alexg1993
I'm on day 5. Haven't really had symptoms other than being a little moody (which is concerning me but not the point of this question). One big thing I've noticed is that I'm not hungry very often (which is the opposite of before)... usually I eat breakfast at around 6:30, lunch at around 12, and dinner around 5:30. I eat my breakfast and then find by lunch I'm not hungry yet and have been pushing it off and eating way later... (trying to listen to my body a bit instead of feeding it when it's not hungry.) Is this normal?
Lea Mint
The mods will probably ask you to post what you're eating to help you out
alexg1993
Typically veggie & protein (compliant bacon or sausage), sometimes add some fruit or avocado for breakfast. Veggies & protein (usually leftovers, fish, chicken or beef) for lunch. The same thing for dinner, actually.

It's hard to say based on how you're telling us what you're eating...Listing veggies and protein (no fat except breakfast??) doesn't help because all that anyone eats on this program is veggies and protein... specific veggies, protein, fats, fruits, serving sizes, fluid intake etc... Depending on if you come from a place of hormonal imbalance, restriction, binging etc... you may not be able to trust your own hunger/full signals so you may need to just eat meals 4-5 hours apart regardless of hunger while this way of eating becomes more normalized. alexg1993
I have followed the guidelines for protein size and veggies are about half my plate (huge veggie fan). I always cook in oils or ghee so I'm definitely getting some fat with every meal. One or two cups of coffee in the am. I drink a lot of water. I basically drink water all throughout the day, always have. Only water (during this month, not a huge fan of drinking flavors unless its wine which is off limits haha) I don't care for sweets so it's hard for me to eat fruit at every meal, once a day is all I can handle. I'll try just eating every 4-5 hours as suggested and see. Thank you!
Administrators ladyshanny Posted May 5, 2017 Administrators Share Posted May 5, 2017 You definitely do not have to eat fruit. It's completely optional on the program and lots of people choose not to eat it (myself included). It has a serving recommendation of not more than 1-2 pieces per day with meals but it's not mandatory. Without specifics, @alexg1993 - it's really hard for us to give you more directed feedback. Maybe you're eating really fatty protein sources or maybe you're eating a lot of raw or cruciferous veg which cause bloating and that can sometimes reduce appetite. Maybe you're eating tonnes of white and sweet potatoes at breakfast and that's filling you up. Maybe you're one of the rare folk that are actually over-eating on this plan so you aren't hungry for lunch. But, given that those specifics aren't forthcoming, let's leave it at "try eating every 4-5 hours".
whynotmyemail
I am having issues with appetite too. Now, only on day 5 of my SO's and my first W30, so maybe this is normal, but I am not only not hungry - I am downright repulsed by the idea of eating a lot of things that I otherwise like. I just was about to dig into my tuna salad and put it over the bowl-o-greens and lemon/evoo I have, but the idea of the tuna actually made me gag. Same is true of basically any breakfast that isn't really small (I can hack a banana and a nut butter spoonful or a "money salad" if I am lucky - eggs are out of the question first thing in the morning) and lots of dinner. And I am not accustomed to eating that badly - it's not like I am going from a fast food diet to this. But for some reason, I am repulsed by most protein sources right now. Is this strange? Administrators ladyshanny Posted July 13, 2017 Administrators Share Posted July 13, 2017 @whynotmyemail - it's not strange at all. It's actually really common for people to come to Whole30 and only feel like they can stand a sweet breakfast of fruits and nuts. Can you let us know if you ever used to eat breakfast and if so, what was it? And how long after you woke up did you eat it? My guess is that your nausea is a result of undereating because your hormones are out of balance and you can't stomach a proper breakfast. Our advice generally in this case is to make a template meal (protein + veggies + fat) and try to eat it. Going around the plate to get a bit of each, and then packing it up to take with you to eat as soon as you feel able (ie, don't wait for the next meal time). This helps to rebalance your hormones. Unfortunately undereating leads to lack of appetite and nausea which leads to undereating and lack of appetite/nausea. It's a brutal circle. You'll get through, just keep trying. And as hard as it may be, stop using fruit to stand in for eating proper meals, you won't be doing yourself any favours, unfortunately.

whynotmyemail
Thanks, @ladyshanny and @MeadowLily ! Helpful. I think the cause could be what you say, certainly. I did not typically eat breakfast - just coffee with some skim milk in it before W30 started. My father had the same trouble in the morning - both of us have been longtime GERD sufferers, with particular problems with morning nausea at worst, and certainly lack of appetite at best. This has gotten worse as I head closer to 40. I have been eating in small meals when I feel able - I am not a grazer, but I have always done better with like, five small meals instead of three sitdown ones, and this has proven very, very true on W30. So I have listened to my body on that. My main issue on breakfast (and today, at least, lunch) is finding a protein I can stomach. I have managed to down my greens with avocado successfully here, but the tuna salad that was supposed to be my protein is just mocking me from the side of my desk! This could also all be not W30 related at all. I am a lifelong migraneur and they are particularly bad (and accompanied by vertigo) in the middle of the summer - so I may generally just feel bad. But I thought it worth looking into, because the protein aversion seems like something that could continue, and I would like to get over it! MeadowLily
You're under no obligation whatsoever to eat eggs every morning for breakfast. Many think that's a rule. It's not. Tuna? Nuh huh. That might be difficult for a non-breakfast eater right out of the chute. However, what about those egg frittata muffins with vege? I knew someone who suffers with migraines who brought a wide-mouth thermos of homemade soup with proteins/vege/good broth to work with her every day. I used to think that was bizarre but not anymore. She had some for breakfast and some for lunch. She had a very touchy gut and had to drink a couple of cups of coffee as part of her migraine Rx. In the summer, it was iced cold coffee with something. It wasn't compliant coconut milk. How about something soothing in the morning to help you ease into your day. Long 'bout suppertime, maybe you'll be ready for something more substantial. whynotmyemail
Thank you again, @MeadowLily! I will keep fighting the good fight. Weirdly, tuna usually would sound fine to me for breakfast - better than eggs, anyway. I know eggs aren't required for W30, but they're so EASY. That said, I have never eaten eggs that didn't come delivered to my face on a carb of some sort. In fact, despite not being a huge bread eater (at least not the way a lot of the US is), one place bread was absolutely required was for me to get eggs down - I always thought it was a texture thing. So maybe I won't force that. I actually like the idea of the soup for breakfast. And my coffee black or with compliant Ghee in it, while not as satisfying as my usual skim milk coffee, works well enough. Will just keep on keeping on and hope to find something that even this committed non-breakfast-eater can roll with first thing in the morning on a work day. MeadowLily
Ghee is not for me but I'm glad that you like it!
whynotmyemail
@MeadowLily, not going to lie, the coffee this morning with coconut cream = WAY better! (But the ghee made for excellent thickener in the really delicious W30 chicken piccata I made last night, which also meant I finally managed to get some protein in me without gagging!)
