Starting a Whole30 with nausea from Lyme Disease

Recommended Posts

I did a Whole30 a year and a half ago and did great! I continued on with the healthy eating for quite a while and lost 40 lbs easily... And then we moved and I got bit by a deer fly and contracted Lyme Disease. For about 7 months I was couch bound. I had no energy. Moving from my couch to the other end of the house when my kids needed direction would leave me winded for several minutes. And I was eating a lot of bread because I had major nausea that only toast and crackers would keep at bay. :( Within the past few months I've started an herbal regimen that has me up and living again! <3 But the nausea still gets me sometimes. I've started Whole30s a couple of times only for the nausea to hit and I go running for the toast to keep everything down.

I really want to do this again. I want to take back control of my life and my food choices again... But I'm having such a hard time with the nausea. Does anyone have any ideas for whole30 foods that are dry that can help with nausea? Drinkwise people often suggest Ginger tea and that doesn't cut it for me... And I have to load tea up with honey to make it drinkable so it wouldn't work on a whole30... I do use sea bands and that cuts it down a lot but some days I still end up needing the dry bread type foods to settle my stomach. Anything healthier to try? Help?!

TIA! <3

If you don't eat the bread things, do you actually throw up?  The reason I'm asking is because there's a chance that it's nausea that is going to come and go and you just have to ride it out?  I know nothing of Lyme disease so if that's not the case, then okay :)

Second, you could try making bone broth and drinking that... it might help you more in the long run too because the gelatin, collagen and vitamins and minerals can help heal your gut.  As far as having to load tea up with honey, you may just need to experiment with different herbal teas and fruit teas until you find something that you like.  Teas with cinnamon in them are often extremely sweet.

We also know that not eating breeds nausea, so it  might help for you to make sure you're eating the three meals a day to keep your stomach full and get your digestion back on track.

As far as actual dry bread things on Whole30, there are none, sorry.

Peppermint tea is another that sometimes helps with nausea, though you may have the same issued with it as the other tea. If you like kombucha, ginger kombucha might be helpful as well.

For food, try baked potatoes or sweet potatoes, scrambled eggs, grilled chicken, or chicken soup. Something like this soup with ginger in it, maybe: https://stupideasypaleo.com/2014/08/17/healing-chicken-soup-paleo-whole30/  Or if you make your own broth, add ginger to it and see if that helps.

Sugar, I have thrown up enough to just run for something dry... I ~think~ that I only throw up when I haven't had enough food in my stomach when I take my antibiotics but I'm not sure so I figure better to be safe then sorry. :( The nausea is so inconsistent it's hard to test it out... I won't have it for a week and then I will, two days off, three days on, never consistent. I'm also definitely getting three meals in. Under-eating has never been my problem. I'll give bone broth a try again... I wasn't a fan before but I've come much further in my diet so maybe I'll be able to tolerate it more now. And I knew no bread, even if they have compliant ingredients, is allowed... I just need ~dry~! All of my whole30 foods seem to be... moist... Lol. I usually like that but now I need dry... and I haven't had the most luck finding that!

Shannon, I'd forgotten that kombucha is allowed! I will have to try the ginger kombucha and see if that helps! I had wondered about baked potatoes and grilled chicken but hadn't had a nausea day since DH and I had discussed possible solutions to try it out. And soups with ginger in it is a great idea! Thanks!

I just want to have some ideas on hand for if/when the nausea hits again. I don't want to crap out again because I wasn't prepared. :( Thanks for the ideas!
