am due for a regularly scheduled meal postWO, so that kind of fits in there. Do you have any suggestions for preWO meals that are easier to digest that don't include nuts or eggs?! I can't think of any! (But that could be because my brain is foggy right now due to my weird hangover feeling!!!)

Banana pre WO is providing your body with an immediate source of fuel and preventing your body from tapping into it's fat stores. I'm not great with food pre exercise either so I've been able to tweak my meals so that I don't require a preWO, and am used to training fasted early in the morning. You may find you can ditch the preWO too (adjust the volume of protein & fat in your earlier meal for longer satiety) and just opt for some lean protein postWO - combining postWO and your next meal is counter productive as the fat in a template meal will slow down absorption of the nutrients preventing muscle protein synthesis.

Also, have you ever heard of others not having the hangover feelings until day 10? I feel like I'm doing something wrong!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd say it's not so much a hangover at this stage, but rather your body's very clever way of telling you something ain't quite right... ;)
