Pre workout shake

Help. I start whole 30 tomorrow but I usually work out at 5am and I have a scoop of Jay Robb whey protein + tablespoon of ground flaxseed about 10 mins before I go to the gym...what can I substitute for this...keep in mind my family is all sleeping at 5am so no blenders or cooking will work?

You might be better off eating a small whole30 pre workout meal instead of having a shake, that's what I switched to years ago when i did my first Whole30.  You could also try experimenting with a homemade nutmilk that you make in advance.

I used to shred raw zucchini and/or yellow squash with a julienne peeler and top it with a "sauce" I made with homemade non-peanut nut butter and coconut aminos as a quick workout snack.

The recommendation for pre-workout is protein and fat... the sauce and veggies sounds good but not your best bet for pre or post workout :)

Protein & fat - a hard boiled egg can be prepped in advance so won't disturb your family.... much more easily digested if you soft boil the eggs. I'm used to training fasted, but if I DO take a preWO I tend to have only fat so I've been known to soft-hard boil a few eggs & eat just the yolk then use the white for postWO. An other option - and just about the only time I'd recommend this - would be some nut butter straight from the spoon.

This is NOT fuel. This is a small amount of food to let your body/brain know that there is no shortage of fuel available and so it's okay to burn off it stores.

You definitely don't want fruit though as it provides an immediate source of fuel & will prevent fat adaptation.

Have no fear, I usually did something better but that was my in-a-pinch solution and the shredded zucchini was really just an excuse to have the nut butter which was my source of fat/protein. It came to mind in comparison to a shake though.

If you are going to follow the Whole30 pre and post workout recommendations, you can have whatever protein and/or fat you like. Walnuts would fit here. Take it easy on them though, they are known to cause digestive upset in some.

If you can find compliant types of Rx bars (I don't know about the current flavors) then, like Larabars, they are approved for emergency use only. 

Personally, I'd avoid them. First, true emergencies are very rare (if you anticipate needing food, it's easy to just bring it with you. Second, they are sugar bombs. And third, I'd rather eat real food, not a product

I have eaten rxbars in my food freedom and honestly, they're like candy bars... I find them significantly worse than Larabars for their candy like qualities.

They are NOT the type of food that we want you eating on the Whole30...

yes, approved for an emergency, but you have to define emergency like we do: something like 'stuck on the tarmac for hours, already ate my compliant minimeal and if I don't eat this bar, I'll start drinking the complimentary booze they're serving or the blood of my seatmate...' or 'I got trapped in a blizzard on the highway, my underpants are tied to my car antenna for rescuers to find me and it's the only thing to eat aside from the floor mats'.  If you have an emergency like this, you're welcome to eat the bar.  If you define emergency as 'I want something sweet', 'they're good', or 'every day at 2 I get a craving' then they're not approved at all.

Thank u so much for helping me navigate thru this, I really appreciate the responses. I saw a recipe for baked apples with dates n walnuts (which included fresh ground among meal, but I can skip that if it's no compliant)  but I wanted to check if baking apples is allowed as the rules say no "baked" stuff?

As long as you're not adding sweetener or other non-Whole30 ingredients to it, baked apples would be compliant . However, I'd really challenge you to think about why you're wanting this and how you're going to be consuming it. 

There is in one of the books, I think in It Starts With Food, a fancy dinner meal, that includes some type of baked fruit like this as a "dessert." The expectation is that this is like a date night meal, or your birthday fell during your Whole30 and you want something special to take the place of birthday cake. It would probably be once in your 30 days that you'd have it. Many people come into Whole30 used to having something sweet at the end of dinner almost every day, and that is a habit that it is really good to break.
